60's boy turned hippy turned muslim..

he had a string of hits spanning 11 years, which are you favs? if any!

- i love my dog '66 .... an odd and rather disparaging song , nonchalant love song?... i like it!

- matthew and son '67 ... a 60's fav topic, moaning about work! 'its a diabolical liberty' like it!

- im gonna get me a gun '67 ... hints of western in this 'revenge' track.. a third good un :)

- a bad night '67 .... cant remember this

- kitty '67 .... nor this, peaked @ #47!

- lady d'arbanville '70 ... superb lament, imho his best track (single). who was she? based on anyone?

- moon shadow '71 ... oh dear, hippy nonsense resulted in this awful song

- morning has broken '72 ... strange that such a prolific songwriter should cover a hymn! ok though

- cant keep it in '72 ... not bad

- another saturday night '74 ... didnt rate this miserable track

- remember the days of the old school yard '77 ... his last and poorest track?.. was for me anyway.

Cat Stevens = the commercial Nick Drake.

Ironically on his The Very Best Of album that I own it is clear his best tracks are the album tracks that were never released as singles.

For me his best song just ahead of Lady D'arbanville & Peace Train is.....

Cat Stevens - Sad Lisa

- i love my dog '66 - I really liked this one, but it sounds a bit pervy in this day and age!

- matthew and son '67 - another favourite

- i'm gonna get me a gun '67 - not too keen on this

- lady d'arbanville '70 ... wasn't this about Patti D'Arbanville?

- cant keep it in '72 - preferred the instrumental 'B' side, Crab Dance (yes it is an awful title I'll admit)

- another saturday night '74 - I love this one

- remember the days of the old school yard '77 - I like this, great keyboards and Elkie Brookes joining in too

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But my favourites are

Father & Son (shame on Boyzone for doing such a cr/\p cover)

The First Cut Is The Deepest

Here Comes My Baby (although I actually prefer the Tremeloes cover)

Wild World

Norma

- remember the days of the old school yard '77 ... heard better

Quite liked most of his early singles.

I also have the album - Tea For The Tillerman

These are the singles I liked all of which I have:

I Love My Dog

Matthew & Son

I'm Gonna Get Me A Gun

A Bad Night

Kitty

Here Comes My Wife

Lady D'arbanville

Morning Has Broken (features Elton John on Piano)

Father & Son

I also have the following that he wrote but recorded by someone else:

First Cut Is The Deepest - PP Arnold 1967

Here Comes My Baby - Tremeloes 1967

Wild World - Jimmy Cliff 1970

The hit Another Saturday Night was a cover of Sam Cooke's 1963 hit

in truth it was abit lazy of me not to include other hits he penned..

'first cut' is great, so is jimmy cliff's 'wild world', both are very soulful tracks.

And Duffy performed brilliantly First Cut Is The Deepest on Jools Halland's Hootenanny last New Year's Eve.

  • 4 weeks later...

I love Cat Stevens (in the time he was still Cat Stevens, not so keen on his new music).

I love all the songs from Tea for the Tillerman

From Teaser and the Firecat I like:

- If I Laugh

- Morning Has Broken

- Moonshadow

I don't have the rest albums (but a greatest hits instead :teresa: ). I like a lot "Lady D'arbanville" , First Cut is the deepest and some aother also.

I still think that Tea for the tillerman is the best album he has wrote.
