June 15, 200817 yr Author I can remember that one of the slaves, the one who argued about what they should do when they were free and who was obviously an outdoor hand on Tara had an incredible six pack. I'll check the cast list and try to work out who he is. prophet comes to mind but I don't really think he was Prophet.
June 15, 200817 yr it was someone else yesterday matinee, obviously he couldnt match the pecks so wore a short though,, I swear the other big slave who fought off Scarletts attackers was speaking in a Jamacian accent in some scenes..was that another prank or my mind playing tricks
June 15, 200817 yr No, PIP, he did have a Jamaican accent I was looking through the GWTW book today and most of the words seem to be lifted directly from the book. I'm almost tempted to do a copy and paste job from the eversion, I've got but I don't have the time. Edited June 15, 200817 yr by Nina
June 15, 200817 yr I didnt recall the accent from other shows - they all seemed to talk like in the book - chillin and their chillins chillins..LOL

And that's why some of the critics were so determined that Darius and Jill were trying to impersonate Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh because they recognised some of the dialogue as the film's dialogue, not realising it had also been taken directly from the original book.
June 16, 200817 yr thats what annoyed me, they seemed to have forgotten that the actors in GWTW were playing characters out of the book - hence why they were much the same! the most stupid comment from on review was that Rhett should have been played differently from the film, perhaps blonde..oh well.

He was called Prophet but not the same character as the book from what I remember reading.
June 16, 200817 yr He was given an increased input in the musical I think she was trying to get the slaves feeling over.... Unfortunately most people just wanted the Rhett and Scarlett bits Edited June 16, 200817 yr by SpamFritter
June 18, 200817 yr I have to say, the leaflets etc billed gwtw the musical as based on the greatest love story ever told, the film was so successful due to the relationship between two such strong characters, I loved the show, but would have dearly liked the relationship aspects to be given more time. I recall mention on here about Rhett scenes being cut down..I dont know by how much, but there were other scenes that could have gone, perhaps just narrated about and not been missed unless you had read the book, plus extra bits added which really werent in the book at all, and had nothing to do with the storyline Edited June 18, 200817 yr by prettyinpink
June 18, 200817 yr Author That dream sequence at the end went on much too long with Charles etc. following her around. I'm sure half the audience hadn't a clue what was going on. Alos, personally I didn't think there was a need for the scene after "Frankly, my dear,..........." and Melanie's spirit returning to smile benignly as Scarlett is transformed into a loving mother to the children she'd always ignored. I haven't ever read Scarlett, maybe the idea comes from there. If I had to turn GWTW into a touring production I'd cut out a lot of the emphasis on the slaves and go for better interaction and character building with a few instead - Mammy, Prissy, Pork, Big Sam and Uncle Peter. In the book, Mammy and Uncle peter are really strong characters and Mammy's clashes with Scarlett and Rhett are wonderful. I really can't recall much of what the others did, apart from the glorious singing. I'd give Melanie more dialogue too.
June 18, 200817 yr Prissy is a waste of space in the book. The girl who played her in the musical is a fine actress with a great voice but, I'd still cut that and 'All the best people' out.
June 18, 200817 yr yes I agree about those bits going, I am sure there are ways to trim this a bit more, I do feel it was probably hard to balance cutting bits and upsetting actors.
June 18, 200817 yr I'd have the rest of the mourning lullaby back and the rest of the slow motion scene.
June 19, 200817 yr The ending comes from the book. What isn't made clear is that the dream scene is a nightmare that has plagued Scarlett throgghout the story. It's import doesn't really come over well in the musical. I too would cut out Prissy's song - in the book she isn't a nice character and would certainly never have been capable of becoming a teacher. I think it a shame they cut the mourning "Once Upon a Time" as it was such an emotional song but needed the time to hit you.
June 19, 200817 yr I agree - if you were going to have one scene running in the darkness, you at least need to know it's a re-occuring dream that affects her sleep. Bit like you that, isn't it Nina?
June 19, 200817 yr A little like me except my dreams don't tend to be recurring. I manage to create new ways to scare myself each time.
