July 5, 200817 yr Yan's German chart comments - Issue Date July 4 No big surprises this week in the German charts and as expected most of the football anthems are going up, boosted by the hopes that Germany might win the EURO 2008 cup. Of course the chart’s period of observance is just before the finale, which Germany as we all know lost. So no winning big prizes if someone guesses that the songs will go down next week. However, once again the biggest hit in the country is no football song but Kid Rock with his “All Summer Long”. Scoring a second week at the top, this continues to be the most unexpected number one in the year so far… As regards the football songs, the strongest impact on the Top 100 is made by The White Stripes. “Seven Nation Army” dates from 2003 but has never been in the German charts so far and as it became clear last week the single was sung before every game during the EURO 2008, which explains the gigantic leap from #69 to number 5, and that only on downloads . It’s better late than never… I should also mention Hoehner, whose “Wenn nicht jetzt wann dann”, initially handball anthem, has also joined the league of the football hits and now jumps from #53 to #15. The song was a number one smash last year. Going down to the lower end of the top 20, we find Jason Mraz  , who quite deservingly climbs 10 places to show that the world is not only football. The biggest new entry of the week comes in four places below, where German band Marquess enters with “La Vida Es Limonada”. I don’t wanna make any conclusions but the song is in Spanish, Spain beat Germany for the EURO 2008 cup, so the prospects for this single might be quite gloomy… But let’s not forget that it’s summer after all. Marquess’ biggest hit is “Vayamos Companeros” taking the silver medal in 2007. The other new entry worth mentioning belongs to Enrique Iglesias with the EURO 2008 official hymn “Can You Hear Me?”. Having in mind the success of the other tournament hits, the 36 position of this song may be seen by some as a flop. Enrique’s greatest success in Germany has been with “Hero” and its number three position.
