Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan will reunite for comic book remake Red Sonja, reports USA Today.

McGowan's character, created by Robert E. Howard in 1934, is a flame-haired sword and sorcery heroine described by Rodriguez as "whip-smart... sexy and extremely strong".

"I was surprised when Rose brought me a script of Red Sonja that she liked," Rodriguez said. "I found it very entertaining. Sonja was strong, smart, cunning - just about everything she'd have to be to survive."

Rodriguez will act as the film's producer with Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame) directing.

Rodriguez and McGowan, a couple in real life, previously worked together on Grindhouse and plan to make a new version of Barbarella.

Red Sonja was the basis for an unsuccessful 1985 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brigitte Nielsen.

Well, it couldn't possibly be any worse than that god-awful "Red Sonja" film that was done with Brigette Nielsen.....

With Rodriguez doing it, and Rose McGowan taking the lead role (thank FUKK it wasn't Angelina Jolie....) I have no real fears that it's gonna be pretty cool..... "Planet Terror" was great fun, so as long as that kind of spirit pervades in "Red Sonja", it'll be a good, fun film with some excellent action sequences....

Apparently Barberella has been postponed after Universal cut their budget as soon as they heard that Rose McGowan would be the lead. They felt she couldnt "handle" a $100million dollar budget film -_-

To be honest, I wasn't really sure that a "Barbarella" remake would possibly work in 2008 anyway..... "Barbarella", thematically and ideologically, is 100% tied to the "swinging 60s".. Look what happened with remakes of "Alfie" and "The Italian" job, two other films with inexorable links to the 60s - Total disasters which failed as films, and failed to even entertain in the way the originals did......

The recent "St Trinians" film was hardly a resounding success either, a bit of media hype at the beginning gave way to a general audience apathy.... Whereas, the originals will always be remembered for the truly brilliant comic portrayals given by Alistair Sim and George Cole.....

I might have to dig up the original ^_^

Might take a bit of searching though...

i dont know reading this entry from the top 35 femme fatals might give them an idea:

35. Jane Fonda – Barbarella

Though Jane Fonda has lasers, angels, and fabulous costumes to help her destruct the evil Duran Duran, she primarily relies upon her flirtatious forces to bend triumph in her favor as a space age siren.

(yahoo)

now if Rose McGowan could destroy the evil force known as "the useless 1980 new romantic synth-pop band (even tho they do seem to have adopted the singer from an Oasis trib band in this photo)" - think that would be an improvement to everybodies lives and $100million dollars well spent and handled (and if you want to add your own 'Warren Cuccurullo gets his c**k out again' punchline to that last word its up to you )....

on the other hand maybe they should really make it like space-age and do it motion capture like TinTin or like Beowulf - that would really be the icing on the cake

Why on earth would you want to watch a pathetic film. It is better that you wait for the new one to release.

Why on earth would you want to watch a pathetic film.

"Barbarella" seems like a pathetic film now in our "oh-so-Postmodern", blah, blah world of 2008, but you aint looking at it from a 60s "modernist" perspective.... Which is why a remake aint gonna work. It's gonna try so hard to be PoMo and "ironic" that it'll miss the point entirely......

^i do not know if it is pathetic or not as i have not watched it...

And plus, Premonition (a film that got released last year) got terrible reviews and i watched it and liked it.

I think thats the problem with watching most older films now. I remember watching The Exorcist and The Shining and my friend was thinking like "wtf?". i said that you have to remember that these films are like 20/30 years old and that obviously they wont have the same effect as they did back then.

Premonition (a film that got released last year) got terrible reviews and i watched it and liked it.

Please tell me you're referring to the Japanese horror "Premonition" and that that awful pile of sh"te with Sandra Bullock....... :P

^i liked it   The Sandra Bullock one

Few mistakes here and there but i got really into it  Then again im a fan of Sandra Bullock and Julian McMahon so im a bit biased :kink:

Well, I quite like them too, which is why I reckon they deserved better than this film....

That ending in particular just had me screaming inside "YOU STUPID BINT!!!". Surely not what the film-makers intended....

The ending was just

I saw it coming but the thing i liked most was that, for me, i wanted him to come out alive sooo badly and i think that last scene before the incident was really well done. And thats what i like, i like a film that can make me want something to happen so much just to have my hopes burnt down

This film is back on now... they have casted Jessica Alba for the role :w00t:

^ugh, Rose wouldve been so much better for the role. Im guessing Rose's split from Rodger had something to do with her not being cast anymore. Apart from the Universal reason.
This film is back on now... they have casted Jessica Alba for the role :w00t:

Then it WILL suck big time... Rose McGowan is pretty much a suitable surrogate, Jessica Alba just doesn't even come close to comparing to a real Cinema icon like Jane Fonda.... And frankly, she aint even nearly as drop-dead gorgeous as Jane Fonda in her prime either..... McGowan has the charisma, sexiness and looks to just about pull Barbarella off, Jessica Alba just, well, doesn't.....

Hell, I'd've preferred Angelina Jolie to Alba tbh.....
