Posted July 6, 200817 yr London based rapper Dizzee Rascal and Scottish dance producer Calvin Harris have gone straight to No.1 in the UK singles chart with new collaboration, Dance Wiv Me. Swedish DJ Basshunter scores his second UK hit, going in at No.3 with All I Ever Wanted, also on download only sales, while last week’s No.1 from Ne-Yo, Closer, is another one week chart topper, falling to second place this week. Dizzee has been on the scene in some way or another for the majority of this decade, his big breakthrough coming in 2003, when his album Boy In Da Corner won the 2003 Mercury Music Prize. He has had a string of hit singles, the biggest until now being the 2004 No.10 hit Stand Up Tall. He also controversially featured on the million selling 2004 Band Aid 20 single where he added a widely unpopular rap to the timeless Christmas song. Calvin Harris meanwhile burst onto the charts last year with the top ten singles Acceptable In The 80s and The Girls. Dance Wiv Me is one of a number of singles that Calvin has produced recently, the last notable one being In My Arms for Kylie Minogue. The single has gone straight in at No.1 on download sales alone, becoming the biggest hit for both artists, and looks likely to break the recent string of short number ones. With the physical single released on Monday, the pair are at the very least guaranteed a second week at the top. Last week’s No.1 from Ne-Yo, Closer, slides a place to No.2 this week, overwhelmed by the huge start from Dizzee and Calvin. The song has been inside the UK top ten for six weeks so far and is on course to replace So Sick as the singer’s biggest hit here. It is the third single of the year to spend only a week at No.1, following The Ting Tings and Coldplay. Swedish DJ Basshunter surprised everyone in January be going to No.1 for five weeks with his debut UK single Now You’re Gone, an English reworking of the European hit Boten Anna. Second single, All I Ever Wanted, has another interesting story behind it. French dance act Daddy DJ’s debut self titled single was absolutely huge all over Europe in 2001 but was not released in the UK, despite having been pencilled in on release schedules for much of the year. Basshunter released a reworking of Daddy DJ in some European countries under the name DotA, and has chosen to release an English version of the track as his second single here. The gamble paid off, and Basshunter looks set to become one of those rare dance acts that are able to have a string of hit singles rather than being a one hit wonder. All I Ever Wanted enters at No.3 and is the fourth consecutive top five hit for his record label Hard2Beat, all of their releases having been huge hits in the UK. All I Ever Wanted is out on Monday physically while Basshunter’s album, Now You’re Gone – The Album, is due out a week later. Hard2Beat will hope to follow in the success of All Around The World’s acts Cascada, Scooter, Darren Styles and Ultrabeat, all of whom have achieved top ten albums in the past year. No Air, the duet between Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown has fallen a place to No.4 this week, just ahead of its physical release on Monday. The two American singers looked to be on course for a UK No.1 single having moved 22-10-3 in its first three weeks in the top forty. But with Dizzee/Calvin and Basshunter being thrown into the mix, it looks as if No Air will have to make do with its No.3 peak of last week. Chris Brown’s spends a second week with two simultaneous top five hits as his own current single, Forever, drops just a place to No.5. British rapper and producer Ironik debuted at No.11 last week with the ‘street anthem’ Stay With Me, which samples both Rozalla’s Everybody’s Free and Westlife’s Written In The Stars. After its full release, the single becomes one of the more unexpected top ten hits of the year as it jumps five places to No.6 proving a triumph to Sky Digital channels Fizz and Channel U which supported the track right from the start when Ironik was not signed to a record label. Coldplay’s former No.1 single Viva La Vida slides five places to No.7 this week whilst Rihanna slides three places to No.8 with the former No.1 single Take A Bow. Gabriella Cilmi is down just two spots with Sweet About Me, still benefiting from dramatically increased airplay in recent weeks, whilst the now physically released We Made It by Linkin Park & Busta Rhymes surprisingly fails to climb and is a non-mover at No.10. The top ten this week therefore features three British acts, four American acts, an Australian, a Barbadian and a