oh i prefer oasis by a mile to cold play

To be honest, if I had to choose, I'd go with Oasis as well.... They've done at least one good album (the debut), Coldplay's albums are just boring, the new one's only 45 minutes, feels a lot longer.....

Of course it is. No, it's not incredibly risky but remember their stature and where they are. Look at how many recent albums by big acts have been so safely played, full of four minute pop songs no different to what was on the bands last album, even Coldplay have done it themselves twice! These days, the general thing for big and huge bands is not to take risks but to make an album which will sell a lot, which is partly why we have the 'new' music culture we have today and barely anyone can get two decent hit albums. Coldplay have done something different, to what they've ever done, to what people expect, and to what everyone else is currently doing! This album should be their legacy, whether it will or not I don't know...

Apart from those two songs, the rest of it pretty much is tracks that last 3/4 minutes though mate.... And, well, let's face it, the longer tracks aint gonna be released as singles now, are they.....? I wouldn't call it in anyway "different" at all tbh.... Editors released a much more musically ambitious album last year... Coldplay have done exactly what I expected them to do - release another dull album...... -_-

You call this "risk-taking"...?? Please.... Risk-taking is doing what Goldfrapp did with "Seventh Tree" mate, or what Ladytron have done with "Velocifero".... TOTALLY exploding expectations.... I pretty much KNOW which band will create the richer musical legacy...... Oh, but of course because they're FEMALE fronted acts, they wont get the credit they're due by the male-dominated RAWK press....... <_<

Last years p***-poor follow-up to a great debut from a band completely in the shadow of Interpol better than 'Viva La Vida'?! Sorry, but that's one (of very few) musical argument of yours I definitely disagree with!

And if you read what I said I said it was taking risks for such a huge act, you can't compare someone like Goldfrapp or Ladytron to Coldplay when they're expected to sell a needle compared to a haystack. Comparing it to other huge, mainstream acts which is what you should do seeing as they are a huge, mainstream act, like the Kaiser Chiefs or James Blunt or Jack Johnson or any other huge international star (bar Rihanna) who's released an album in the last two years they have done something risky and inventive, as everyone else has just released more of the same. Even their biggest critics surely can't deny that this album is atleast far better and musically challenging than their last. And even if that is down to Eno, surely they should deserve credit for getting him in and making them sound better?!

Er, I think you'll find that Goldfrapp ARE a mainstream act.... Certainly around the time of Black Cherry and Supernature, Goldfrapp were very ubiquitous....Then when the likes of Madge and Kylie started ripping them off and dumbing down their sound, they completely went a different path. In much the same way as Radiohead did with Kid A/Amnesiac when p***-poor copycats like COLDPLAY started turning up like pustulating boils.....

I also thought that "An End Has A Start" was a disappointment at first, then I actually LISTENED to it properly recently and really got into it, it's really quite easy (and lazy) to say that Editors are somehow an inferior Interpol, but anyone who knows a damn thing about music (which you do...) knows that BOTH band borrowed HEAVILY from the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, Bauhaus, Teardrop Explodes and Joy Division anyway, so I dunno why you're making such a moot point tbh... -_- I rate Editors (and Interpol for that matter) far higher than Coldplay, both bands are vastly more musically adventurous, and more daring with their sound. Like I say, the ONLY reason to like Viva La Vida is Eno's masterful production.... But even he cant quite polish a turd.... ;)

Sorry mate, I've listened to every single Coldplay album that they've done.... And, frankly, there's only been about one or two songs from any of them that I've found remotely interesting... I bought "Parachutes" more or less purely on the strength of "Yellow", and was utterly disappointed by the rest of it, my ex-flatmate was a fan of theirs as well, so I heard A Rush of Blood to the Head and X and Y.... Again, just flatline with me I'm afraid..... I can understand why it is that people like this sort of thing - it's undemanding, easy listening, but cannot for the life of me understand why they're so highly regarded....

My mate's verdict on the new album by the way...... "Absolute crock of sh!te compared to the first two albums....."  :P And this is from a diehard fan.....

Tell you what then RFC, if Goldfrapp aint big enough for ya... How about Evanescence....? Are the 14 million sales of "Fallen" big enough....?

I think that it can be said that Amy Lee certainly took a pretty big risk with "The Open Door", musically, it's far more sophisticated than its predecessor, definitely more of a Hard Rock album than the more mainstream, poppy, "Fallen", more experimental with regards to sound and production as well.....

I regard Amy Lee to be a far better songwriter and lyricist than Chris Martin, even though I wasn't a fan of the poppier direction of "Fallen" (it was more a production thing though I reckon in hindsight, the songs themselves were good, I'd heard pretty much all of them in demo versions).... She's not afraid to lay herself bare, show her emotions, I get absolutely NOTHING from Martin at all, and frankly songs like "Lithium" and "Going Under" absolutely PISH on anything Coldplay have ever done....

But of course, because Amy's a widdle gurlie she doesn't get taken anything like as seriously as the likes of Martin, which is just totally bogus in my opinion.....

To be honest, if I had to choose, I'd go with Oasis as well....

and with Violet Hill you've got Coldplay doing an approximation of Oasis doing an something that they think should be off Sgt Pepper - esp in the video
