I never liked Dr Who until Tom Baker and after he left - I stopped watching it again. So for me it would be .... Tom Baker - I think it had something to do with the mystery of Baker himself (I think he was actually a monk at one time) he was definitely a bit off-the wall.

Norma

i have a soft spot for the first 4 doctors.. and i do like tennant, tbh i think hes better then eccleston (as the doctor... ),

but im not sure you can make a comparison, the character developed throughout the history of the programme plus how many here actually have watched every dr who since it started? ...

oh

thatd be ME then!

but how familiar are you with hartnell, troughton and pertwee? all very good, id rate hartnell as the most believeable timelord, he has that air of sophistication about him..

the later ones, post tom baker, were clowns and were not really believeable.

My favourite will always be the one I grew up with so it has to be Tom Baker.

But I have to hold my hand up and admit that David Tennant is the best Dr Who ever IMHO, even though I think Christopher Eccleston is a better actor, he did not fit the role of the Doctor as well as DT.

I havent seen any old old Dr Who episodes only a couple of the old films (Cant remember who they are though )

So from the series of the newest ones I have to say i much prefer David Tennant too Christopher Ecclestone but i am by no means saying that Ecclestone was rubbish FAR FROM in fact. I just feel more attached to Tennant ^_^

Having only watched the new series the only thing i can say is theat i think David Tenant is a much better Doctor than Eccleston.

I agree with TIP; Christopher is blatantly better actor then David- but he wasnt' suited the to the role of Doctor Who me thinks.

My best one is DT- But that's the only one I have seen.

Well I've only properly watched the new series, and I think David Tennant is far superior to Christopher Eccleston.

I love Tom Baker in general although I've never seen much of him as the Doctor.

Quite a hard one this.

My faves from the original are William Hartnell - John Pertwee and Colin Baker

I didn't like Tom Baker and hated Sylvester McCoy

I like both Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant

I don't remember Paul McGann

Rumour has it one of the past doctors will return next year :kink: Although the rumour has been there since 2005

For me it has to be David Tennant, as I haven't really seen many old ones, saw a Hartnell one a while ago on BBC Four.

Christopher Eccleston whilst a good actor, just didn't seem to fit the Doctor's shoes as well, although he did sort of have the emotion from the effects of the Time War with his new ears  He was far better in Heroes for me (when he actually got any screentime :lol)

Tom Baker, best Doctor EVER for me, closely followed by Jon Pertwee.. Troughton was also good actually...

I'm a bit curious about some of the comments surrounding Chris Eccleston though, "Better actor than Tenant, but not suited to the Doctor".. So, does that mean that Eccleston was 'too good' an actor to play The Doctor.....? Dont agree with that at all, Eccleston is a better actor than Tenant, and he was a far better Doctor than Tenant... He took the role far more seriously than Tenant (who was frankly an annoying buffoon for most of the second series, but got better in the third and fourth, when he gradually stopped all the Sylvester McCoy-isms...) does is all, dunno why that should be regarded as not being suited for the part.....

I like Patrick Troughton as an actor but haven't seen him as the doctor.

I started watching it when Peter Davison was on and liked him but absolutely hated Colin Baker. Sylvester McCoy seemed fun for about five minutes but ultimately those two put me off.

Missed McGann and have watched precious little of the new ones but I prefer Tennent to Eccleston.

Never seen Hartnell, only know Pertwee from Worzel Gummidge and Tom Baker has killed his reputation by doing too many c**p voice-overs.

I'd agree with that to a point, but his years as The Doctor are just superb.. He's the first Doctor I remember - his long scarf, silly hat, the jelly babies.....

When he morphed into Peter Davison, I was just so utterly gutted tbh..... Never thought much of Pete, an utter lightweight in comparison to Baker or Pertwee... Colin Baker was actually alright, people slag him and he aint the type of actor you exactly warm to, but I did like his rather spiteful turn as the Doc; McCoy was alright as well, he got some interesting stories to work off, and one of the best companions EVER (Ace). I still say "Curse of Fenric" is one of the best Dr Who stories ever...

i agree about peter davidson, who was just off 'all creatures great and small' where he played a soft, wimpish 'triston farnham' (sp?). never a good choice for the doctor

mind you, i bet robert hardy would have made a superb doctor!

i agree with whats been said about eccleston, he didnt fit as dr who... he seemed to be a 'lovey' acting below himself.... and i think he was. tennant is the best doctor since tom baker .... ok voiceover extrodinaire, but dont forget he played captain redbeard rum in blackadder  'you have a womans bottom'...lol..

I'm surprised you said that.

For me Christopher Eccleston put on far more convincing acting performances in Let Him Have It, Cracker, Shallow Grave, Our Friends In The North & for me his career high performance to date in Hillsborough than in Dr Who. Personally I think he is this generations Albert Finney (& could you imagine Albert Finney as Dr Who as one of the first three Doctors? For me the answer is no, because he was too good/serious for the part, like Christoper Eccleston.

In contrast David Tennant has been perfect for the role because he has been far superior in the role of the Doctor then he was in Casanova or Blackpool and his character seems to be getting more darker the more he experiences in this regeneration as the Doctor. (The same could be applied to Tom Baker who I remember playing Rasputin in some film, The Life & Loves of the She-Devil, as Sherlock Holmes in Hounds of the Baskervilles, was in the Narnia Chronicles & appeared in that wretched ITV series Cluedo - but whose out of this world eccentricity made him born to play Dr Who).

Personally I'm not one of those anorak's (I'm not a Sci-Fi fan in the slightest) who thinks Dr Who should be all serious high brow stuff & largely Scientific based. For me Dr Who at its best should be a mainstream programme watched by parents AND their children with a perfect mix of drama, tragedy, serious topics one minute & humour the next.......in short an emotional rollercoaster that makes you think, even if it is all "Wibbley Wobbly Timey Wimey" rubbish. In other words a show that makes the males of the family grab the remote and tell their other halfs "you watch your Corrie & 'Enders, so I'm watching Who"
