June 22, 200817 yr Oh dear.... Did you really say that Rob..... no... the t**** going off on one again... the biggest fcukin bigheaded snob ive ever known online...or in real life for that matter...
June 22, 200817 yr I'm sorry, but it's c**p to say that Madonna couldn't have real emotion on the basis that she's a hugely-popular, media-savvy lady who knows how to get herself to the widest audience. She may be commercial, you could call her a sell-out, but she can still sing with emotion, and it can be subtle, which is an opinion of mind you're not going to change. The stuff on "Like A Prayer" and "Erotica" is certainly FULL of emotion, as well as being full of guts, sass and a sort of "fukk you" spirit as well.... I dont really hear any of this coming from "Madge" as she is nowadays... She's lost that spark, she used to be a leader, now she just leeches off of others... It aint particularly creative... It's business.... I wont argue that "Ray of Light" and "American Life" had their moments, because they did, it's just that moments dont add up to a cohesive whole.... Those with a real creative talent (such as Goldfrapp, Ladytron, Client, Kate Bush, P J Harvey, Beth Gibbons, Siouxsie...) can deliver the whole package and have a cohesive, consistent artistic vision even when they veer into different genres..... Madge used to be able to do this at one stage in her career.... And, by the way, Madonna was HUGELY popular back then, probably much more of a big deal than she is now..... You cannot imagine just how big Madonna was in the 80s because you weren't there mate...... ;)
June 22, 200817 yr Oh dear.... Did you really say that Rob..... this is actually a 'my album of.... pop history' 1 elvis presley - heartbreak hotel 2 buddy holly - rave on 3 beatles - she loves you 4 who - my generation 5 sweet - ballroom blitz 6 sex pistols - pretty vacant 7 madness - one step beyond 8 visage - fade to grey 9 frankie goes to hollywood - relax 10 kylie minogue - i should be so lucky 11 oasis - dont look back in anger 12 busted - thats what i go to school for its very hard to try to reprisent all the main cultural fashions there has been, and obviously ive concentrated on the main 'mod' trends. but theres no place for disco, dance, motown, soul, and many more. This is what brian asked for: Arrange the songs in a rough chronological order just as you would like the new listener to hear them for the first time. Can either be your favourite records from the 50's to the 90's, or just 12 songs that represent the whole history of rock and roll through the ages. And here is my post that Rob binned from the Retro forum: Brian's list is excellent, MMR's is not...... Kylie when she could not sing for toffee & Busted ffs...... with no room for any music of black origin  Here is mine for an alien visiting the planet: 1. Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel 2. Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode 3. The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever 4. Aretha Franklin - Respect 5. Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven 6. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody 7. Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The UK 8. Donna Summer - I Feel Love 9. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean 10. Madonna - Like A Prayer 11. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit 12. Oasis - Wonderwall If someone could explain what is so offensive with my post and why it deserved binning........
June 22, 200817 yr This is what brian asked for: And here is my post that Rob binned from the Retro forum: If someone could explain what is so offensive with my post and why it deserved binning........ i explained all that in my pm.
June 22, 200817 yr ...i must add to avoid any confusion the tracks i chose, i chose because they reprisent a chart era. many i dont even like, but they are examples of the style of music that was around. nor am i saying that these tracks are 'the greatest', just reprisentitive of a particular era. i chose busted for this centuary as imho they typify the kind of pop music the charts are full of. i could just as easily have chosen steps, or the spice girls, or even westlife!!!
June 26, 200817 yr i think music is music at the end of the day if its hot who cares who made it jack fontana
June 28, 200817 yr i think music is music at the end of the day if its hot who cares who made it jack fontana Sorry, but that really isn't any kind of response to the question being asked mate..... You should care who makes music and why they do it, and what ideas and imagery is being put across, otherwise you're just a sponge soaking everything in and not really making any kind of value judgement about it.....

June 28, 200817 yr i think music is music at the end of the day if its hot who cares who made it jack fontana hell... is music really that clinical to you?... me n scott have been tearing strips off eachother because we are PASSIONATE about this medium and the enjoyment it brings in all its different forms. to me its almost a spiritual experiance, lifting me up, exciting me, chilling me, and evoking sentiments and emotions...
June 30, 200817 yr Author Emiliana Torrini could be on that list too ^_^ http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/67/Emilianatorrini_loveinthetimeofscience.jpg she is good but love in the time of science does have Eg White name on it - so maybe just she's was just a trial run for Duffy and Adele  - and also Roland Orzabal de la Quintana turns up (no doubt sceaming like a tomcat outside) with Alan Griffiths - so its like oh we've really f***ed up the tears for fears brand name with our Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooooooooooolings lets find the new trip-hop bjork to redeam ourselves with.... 1H0kaasdkiU http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e7/Tears_for_Fears_-_Raoul.jpg "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooool"
July 1, 200817 yr hell... is music really that clinical to you?... me n scott have been tearing strips off eachother because we are PASSIONATE about this medium and the enjoyment it brings in all its different forms. to me its almost a spiritual experiance, lifting me up, exciting me, chilling me, and evoking sentiments and emotions... In a nutshell.... We may disagree on some things, but at least we actually care about it at the end of the day.... When you listen to truly great music, it can take you through what Aldus Huxley called "The Doors of Perception" and onto another spiritual and psychological plain.... It cant be a coincidence that most of the great music of the past 40 years has been written by people who were "rrrrrrrrrrrrrreallllll fukkin' high on drugs", to quote Bill Hicks..... You'll never feel this if you look at music purely on a shallow surface level.....
July 1, 200817 yr In a nutshell.... We may disagree on some things, but at least we actually care about it at the end of the day.... absolutely, i think after 4 odd years we know eachother well enough to respect eachothers point of view even if we dont agree with it! . people seem to like reading us tearing strips off eachother...lol. but i think we can do that because it aint personal as such. pity some others on here cant take the flak on the chin when they are so keen to dish it out if something doesnt concur with their opinion, like we can . :)
July 1, 200817 yr http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/67/Emilianatorrini_loveinthetimeofscience.jpg she is good but love in the time of science does have Eg White name on it - so maybe just she's was just a trial run for Duffy and Adele  Emiliana is better than Duffy or Adele... Not just her voice, but also lyrics, her songs as a whole (and her style)
March 26, 201015 yr I think anyone who's heard Joanna Newsom's second and third albums will agree she belongs on this list and of course Kate Bush.
March 28, 201015 yr I think Regina Spektor is quickly on her way to being "up there" with female singer-songwriters like Kate Bush and Tori Amos. I can't think of one huge negative criticism to pin on her. She always delivers for me, in terms of lyrics. Her ambiguity, complexity and quirkiness is what I find brilliant. And vocally, she's great. I think she's kinda underrated in that respect. Anyone who can play piano, drum with a chair and sing all at the same time is cool in my book. Off-topic: She did a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" a few days ago and by Jove, it was so stunning.
March 28, 201015 yr Kate Bush, Bjork, Joanna Newsom, Tori Amos are not only geniuses but are better than most male artists too. Tori has been playing piano for a staggering 45 years and can compose anything as complex as any of the "dead-guys" as she calls them. Over It - b-side to Cornflake Girl being outstanding.
March 28, 201015 yr Lisa Gerrard and Dead Can Dance as a whole - I think they move me the most with the music they make - the instruments they use in combination with their unique vocals (especially Gerrard's vocals); the concepts and ideas they have behind their music as well as the fact that she and the group have been around for years: I may not not have a vast knowledge of music as most of you have on this thread, but I would go as far to say that she is a musical genuis. itwL5y0He-k Edited March 29, 201015 yr by Daniel Gleek
