Posted June 27, 200817 yr Conservative leader David Cameron has hailed an "excellent result" in the Henley by-election, which saw Labour beaten into fifth place. Tory candidate John Howell won with a majority of 10,116 to replace Boris Johnson as the town's MP. There was also a swing from the Lib Dems, who came second, to the Tories. Labour's Richard McKenzie trailed in behind the Greens and the BNP and lost his deposit, as Gordon Brown marked his first year in Downing Street. The turnout was just over 50%, compared with 67.9% in 2005. result John Howell: Conservative 19,796 Stephen Kearney:Lib Dems 9,680 Mark Stevenson: Green 1,321 Timothy Rait: BNP 1,243 Richard McKenzie:Labour 1,066 Chris Adams: UKIP 843 story here : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7476703.stm Surely it can't get much worse for Labour, or can it? 5th behind the Greens and the BNP
June 27, 200817 yr      Labour even more hated than BNP :o :o Brown should give up power and call an immediate general election, he is clinging to office when the public so clearly don't want him and doing even more damage to his party in the process (good that bit lol as longer tories will be in) but Britian has a prime minister that the public don't want and never voted for so he should call a general election
June 27, 200817 yr Britian has a prime minister that the public don't want and never voted for so he should call a general election Well, the Tories had this back in the early 90s... The passing of power went from Thatcher to Major with no mandate from Joe Public.... So, what's the diff...? Doesn't matter that he was voted in later, for the first couple of years of his PMship, Major was an unelected PM..... Mind you, at least the Tories actually did have a leadership contest... The transferrance of power from Blair to Broon was even LESS democratic..... Seems that this being Boris Johnson's old hunting grounds makes it a pretty safe Tory seat.... Still, FIFTH behind Greens and BNP, oh dear......
June 27, 200817 yr WTF?! Would people honestly want the BNP in power than Labour? What have they got to offer?????
June 27, 200817 yr Labour's Richard McKenzie trailed in behind the Greens and the BNP and lost his deposit, as Gordon Brown marked his first year in Downing Street. Just out of curiosity, what do you have to do to have your deposit refunded. John Howell: Conservative 19,796 Stephen Kearney:Lib Dems 9,680 Mark Stevenson: Green 1,321 Timothy Rait: BNP 1,243 Richard McKenzie:Labour 1,066 More hated than the BNPs? That takes some beating.
June 27, 200817 yr Just out of curiosity, what do you have to do to have your deposit refunded. 5% of the vote. Labour were always going to struggle to hold their deposit in this contest but they wouldn't have expected to finish fifth.
June 28, 200817 yr All I'll say is that it says a lot for Henley that a) they can have had an idiot MP like Johnson in the first place and B) that almost 1,250 of the people there would rather see fascism back in power as opposed to democracy and decency. Shame, shame, shame on Henley and its inhabitants.

Shame, shame, shame on Henley and its inhabitants. Yeah, you have a point.... It's always good to see Nu Labor get a bloody nose and everything, but the fact that more people in this constituency are voting for the British Nazi Party than Labour is pretty concerning..... And yeah, voting for a clown like Johnson in the first place was bad enough..... This lot would probably vote for a rotting corpse so long as it was Tory....
June 28, 200817 yr This lot would probably vote for a rotting corpse so long as it was Tory.... I think they already have ;)
June 28, 200817 yr I still don't think this is a reflection of how things would go in a General Election - I think Labour would still be at least second. By elections do give an indication of how popular a party is, but I think General Elections are different. For the record, I will still be voting labour (as I have for the last 3 elections).
June 29, 200817 yr Bring back Old Labour! :arrr: If only it was that simple :( I too voted Labour in the last election and even though I'm not exactly happy with the way they are at the moment right now I'll vote for them again as they're the less of three evils <_< Strange really as I've always been a Lib Dem person but last time I was afraid Michael Howard would get into power (thank god that didn't happen!) and I just don't like Nick Clegg at all :( Plus my local Labour MP has done a semi-decent job.
June 29, 200817 yr It would be a miracle if labour ever won or came close to winning Henley On Thames, it is a very wealthy true blue home counties town
June 29, 200817 yr Strange really as I've always been a Lib Dem person but last time I was afraid Michael Howard would get into power (thank god that didn't happen!) and I just don't like Nick Clegg at all :( Plus my local Labour MP has done a semi-decent job. That's the problem for the Lib Dems - Nick Clegg.. Who the hell IS he...??? He's made absolutely no impression on me... The absolute worst think the Lib Dems did in my view was getting rid of Charles Kennedy... Frankly, I think it's a better idea to vote for a particular candidate instead of a Party... There's absolutely none of the three leaders at the moment who makes me think "oh, I want HIM to be PM....". Brown's an incompetent oaf, Cameron is just another Blair-in-waiting, image and spin over substance, and Clegg is just....erm, well, I dont really KNOW what Clegg is.....
June 29, 200817 yr Just out of curiosity, what do you have to do to have your deposit refunded. More hated than the BNPs? That takes some beating. Not more hated, but less liked. Unless I have too much faith in people to hate the BNP more...
June 30, 200817 yr Unless I have too much faith in people to hate the BNP more... I think Henley is one of those sorts of Constituencies tbh..... "Daily Mail"-reading, middle class, middle-England, parochially-minded..... -_- Some people are actually stupid enough to believe that the BNP is 'just another nationalist party' like Plaid Cymru or SNP... They're not, Plaid Cymru and SNP have NEVER set their agenda purely about race or the sorts of petty, narrow-minded jingoistic concerns the BNP and UKIP do; they've never made the sorts of hate-filled speeches that come out of Nick Griffin's gob... And neither Plaid Cymru nor SNP have never said they would actually "repatriate" anyone (not even the English  ) from Scotland or Wales.... The BNP is an entirely RACIST party, anyone who votes for them is themselves 100% racist, or else even thicker than Boris Johnson.....