Swede. The Ting Tings have two singles in the top twenty this week. With former No.1 single That’s Not My Name sliding out of the top ten to No.13 this week, infectious new single Shut Up & Let Me Go looks poised to overtake in the coming weeks, climbing nine places to No.15. With the single scheduled for a physical release on July 21st, it looks as if it could provide the Salford duo with a second top ten hit very soon. Madonna’s second single from Hard Candy, Give It 2 Me, advances seven places to a new peak of No.18 as it aims to become another top ten hit for the queen of pop. The song sits back to back with previous single 4 Minutes, which slides three places to No.17 this week. Estelle’s American Boy climbs back up two places to No.21 this week, a former UK No.1 of course, whilst American electronic-indie duo MGMT surge nine places to No.22 with current single Electric Feel, which benefits from ‘the Glastonbury effect’ and now becomes their first hit to grace the UK top thirty. Brighton based dance act Freemasons benefit from their physical release, jumping eleven places to No.23 with When You Touch Me. It is however their smallest hit to date; their first four singles, Love On My Mind, Watchin’, Rain Down Love and Uninvited all went top twenty in the UK. Fall Out Boy’s Beat It is another resurgent hit, jumping back up a place to No.26. The second Estelle single of this week is No Substitute Love, the second single to be taken from her top ten album Shine. Following its full physical release the song jumps into the top forty for the first time at No.30, although it can be seen as a flop, being nine places behind American Boy, which has now been in the top forty for fifteen weeks. Jay-Z is the second beneficiary of ‘the Glastonbury effect’ in this week’s singles chart. The controversial festival headliner re-enters the top forty this week with 99 Problems, a former No.12 hit in 2004 it’s back in at No.35 this week. With no physical release scheduled, it’s a surprise to see a re-entry from Maroon 5 and Rihanna’s If I Never See Your Face Again. The track left the top forty last week, having peaked at No.28, but returns at No.36 this week. In a fairly stagnant top forty which features only five different songs to last week the only other climber is Chris Brown’s With You. The former No.8 single is back up a place to No.37 this week. No change at the top of the album charts again this week as Coldplay’s Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends easily stays ahead of Duffy’s Rockferry, the No.2 album once again. Coldplay have been at No.1 for four weeks now and are already the year’s second biggest seller. Chris Brown’s Exclusive jumps into the top five for the first time this week, up three places to No.3, and cementing his status as one of the biggest stars of 2008. Neil Diamond continues to impress with comeback album Home Before Dark, down just a place to No.4, ahead of Darren Styles who is also down one with Skydivin’ which incredibly spends a third week in the top five, whilst after a swift fall from glory, the former No.1 album from The Ting Tings, We Started Nothing, is climbing again, back up five places to No.6. Amy Winehouse is back up six places from No.13 to No.7 with Back To Black, the multi million selling former No.1 album while Seth Lakeman has the highest new entry at No.8, with Poor Man’s Heaven. Rihanna’s former No.1 album Good Girl Gone Bad is still yo-yoing and is back up six places to No.9 this week. Meanwhile, Neil Diamond rounds off the top ten, incredibly jumping back up six places to No.10 with his Best Of, and proving that the veteran singer is one of the more unexpected success stories of 2008. Next week’s chart should be fairly static, as the download entries from this week have their physical formats released. Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris should easily stay at No.1 with Dance Wiv Me, whilst Basshunter should move up a place to No.2 ahead of Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown, who are likely to move back to No.3 with No Air. Other significant physical releases are due from Jay Sean, The Kooks, NERD, Paul Carrack, Sharleen Spiteri and The Wombats. Kid Rock is poised for a major hit next week with new single, All Summer Long while The Ting Tings and Madonna should continue to climb with their new singles. In a quiet week for album releases, Coldplay should keep hold of the No.1 album for a fifth week ahead of Duffy and Neil Diamond whilst notable new releases are due from Black Kids, Beck, Stone Gods, Paul Heaton and Leon Jean Marie.
