Wonder... never realised just how CHEESY this song really is. This is the sort of song that completely flops now too, so it did well to come second. I guess 2002 was the year that bloc voting really did affect the winner.

I take it you're talking about Ira Losco's 'Seventh Wonder' for Malta? But yes, bloc voting did effect the winner that year. :(

Along with 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008....okay I'll shut up.

7th Wonder is my favourite ESC song ever and resides at No.35 in my best songs of all time chart

Maria Haukaas Storeng is catching up fast at No.49 now though!

I suppose it did to an extent in 2001, and diaspora voting certainly prevented Belgium from winning in 2003, but I wouldn't say that bloc voting was responsible for Serbia's and Russia's victories tbh. Especially not Serbia's.

Don't get me wrong, Serbia deserved to win 100% but I think Ukraine would have won had neighbourly voting not happened. I can't remember where I saw that but it was worked out by somebody. 2007 is quite a blurry line though.

I don't know about neighbourly voting (which, let's face it, would have affected Ukraine as well), but, if it was just Western Europe voting (plus Turkey, Israel, Cyprus and Greece), Serbia would still have won it last year.

This year, using those same borders, Greece would have won, whilst Russia would have finished 11th.

11th? :o Woahhh. Is that discounting all USSR and Balkan countries?

Yup.

Their only 12 that didn't come from the former Soviet Union came from Israel, and the only 10 that came from a non-Communist country was from Finland.

Hmm... perhaps Russia didn't deserve to win after all. Finland borders Russia anyway doesn't it? And Israel is apparently full of Russians.

Yup - on both points:

-> Finland does have a border with Russia (Finland's longest border, as well).

-> There's tons of Russians in Israel (apparently, over 7000 immigrants in 2006 were Russian).

Greece/Ukraine deserved it this year -_- Dima shouldn't have won with Believe if he didn't win with Never Let You Go :(

As much as I would have loved Ukraine to win, and as much more than Dima she deserved to, looking back at the scoring and seeing how Ukraine gradually climbed up the board much in the same way as Russia did, I have to concede that Greece was probably the more deserving winner, as Ukraine's neighbours would have helped it quite a bit too.

That said, had we seen a 50/50 split between televoting and juries, I am pretty sure we would have seen a Ukrainian win.

And a top ten finish for both Sweden and the UK.

I reckon we'd have had a mid-table finish for the UK - as patriotic as I am with Eurovision, the last two years have soured me ridiculously. We didn't deserve top ten this year, regardless of Andy's performance the song was far too forgettable in contrast with the amount of quality we had - I can't really fault this year's top ten too much in all honesty!

I'd have been elated with a Greek or Ukrainian win either way this year...

A 50/50 jury/televote would be quite good I think, and I wouldn't rule out something like that happening in future years. The EDC this year is going to have 20/80 jury/televote this year, so at least that'll halt neighbourly voting a tad...
