Will: I've earned my stripes

Six years after winning Pop Idol, Will Young has said he feels he has earned stripes as a performer.

The singer, who has played knock-out gigs at Glastonbury and V Festival this year, said he now feels he deserves to take to the festival stage.

"I think it was like when you start a new job or a new school or anything you've got to earn respect and that's the way I saw it. I just thought I'm gonna keep my head down," he said.

"And maybe that's why I'm doing festivals now because I feel like it's the right time now, and I feel we've probably gauged it right. If I'd gone and done Glastonbury a year after winning Pop Idol there would have been quite a lot of resentment but I think people feel and I feel it myself that I've earned my stripes," he continued.

Talking about the new series of The X Factor, he said: "There's always been mileage for talent shows. What's happened is they've warped as time goes on. It's entertaining TV and if you get a career from it it's fantastic. I think when I did it it was new thing, the public voting. I think people are calmer about the whole thing now."

Telegraph

In a curious tale of two reality TV-turned-pop-soul starlets, Duffy was outclassed by Will Young.

In the third stage tent, he quietly delivered a tight, impressive set that gave cynics something to chew on. Meanwhile his Welsh counterpart, for whom critical acclaim was made possible by failure to win a television talent show, seemed overwhelmed by the scale of her task.

Big  to the Telegraph.

Not afraid to tell the truth about Amy Winehouse's live performances either.

Yes I noticed that TT, Amy gets away with some very shoddy performances and she's totally indifferent to her fans on most occasions, they deserve a hell of a lot better from her, I love her album but I wouldn't part with a penny to go and see her live.

Thanks girls. Good to read that.

As I said in the thread in the Amy Forum on here - I only saw one of her songs but the band had to just keep time rather than play as she was incoherent.

Thanks for bringing it over TT. I hope someone can save it for us. I have saved the link in my favourites but I doubt the interview will be there very long now the festival is over. It looks very much as though Grace is going to be released as a single. He mentioned it as coming up. I do hope so it's a great song.

Thanks to everyone for all the links and all the snippets. I won't be around much for a couple of days as I have scarecrows to finish, and it's proving a bit difficult with the broken rib.

Not a good pic, but this was mine last year.

Thanks to mrs Soul.

Will Young braved the hostility of a festival crowd to perform a dazzling mid-afternoon set on the Virgin Mobile Union stage, showing off new material in a set which noticeably avoided any tracks from 'From Now On', his first album released after winning reality TV star search contest 'Pop Idol' in 2002. He later said he felt he had "earned the right" to perform at festivals after shedding his reality star tag, adding, "I think it was like when you start a new job or a new school, you've got to earn respect and that's the way I saw it. I just thought I'm gonna keep my head down. Maybe that's why I'm doing festivals now because I feel like it's the right time now and I feel we've probably gauged it right."
