December 3, 200816 yr I'd settle for him going on line somewhere and just saying that he's still as happy and knows where he's going.
December 4, 200816 yr This was an interesting read. Now that Nunn, of course, is a free agent, he doesn’t have to worry about that wider repertoire, but can pursue projects purely on the basis of his own interests. There may have been those of us who were immensely puzzled by the interest he took in Gone with the Wind earlier this year that came and went in a quick fizzle at the New London Theatre (and has now been duly expunged from his programme biography), but he’s now back on track with a show worthy of his talents. But it’s also intriguing to note that Nunn, who was publicly outspoken in his criticism of reality TV casting when How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? was first premiered in 2006, seems to have embraced its participants so fully since. As Andrew Lloyd Webber commented earlier this year, “We just observe with interest that Sir Trevor [Nunn] has just cast Darius from Pop Idol as Rhett Butler in his new production of Gone with the Wind. I find that very intriguing. A little baptism has happened here, I think. Of course, he claims he had never heard of Darius prior to the audition.” http://jessiebuckleyfanblog.blogspot.com/
December 4, 200816 yr Thanks Meg. quote -and has now been duly expunged from his programme biography), but he’s now back on track with a show worthy of his talents. Be interesting to know if woman in white was expunged from his biography also. He can just carry on as normal but I would think it will be harder for D. even though he gave a great -performance. I noticed that a few people are panning the new Carousel in the westend but Nicholas jong one of the so called top critics has gone the opposite, surprise surprise. If many more shows close hopefully the critics will be out of a job.!!
December 4, 200816 yr I agree Preston that it must be harder for D. He must have been so thrilled to get the lead in a new West End musical produced by Trevor Nunn. He worked so hard and then within weeks it was all taken away. It must have felt like plummeting from the dizzy heights to the depths, and that takes some getting over. I should imagine he was knocked sideways for weeks. Sue
December 4, 200816 yr I know I keep repeating myself - but it was so unfair. I hate that so many people who never saw it now think it was a disaster and will never know that it was a brilliant peice of theatre.
December 5, 200816 yr Author grrr- expunged eh! what happened to persuing things because of their creative aspects and all that cods wallop they were spouting before.
December 6, 200816 yr Do you think GWTW might have fared better if they had emphasized the love story, and dumbed down on the American Civil War ?
December 7, 200816 yr I agree that it would havce done better i n America first. The fact that it was about the civil war wouldnt grip the younger people in this country as perhaps the book also wouldnt as it was published some time ago and they may not be familiar with it.Had it come over here with a lot of buzz from the states, maybe but defnitely think it would have done better there first especially when one heard that quite a few americans went to the westend production.
December 7, 200816 yr Americans and Japanese. All seemed to love it - but then most people who saw it loved it. Most of the people decrying it as rubbish were critics or people who had only read the critics reviews and hadn't watched it themselves.
December 7, 200816 yr I agree as well. If it had been a success in America first, I feel that the critics would have been forced to view it differently. Sue
December 7, 200816 yr Isn't that because there is a greater output from America than here? Our home-grown efforts can be just as good, but they are fewer.
December 7, 200816 yr Its been announced that Imgine this which went into the Newlondon vitually after GWTW has suffered the same fate = quote - Last perf Dec 20th. As I said here 2 weeks ago, they were to be given notice for next Saturday the 13th but the producers pushed for the extra, final week! 37 perfs plus 15 previews. Its beaten 'Gone With The Wind' hands down! Regarding Trevor nunn and the reality mention re D its interesting to note that Trevors production of Little night music also includes another reality contestant in the form of Jessie buckley who came second in the search for nancy for Oliver on Tv.
December 7, 200816 yr Looks like the theatre will become known as jinxed. Theatre people can be very superstitious.
December 7, 200816 yr I didn't see 'imagine this' I just didn't want to go back, so I can't say if it were good or not.
December 7, 200816 yr Regarding Trevor nunn and the reality mention re D its interesting to note that Trevors production of Little night music also includes another reality contestant in the form of Jessie buckley who came second in the search for nancy for Oliver on Tv. I rather think Trevor Nunn's objection was to the publicity the reality shows generated more than to reality participants being cast in shows. Not that he would have admitted such. Of course it would have been fine if the publicity had been for his show!
