September 4, 200816 yr Maybe the whiskey was part and parcel of Darius getting into character, just like the cigar smoking. I think the Meisner technique which Darius studied in LA, is very much about really researching your character and getting under the skin of it so that you can react in character as that person would, to absolutely anything said or done (on stage) by any of the other characters, almost automatically. It says a lot when Darius even experimented with chewing tobacco in the old Southern way. Now that is a filthy habit!
September 4, 200816 yr Poor Jill, having to kiss him! No wonder she asked him to smoke cigars instead.
September 4, 200816 yr Even then she might have had a better deal then poor Vivien Leigh - Clark Gable apparently suffered from severe halitosis - something to do with his dentures supposedly. BTW it took me 3 tries to post this. Edited September 4, 200816 yr by Baytree
September 5, 200816 yr If you remember I quoted recently someone on broadwayworld.com wanting a GWTW songlist. The thread on this on that site has got nasty again with the same person who posted that photo saying quote - stop this coming to town six weeks in hammersmith is enough. What has this person got against D, thats what it seems. I would dearly love to reply but it means joining that site and wont give them the satisfaction of doing that as its awful. It seems he in particular is worried it may be revived.
September 5, 200816 yr Not worth the effort. If GWTW goes to Broadway for say a limited run to mark the 70th anniversary of the Hollywood blockbuster, do you really think they will cast non-Americans in any of the lead roles? I'd be amazed if they did. Darius was almost universally acclaimed as outstanding as Rhett, but the apparent protectionism of the US on practically all jobs is a huge hurdle to leap.
September 5, 200816 yr And there is such a vast number of American actors, the competition is immense. Edited September 5, 200816 yr by Bramley

I may have read Wickedboy's post wrong, but I don't think he was referring to GWTW Preston, but 'Spring Awakening' which is due to open early 2009, I think!! There is a group of young men posters on Broadwayworld who seem to think their ideas of what constitutes a 'good' musical and what doesn't is foolproof but most of them agree that Darius certainly has talent even if they don't personally like him! What I really get annoyed at is posters who 'jump on the bandwagon' to have a dig at D when they have not even seen him perform!! There is a really good reply to one of the 'young' lads that I have just been looking for but cannot now find which says' 'Have you actually seen Darius perform as Rhett Butler? He is really very good, with the potential for greatness!!' (or words very similar!! ) I always read the posts on Broadwayworld simply for the information Wickedboy seems to have - He seems to have 'contacts'/works in production, or something similar. He was the one who posted when GWTW was given notice that the show would be touring the UK next June and he listed 6 cities - I don't think he would have been so specific if he hadn't heard something!! I have since looked for that post too and have been unable to find it - I don't know if it may have been removed because he has posted that sometimes he gets into trouble if he lets 'something slip' too soon!! It also worries me when a certain number of people tend to monopolise a Forum and 'make fun' of any poster who disagrees with their views! The poster who wanted the GWTW songlist obviously was interested and although the list was printed they also received the opinions of the regular GWTW haters!! You would think that with all their 'musical knowledge' and intelligence they would find something positive to say about at least one or two of the songs!!! With regard to GWTW going to Broadway to celebrate the 70th Anniversary - wouldn't Trevor Nunn still be in charge of casting? I feel Jill and Darius (particularly D as he seems to get most of the negative backlash) were severely let down with respect to how production was handled!! The show should have toured first and then gone into the West End with positive 'word of mouth' from all around the UK. The show was staged at least two weeks too early - if they had held back I feel the outcome would have been so different!! Trevor Nunn surely would offer Jill and Darius the leads on Broadway after placing so much faith in them over here - I'm sure America would flock to see GWTW and probably not even having heard of D (maybe Jill) curiosity would get the better of them and he (they) would soon be a crowd puller BTW every American (and there were a lot!) I/we spoke to even at the first few previews of GWTW loved it - 'This is what a real musical should be like' is one phrase I remember :D Let's hope this wonderful show gets a reprieve and Darius and Jill get to perform together again very soon! Julie (Sorry for going on!! :D )
September 5, 200816 yr It doesn't matter who a producer/director wants if they're not American and they can't be fitted into that exchange of artists thingy process that Jina and Natasha were on.
September 6, 200816 yr Thanks julia for your post, interesting and I agree with your comments re that poster on that forum. He does seem to have inside information but there is such a click there of knowalls who jump on the bandwagon too particularly when GWTW is mentioned as if they have an axe to grind. I do agree that GWTW should have gone on tour first and I do wonder what the outcome had been if a different producer had been in charge but then a different producer for example cameron mackintosh etc may not have picked D for the role but one of the male leads within their favoured group. However in my eyes D was perfect for that role. However Trevor nunn seems to have come away virtually unscathed. I wonder if he will be given the chance to produce another musical.
