July 16, 200619 yr More news from SA thanks to Audrey. Where there’s a Will, there’s a way This year’s Unite of the Stars event promises more glitz and glamour than ever before. Cathryn Pearman-Owens speaks to Pop Idol Will Young about his upcoming performances in South Africa. It’s a charity event that has seen big names like Christina Aguilera, Diana Ross and Westlife per-forming in South Africa, and this year the Unite of the Stars gala banquet and music concert is set to become a much a larger event. That’s not just because pop superstar Will Young will be performing along with ’80s supergroup Bananarama, stylish crooner and heart-throb Patrizio and singer and actress Rene Olstead. In addition, the charity event will now see performances across the country – Joburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay and Durban will all share in the celebrity sparkle of Unite of the Stars. And it’s something Young is very excited about. “I’ve been to South Africa about six times but this time it’s different because I’ll be doing a number of shows around the country. I am going to be performing in places I have never been to before, which is great,†the star said in an interview earlier this month. The Unite of the Stars gala banquet started off as a corporate entertainment evening and fundraiser for hunger relief, but has now become a much-anticipated business and entertainment annual event renowned for its part in bringing top-class celebs to the country and bettering the future of less fortunate people. Young says that although he doesn’t know much about the charity, he is “just so happy to be able to perform in South Africa, and to perform for a well-known charity – well, that’s just a double bonusâ€. Young made an international name for himself as the first-ever winner of Pop Idol (which took place in the UK). But, says the megastar, who has surprised cynics who thought his career would fade as soon as the Pop Idol spotlight did, he is much more than just a reality TV show winner. “I think I have lasted because I think I had the belief that I could stick around for more than five minutes. I was always in it for the long term. I could probably be 10 times richer than I am now but I wouldn’t be doing what I want to be doing, the way I want to be doing it.†Young says he has intentionally worked to ensure that his personal identity as an artist shines through all the talent-search hype, saying, “I think I worked hard with that in mind on the last album.†And it’s working. His albums have gone multi-platinum, he has won two Brit Awards in less than four years, had four number one singles, and has been added to the Guinness Book of Records for his first single, which is the fastest-selling chart debut by a male artist. Young was also voted the UK’s favourite artist of all time in a poll conducted by commercial radio, beating the likes of Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney and the Spice Girls, but he is fairly humble about the accolade. “Things like that are always slightly tenuous – I mean, it’s in no way true, but it’s nice to feel that I have that loyal fan base. I don’t sit there and think, ‘Ah well, I’m better than Paul McCartney’ because I am not. It’s just not like that at all,†he says. As if being one of the the most successful solo artists in the world isn’t enough, Young has also begun dabbling in the acting world. He recently impressed with his role in Mrs Henderson Presents and he reckons there is a lot more where that came from. “I have a lot more acting work lined up, which I am really looking forward to. I have a good agent and it all seems to be going well. It’s nice to have another sort of identity.†Although many South Africans saw Young performing during Pop Idol, the artist has grown in leaps and bounds in terms of his identity as a singer and as a performer. And, he says, his South African shows will be all about quality and having fun: “I’m not coming out with the full band ... just with five or six members of the band. We’ve been working together fulltime for years now so there’s quite a unity on stage. It’s just such a laugh performing live – I just love it ... I wish I could do more of it.†The events will once again take place during the annual Altech Grand Prix Week of activities. Tickets available at www.ticketshop.co.za or at Shoprite Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores. Looks like we could have more acting treats to look forward too other than The Vortex. :cheer: Suddenly his 2 year chart break doesn't seem as bad. :D His love for performing shines through. I'm even more reassured that he wil never give up singing. :D Edited July 16, 200619 yr by truly talented
