I can't believe it's been a whole year since I first heard that I had this treat (GWTW) in store.

 

We thought then we were going to have Darius for such a long time. Sue

It's always hard when Darius is back in LA and we hear nothing.

 

I'm reading other forums and keeping up with entertainment news but it passes swiftly through my brain. I wish I could care a tenth as much for someone else as I do for Darius but there's no use pretending - I'm pretty much indifferent to most celebs who get the lions share of UK media publicity.

 

I got theatre vouchers for Christmas and I've flicked through their programmes several times without taking a decision. There's absolutely nothing I'm that keen to see. I'll need to book something because my friend keeps asking me if I've used them yet.

I had theatre vouchers also or Xmas but theres no use by date so I shall sit on them but we do seem to get various things at our theatre here and of course the amateur society here is so good its better than a lot of the westend and they do do varied shows We have Evita coming on tour which i have never seen so will go to that but like Baytree nothing in the westend attracts me, having just seen Oliver done by the amateurs and first rate. Again it has been done to death but the songs are strong throughout. The theatre here has done well with musicals etc and it is having at the moment a £50,000 lift.
I quite fancy the fairground one that David Essex has done and is in but it's touring
However.....I will add.....I'd be in London or anywhere else in a flash to see Gone with the Wind again

Olivier awards: forget best actress, what about best costume blooper?

The nominations are in for this year's Olivier awards, but surely we can find more interesting prizes to bestow

Ah, it's Oliviers time, when all the best London shows and players are rightfully recognised for their fine work.

But let's face it – it's all a bit dull isn't it?

Best actor, best actress, best play, best revival: blah blah blah.

 

West End theatre is about so much more than that, so here are my suggestions for some new awards.

 

Best set malfunction

Gone with the Wind was particularly prone to its revolving stage mechanism breaking down, and deserves a nomination for sheer consistency of malfunctions.

If you listened closely, you could even hear the stagehands cursing as they tried to fix it.

 

 

Best seats

Comfortable perches in the West End are at a premium, particularly if you're taller than the average 19th-century theatregoer.

Imagine This was my second visit to the New London Theatre in 2008, although that wasn't the show to cause me great physical discomfort.

My first time at the New London was for the pre-opening, four-hour-long, Gone With The Wind; it induced pins and needles shortly after the interval.

Kudos then to the Old Vic for their revamped in-the-round arena – I saw all three of the Norman Conquests on the same day, and didn't once suffer from crushed legs or muscle spasms.

Money well-spent.

Id be there like a shot also to see Gone with the wind. I totally agree about the malfuctions. Have never seen it mentioned during posts on other sites but have seen another show that was but cant remember which one.

Well, I'm not renowned for observation, but I didn't see anything go wrong with set, costumes or staging, including the revolve, which at one point hardly stopped turning long enough, to let Ashley pass through on his very quick visit home at Christmas.

 

I admit that I did giggle when Pork said, and I'm paraphrasing here, - "Seems like you only just got here, Mr Ashley"

These people must be in a competition for how many times they can have a go at GWTW. If it's not one thing it's another. :angry:

The review I read for the David Essex show wasn't very good, which probably means everybody enjoyed it and it's well worth going to see!! :) Sue

probably this report is based on the one time they saw it, or heard from a fellow journo who did, I did read that it did go wrong when they were there, but the three times we saw the show it didnt, probably preview and ironing out stuff early on made out to be the norm!
I hate to think how many times I saw it but, I'd go again. The stage didn't actually revolve, just the part of the set that changed the house.

It didn't but I did hear that it did on one preview - but it's that kind of thing that previews are for.

that is what I read too, during an early preview - such things occur in many shows that have moving bits and peices!! I am sure I read that other shows had more set problems than GWTW -
I saw early previews of 2 shows that had far worse things go wrong. It's all part of the excitement of the previews - to see things go wrong an d then see the finished product.
Excactly Meg :thumbup: ......Without mistakes ,there would never be perfection!!

I'd be curious to see GWTW the musical on an ordinary stage, without the distraction of actors coming and going. I'm sure that when I saw Phantom in Edinburgh, there was a two level stage set for parts of it.

 

I think GWTW would also have stood up as a play without the music, the acting performances were certainly strong enough.