September 6, 200816 yr Thankyou Julia and Preston for your interesting views. My views differ and I expect to be slaughtered. Firstly the comments made about GWTW. I feel that the original posts by Wickedboy and Scripps(?) gave an honest and detailed reaction to the show, listing its faults in their opinion.....bearing in mind that they attended very early performances of the show before Nunn tried to shorten and tighten it. It seems that these two are the alpha males of the group, bolstered by a set of young-minded guys who then each try to outdo the others in cheap criticisms and lewd remarks, encouraged by W and S. I don't think that they mean any harm.....to them it is just a place for competitive 'fun'. I think that forum is a closed shop, and they would not welcome any new poster, particularly one who spoils their fun with very serious and well substantiated facts. The great pity is that the forum is available to be read by all and sundry, and some people might take their jesting seriously. Just ask yourselves one question. If the forum were not about a man we love and respect, but about some other guy such as we have disparaged on this site, would the forum not be somewhat puerile but mildly amusing ? I know I was quite amused in reading the Bonekickers thread. I'll have to leave the rest of my views re a possible Broadway production till later. Edited September 8, 200816 yr by Bramley
September 6, 200816 yr With reference to a possible future GWTW show on Broadway. If it is true that Margaret Martin holds the sole performance rights to GWTW (as she claimed), in view of the dissing she received for her work I think it is highly unlikely that the show will ever resurface. As to Nunn's editing of the over-long show, I do wonder whether Martin had a clause in her contract forbidding any alterations without her express permission. I doubt Nunn would be given the chance to direct GWTW again, as he made so many mistakes in his handling of the show, which now is remembered with so many bad connotations, despite the excellent performances by Darius and Jill, and one or two others. September 6, 200816 yr Baytree Daniels site is Daniel Bedingfield.com. It appear he is doing a concert in london later this year.Thank you for your views Bramley. You wont get slaughtered but I dont agree with them. I dont find their views on that site a bit amusing and there have been more than one thread with lewd comments directed at D not at any other actors which makes me the opinion an axe to grind. They think they are so clever, apparently the last thread o n GWTW where they jumped in with their cleverness had 30 pages deleted. There are lots of other shows who close early yet have not warranted the stars of those getting such comments. Anyway its is read by all which is a pity, even the person who asked for the song list I think was taken aback still I think a lot of people dont join that site because of that group, me being one.
September 6, 200816 yr Everyone is entitled to express their opinion. I remember reading it at the time but not since and I've forgotten about it....I not going to back track. I do hate people jumping on the bandwaggon. I can understand why Darius doesn't read forums.
September 6, 200816 yr Morning everyone :hi: Bramley, I don't think your views really differ from mine in many respects and Preston I totally agree about the group of 'lads' who, maybe after one or two serious reviews of GWTW back at preview stage totally delight in condemning the show (and occasionally Darius) at every opportunity they get. I agree Bramley that they are a 'closed shop' and they find it amusing but it is a shame that posters who are not of the same thinking very rarely receive serious answers when they are looking for information about performers/shows. I notice that DVO is now being discussed over there, sometimes not very flatteringly!! Even if I was not such a huge Darius fan I would still get upset by some of the insults posted (even if they were supposedly in jest!), as I do about any celebrity when insults go OTT!!! I'm afraid it is one of the 'side-affects' of internet Forums - I am sometimes shocked by the things people post - if I dislike an artist or do not appreciate something they have done, I keep quiet because I still accept that they have talent whether I personally appreciate that talent or not, I do not insult them!!! 30 pages were deleted were they Preston?! - that explains what happened to the posts I was looking for yesterday!! :D It will be so sad if GWTW does resurface somehow/somewhere without Jill and Darius or maybe even with Jill but without Darius - we will just have to wait and see what transpires......... Julie
September 6, 200816 yr I would rather have guys make sarcastic remarks than beat up old ladies on the streets or stick knives into each other. 'Live and let live' makes a lot of sense to me. I'm sure D isn't the only one to be sent up. There were some droll comments about Adrian Lester in Bonekickers. Although I haven't read any of the other threads, so I can't really judge. I do agree that some of the posts overstep the mark, but shouldn't the moderator curtail these? Edited September 6, 200816 yr by Bramley
September 6, 200816 yr we all must have said things to regret later...Unfortunately some things are well remembered... ...best not to be spoken or posted as they jog memories Edited September 6, 200816 yr by SpamFritter
October 21, 200816 yr Have we had this one before? It's Darius: the new Clark GablePeter Robinson The Observer, Sunday April 20 2008 Article history It's been eight years since Darius Danesh, then 19, was part of the first generation of reality pop stars to strike fear and horror in the hearts of Serious Artistes. Initially ridiculed when he appeared on Popstars, he came third on the first series of Pop Idol, behind Gareth Gates and Will Young. After two subsequent albums and five Top 10 singles, Danesh's luck ran out, but the West End beckoned. Following leading roles in Chicago and Guys & Dolls, he is now about to star as Rhett Butler opposite Jill Paice's Scarlett O'Hara in Trevor Nunn's long-awaited adaptation of Gone With the Wind In his new career he has mixed feelings towards Saturday night theatrical talent shows such as I'll Do Anything, but resists the temptation to view them with the same disdain serious musicians once reserved for Pop Idol 'I read Kevin Spacey's comments about those shows with great interest,' he says, 24 hours before the curtain goes up on Gone With the Wind's first preview. 'We're now in the second phase of the reality TV story. There's a delicate balance we need to explore but the cream does rise to the top, and regardless of what short-term opportunities there are you can only achieve longevity if you put in the hard graft.' For Danesh this has involved numerous trips to LA, immersing himself in acting classes to brush up his skills. A successful mission. 'Auditioning for Trevor Nunn was the hardest thing I've ever experienced,' he says. 'But when I walked through the door he had no idea what I'd done before. So I got the role on merit. Well, it was either that or the massive bribe I gave him...' · Gone With the Wind opens at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane, London WC2 on 14 April http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/apr/2...ndrock.musicals
