June 3, 200817 yr Author I have come to the conclusion that this album is fairly good. :o Bit sad Beat Control is not on it though. ;(
June 3, 200817 yr I liked it on first listen. :o Nothing is as catchy/as good as 'Beat Control' (on first listen) but it's a solid album.
June 4, 200817 yr A horrible mess of an album. I LOVE Tilly's first two studio albums (and their debut EP to a certain extent). I've even been to see them live so after listening to 'O' I felt more than disappointed. They seem to have come to some weird stage of going experimental on their sound been then scaring away from going the full distance. It's a jaunty mix of styles, impressive for the first two tracks and then the middle is back to Tilly-by-numbers. Similar melodies and backing music. It's all been done on 'Children' and 'Barrels' but to much greater effect. It all merges into the middle for myself, there are no temp changes between four tracks in a row? Slightly better towards the end when the experimentation returns but nonetheless it's too messy! The presense of tap-dancing in Tilly's music made them stand out. But after two albums and continually faceting it in the same way; into their third album too it's become stale and essentially a rehash of past glories but malfunctioned. Here is how I'd rate the three albums: 'Wild Like Children' ıı 7.7 'Bottom of Barrels ıı 8.1 'O' ıı 4.9 I don't quite understand the presense of swearing which impacts on the record so virulently. It's as if they're attempting to shrug off the childish games of previous albums and turn edgier but it comes across as forced and a bit embarassing to me tbh. :/
June 4, 200817 yr I actually like the album, think it's a much more mature effort than Bottoms of Barrells. Also, caught this early review of it on Wireless Bollinger: http://www.wirelessbollinger.com/content/view/1482/81/
June 18, 200817 yr SCRAPPP everything I said there. It was such an intense album that it scared me or something I think. This album is in fact EXCELLENT. Complex both musically and lyrically. It's a fantastic sensory listen. Considering its only 32 minutes long it achieves a lot. Much more ambitious than either of their past two albums. The weird track ordering is all a part of the aesthetic now I believe. It's supposed to be gloriously messy and standardised tracklistings don't fit that do they? It twists everything in a really brilliant way. My ratings of the three albums now stand at: 'Wild Like Children' ıı 7.7 'Bottom of Barrels ıı 8.1 'O' ıı 7.9 'O' could easily climb further though with time. I'm expecting a critical mauling for it though sadly...
June 19, 200817 yr SCRAPPP everything I said there. It was such an intense album that it scared me or something I think. This album is in fact EXCELLENT. Complex both musically and lyrically. It's a fantastic sensory listen. Considering its only 32 minutes long it achieves a lot. that could be best as i find theres a lot of filler on albums and you will end up wading thru loads of meh - like now...my dad is criticising the filler on the album i've got on now in the background and being v sarcastic about it!!!
