November 21, 200816 yr There is a new show at the New london theatre where GWTW played, its called Imagine and its getting also poor reviews. Someone has said is the New London going to be the cursed theatre as the Picadilly was.
November 21, 200816 yr I've heard some reviews are good - written as if they just fdon't want to be responsible for a second period of darkness. It'd make me feel really sad to go to that thatre again.
November 21, 200816 yr I have to say that I was really put off by the location and external appearance of the New London. My heart sank when I saw it for the first time. It was more like a dull officeblock than a theatre. I really didn't like walking down that street after the show.
November 21, 200816 yr But when you got in!!!!! I thought the same as you at first but got so used to it (now, I wonder why that was) I remember the warmth of the cast and the excellance of the show. Such a shame.
November 21, 200816 yr I liked the theatre once we got in but I did feel its position is not good, its a bit off the beaten track from the other theatres and we did have difficulty in finding it and then as Baytree says you feel a bit isolated when you come out rather than in the hub of things.
November 21, 200816 yr I didn't like the new London itself. Inside it felt like a cinema multi-complex. Even the doors into the auditorium looked more like that. However, one foot inside the auditorium and it was completely different - breathtaking at first sight. My jaw dropped open and I just stood there drinking it all in.
November 21, 200816 yr It even looked good without all the seats. Not that I have a pic of that. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/megham/Gone%20With%20The%20Wind/IMG_3672autosmall.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/megham/Gone%20With%20The%20Wind/IMG_3675autosmall.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/megham/Gone%20With%20The%20Wind/IMG_3918autosmall.jpg Edited November 21, 200816 yr by megham
November 21, 200816 yr We stayed in the travel lodge more or less opposite the theatre and it was awful, the worst I've ever stayed in. The theare wasn't what I was expecting at all, but like you say, once inside the auditorium, it was like you had entered another world. Sue
November 21, 200816 yr It's good to know about the Travel Lodge, Sue. What a shame it wasn't better - but at least it was close. How are you doing now? Are you still using a crutch.
November 22, 200816 yr It's fortunate then that I couldn't get booked in there for 6th May. I've stayed in quite a few Travel Lodges and always found them to be clean and comfortable at least.
November 22, 200816 yr It's good to know about the Travel Lodge, Sue. What a shame it wasn't better - but at least it was close. How are you doing now? Are you still using a crutch. Apparently that Travel lodge is the venue for hen and stag parties. Never been disappointed with any of the others we've stayed at. Yes Meg. Thanks for asking. Things are still the same. It's really frustrating( and painful),but at the moment there aren't any new treatments for this condition. I live in hope! Sue
November 22, 200816 yr Re the new show at the new london theatre - this post on dresscircle. By all accounts ticket sales are dire for this. Contrary to the moral highground expressed above, people will always make judgements on new shows and they will only spend their money if it captures their interest. Initially this may just be based on the title, subject matter and poster design. Contributers to this site are by definition fans of musicals, but they only make up a tiny part of the audience needed to keep an expensive musical running. It is no good telling the masses that they should give new shows a chance. Why should they? Especially if they tried the likes of Gone With The Wind recently. Yes we need new shows. I'm totally bored with Joseph/Grease/Blood Bros/Buddy/We Will Rock You/Phantom etc. On the other hand, we need shows that will appeal to enough people to make them financially viable. There follows a lot of posts discussing the show in the same vein as GWTW - in other words beforfe they have seen it but they are more symp-athetic this time becaue so many shows are closing. Lots of posts from supporters perhaps thats what we should have done saying how good GWTW was and how the americans liked it. it would at least got some publicity but that seems to be the story of Ds life, the same thing with From a distance, it needed a wider audience.
November 22, 200816 yr Another bit fr9om anoher site = Whoa! That was bloody hard work. This show will be remembered for trying, maybe trying too hard. I've quietly taken the album in the last few months and secretly looked forward to how it was on stage- I'm now bitterly disappointed. There are some wonderful performances there and they have a very hard time working with some of the most boring material since 'Gone With The Wind'- at times I began to wish we were watching Darius doing his thing. The set is superb but very static, not typical of Eugene Lee. The orchestra sounded rather muffled and almost taped at times, this is what took the whole thing away for me as it sounds so wonderful on the album. The audience seemed to sit there in semi stunned silence and thats pretty much how they reacted to the curtain call. The critics were spot on with this one and I don't see this running very long into 2009. They comped 300 seats tonight!
November 22, 200816 yr I would much rathe watch Darius do his thing. Gone With The Wind was exallent.
November 23, 200816 yr The Sunday Times have slated this as well, giving it 2 stars, but at least they didn't have a knock at GWTW. Sue
November 23, 200816 yr Author mm, nostalgic - I thught the theatre was a bit off the beaten track - dull and lacking personality on th eoutside - but WOW when we walked in to get our seat, fantastic - mind you that was GWTW set - not sure if an ordiary show would have that impact!
November 25, 200816 yr Someone on another site said they'd had the album for months but were disappointed with the show. How could that be? Did the production came from abroad?
November 25, 200816 yr Yes I think we are talking imagine. I think it was showcased at -plymouth a while back but I didnt go.
