January 24, 200916 yr 'My Apocalypse' is turning into one of my faves from the album, I think. :o It's so catchy, gosh. Although the lyrics imo don't blend with the vocals, as if somethings missing..you'd expect with a title like 'My Apocalypse' it'd be a lot more 'heavier' but I guess the sound of Death Magnetic is just that - which is still amaze. The more you listen to it and the album as a whole the more amazingly amaze it gets :| My Apocalypse is certainly one of the best on the album, if not the best. Along with All Nightmare Long. Shortly followed by: Cyanide and That Was Just Your Life. The album is too good  I think i like it more than Black album. f*** knows why they ever even bothered with Bob Rock.
January 24, 200916 yr My huge fav would have to be 'Cyanide' obvs although the ones you mentioned just fell short along with TDTNC - which I was completely obsessed with before getting the album. As great as the album sounds I much prefer the first few albums although the quality of this is equally great in different aspects. Where the middle of their album release chronology was somewhat mediocre. .

January 25, 200916 yr I think that all in all, Death Magnetic deserves to rank alonside the great trio of Metallica albums - Ride the Lightening, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All, and frankly, I feel that it should replace ...And Justice, which in some ways, was a bit of a disappointing follow up to "Master...." (I was a total Master/Ride The Lightening obsessive as a teenager, and just felt that something was a bit lacking in ..And Justice, although it did eventually grow on me).... Kill Em All is a good record as well though (and it has quite amazingly sold over 3 million albums in retrospect with the newer fans who'd perhaps never heard it, going back to it, purely because it's Metallica... Considering that the album originally cost about $500 bucks to record and with zero marketing and advertising, it must make it one of the most profitable albums in recording history... ), it was clear that there was something to build on, and they did, "black" album has some great individual songs, but it just never really added up to a cohesive album for me... The less said about Load, Reload and St Anger the better...... My faves on DM probably have to be That Was Just Your Life, The Day that Never Comes, My Apocalypse, Cyanide, All Nightmare Long and The End of the Line.... TDTNC is one of those great "Metallica being a bit sensitive, but still powerful" moments, like the brilliant "Fade To Black" on Ride The Lightening, One or Unforgiven, the more I listen to TDTNC the more I like it, like Fade to Black and One, the structure of it is just perfectly balanced, it just builds up this incredible momentum, and musically it's as elaborate as anything Opeth or Tool can do.... I get the feeling that the reason why Katherine might have been expecting something a bit 'heavier' from My Apocalypse is because Arch Enemy did a song of the same title a few years back which was pretty darn major Heaviosity..... I still say it's a great tune though, and I dont really mind Hetfield's vocals
January 25, 200916 yr Something completely different like Amy Lee or Sharon den Adel featuring on My Apocalypse could work perfectly, imo. As much as Metallica is more instrumental than vocal, it could've scored them a hit single even though they're majorly more of an album-based than single-based. But if you look back on albums like 'Enter' aswell as 'The Dance EP's' from Within Temptation, you'd see how well Sharon blends in with more instrumental songs along with male vocals. Those two albums/EPs are absolutely immense and tbh the albums done by metal bands in the 90's were pure metal where in this decade everything's been adjusted to be much more 'listenable' - but I guess this has its positives and negatives. .

TDTNC isnt really one of my favourites on the album but that may be to do with hearing it so much as the single. but it is a brilliant song. I see one of Metallica's highpoints is the way they structure songs, songs such as One, Master of Puppets and That Was Just Your Life have amazing structure. I reckon a female accompiment could work well actually :o but i'm not sure if it could improve it or just be like an extra version of the track.

I dont think that Metallica were in the least bit interested in scoring a hit single though Kath, I think they couldn't care less about MTV or radio play... Death Magnetic is about a return to the things that made Metallica great and making up the lost ground, and not about being a commercial entity or trying to be all "post modern" or "cool"..... I rather think that a duet with someone like Sharon den Adel or Amy Lee would've sent out a completely mixed message, because that's not what DM is about.... And, put it this way, I would say over 4 million album sales in three months and the greatest critical acclaim since the 80s rather suggests they were correct to go the path they did....

Yeah, which is why I mentioned the fact that they're an album-based band but something different would be a bonus to the album, as good as it is. And not that they need more success, but being successful with some singles on the mainstream is a plus . .

April 5, 200916 yr As long as it's not like the rubbish St Anger was and by the sound of things it is going to be another great album, Rick Rubin is producing it so that should help, im also hoping the drums dont sound like Lars is hitting steel rubbish bins, ive been watching their recent live video's and it seems they still have an excellent live show, which is good becuase im seeing them at Reading.

Well, it's not, and they dont..... :P Take it from someone who's been listening to Metallica since 1986..... ;) Surprised that you haven't listened to this yet.... You're a bit behind the 4-5 million people who have already picked up on how great this album is....
