Rockabilly Highway

New US "Rockabilly Highway" named: Signs for Tennessee portion of highway were unveiled in ceremony yesterday in honour of the road that Carl Perkins and Elvis rode to establish and secure their careers. Once lined with honky-tonks, the Tennessee portion of U.S. 45 was named Rockabilly Highway on Friday in honor of the men who brought Rockabilly and Rock & Roll to a nation and eventually the world. The naming of the highway was enacted by the Tennessee legislature.

"We did this to draw attention to our great music heritage," said state Rep. Jimmy Eldridge, R-Jackson.

A crowd gathered at Rockabilly Park on Church Street on Friday as State and local officials welcomed the naming of the street to the sounds of music legends Carl Mann, W.S. Holland and Rayburn Anthony. Hiding from the blistering sun beneath a black umbrella, Judy Joyce said naming the stretch of road should help bring awareness to the music and people of Jackson.

"I think it will help tourism," she said.

The U.S. highway runs through Presley's hometown of Tupelo, Miss., and Perkins' home of Jackson. The entire span of road goes from just north of Mobile, Ala., to Ontonagon, Mich., which is on the shores of Lake Superior.

Only the nearly 55-mile section of road from the Mississippi/Tennessee state line to Interstate 40 was named Rockabilly Highway.

The naming stays true to the original strip of road running through the heart of Jackson. Signs naming the highway were unveiled at each end of the section at 11:30 a.m. on Friday by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Rockabilly began in the early 1950s and is one of the first forms of rock and roll.

Memphis Horns to be Inducted into the Musicans Hall Of Fame:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/ElvisWaynexx.jpg

The Memphis Horns are among the 2008 inductees of the Musicians Hall of Fame, along with STAX's Booker T & the MGs on October 28th. The Memphis Horns played a significant part on Elvis' 1969 soulful Memphis Sessions and they have made their mark on the history of rock & roll with a heavy dose of soul for 42 years. During this time, they performed with 32 members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and lent their signature sound to 14 Grammy-winning songs, 52 Number Ones and 113 Top Tens. Together and apart they’ve played on 83 Gold and Platinum records (well over 40 million albums sold!).

The Memphis Horns are the quintessential Memphis music combination - Andrew Love, tall, black and as mellow as one of his tenor sax solos; Wayne Jackson, (right with Elvis) short, white and as intense as one of his trumpet blasts. Together they were reared in all that Memphis music had to offer.

Wayne Jackson has played with all the greats from Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Neil Diamond to Elvis Presley. Playing with The Memphis Horns, Wayne's sweet trumpet is one of the most recognised soulful sounds in the last 50 years of pop music. He has played on over 300 Number 1 records and still is one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

Wayne Jackson knew Elvis from an early age, and not only played on some of Elvis' greatest songs but was also a visitor to Graceland and has some great insights into music and the man.
