Headteacher Sir Alan Steer has told the Guardian: "We live in a greedy culture, we are rude to each other in the street." This culture among adults is, in part, contributing to the epidemic of knife and gun violence among teenagers, he believes.

Do you agree?

Do you agree?

In a word - YES....

The author might have a point but his view is extremely simplistic

The main problem is not greed the main problem is the fact that kids are above the law now and can do what they want because of sandal wearing liberals stacking the system and laws in favour of the kids thus creating a generation of out of control yobs who know the law is stacked in their favour nothing to do with greed

Ok bad mannered teenagers and children do not make up 100% of those that are rude in the street but schools aren't allowed to discipline kids nor are parents because of the "i'll report you to Childline" culture and that is reflected in the streets

And you say the author has a simplistic view.... I've not seen too many Euro MPs, MPs or even Esther Rantzen wearing sandals.... And Childline was created for a damn good reason and with absolutely good intentions... Your views of things like Childline in these sorts of simplistic terms says a lot more about you than the "sandal wearing liberals" (whoever they are...).. Chav culture and the "me, me, me, I want it now" self-centred, "greed is good", dont-give-a-sh!t-about-society attitude was fostered by your own Saint Maggie, so dont blame the liberals for that one.... She even did a speech about it.. "There's no such thing as society..." remember...? She started the rot.....

Liberalism has done far worse for the breakdown of society than Thatcherism

The breakdown of discipline in the home and school is as a direct result of liberalism

In our day if we stepped out of line in school we got caned, that was abolished so now schools and teachers have no tools to deal with unruly kids, kids have too many rights now, the abolition of the cane was a bloody disaster for the education system, the abolition of the cane was because of liberals finding supposed good in everyone

In our day if we stepped out of line our parents could give us a smack, there was discipline in the home and parents were real authority figures to be respected but because of the liberal brigade parents can no longer discipline their kids in the home

In our day we step out of line a cop could give us a clip round the ear and send us home now police have no power to discipline kids

Liberalism has created a generation of untouchables, can't be disciplined in school, can't be disciplined at home, can't be disciplined in the laws

Of course kids need protection etc but the balance created by the liberal brigade has taken things to extreme and that to me is the reason for the breakdown in society so that has nothing to do with Maggie

You're kidding right..? It has everything to do with the legacy of Thatcherism... You tell me how Holland, Scandinavia and other EU countries can have strong liberal education policies and NOT have the problems we've had... Liberalism AINT the problem, it's poor educational standards (something you certainly cant accuse Scandinavia, Holland or Germany of having)... Liberals would want to see everyone educated to a decent level, whether in academic or vocational subjects, they would want to see strong state educational institutions.. What liberals would NOT want is a two-tier education system with nonsense "league tables" which sees everyone clamouring to get kids into what are perceived to be the "good" schools while the "bad" schools fall by the wayside, become more and more badly funded and have increasingly poor standards, creating low morale amongst teachers and pupils alike... Of course we have Nu Labor to thank for a lot of this, but the rot began in with the Thatcher years, her education policies were frankly horrendous...

The best thing we could do is to bring back apprenticeships and technical colleges where kids who dont have an academic bent can get a good education learning a TRADE....

At the end of the day, you reap what you sow, and Thatcher sowed inequality, selfishness, bigotry and greed... The 80s was punctuated by Yuppie and the Harry Enfield "Loadsamoney" character, a fore-runner to Chav if ever there was..... Getting rid of corporal punishment and parental smacking I agree was a bad move, but the selfish b'stard culture which Thatch beat into us has created more problems.... Chav "culture" is punctuated by an utter selfishness and a total disregard for others with no responsibility to society in general at its core... Chav is in so many ways TOTALLY Thatcheresque.....

oh its 90% thatchers legacy, no doubt, she made greed and selfishness acceptable in (the non existant ) society... thatchers children are now parents to chavs... blame liberalism?... not really, if we hadnt got such a self centred society, if we kept the morals that i grew up with in the 60's, then liberalism, pc brigade, would never have got such a foothold.

liberalism is a consequence of thatcherisms selfishness, and todays society is the result.

..... and they now will give her a state funeral?... sheesh.. <_<

if we kept the morals that i grew up with in the 60's

Well, I dunno about that dude.. The 60s still had rampant racism, homophobia, sexism and the like, I dont think those "values" are in anyway desirable.. Certain things had to change.... I suppose it depends on which branch of "liberalism" you talk about... Liberal should mean a freedom of ideas and thoughts, but of course, you have the Thatcherite NEO-Liberalism in which the market runs rampant and greed and selfishness occurs.... Neo-Liberalism talks an awful lot about "choice", but of course, it's an illusion, there is no "choice" for the vast majority of people out there who dont have the resources.. Thatcherism/Neo-Liberalism was just a con, it certainly did not work for the majority.... 1% of the population controlling 80% of the wealth....? This is not in any way in keeping with genuine 'libertarian' ideas.....

well true, not every value was a possitive one.. i guess things will never be perfectly balanced.

I agree that we live in a selfish society, an 'I Want It Now' world which, I believe, does stem from the Thatcher years.

Your argument there is very simplistic

The "I want it now" world is far more caused by

1) Celebrity culture and the obsession with celebrities

2) Reality tv shows like Big Brother where talentless wanabee's make millions which has shown youngsters that the way to fame and fortune is not hard work and studying hard at school and uni but instead getting on a reality tv show

3) The WAG culture where you can make millions shagging a footballer

Hard work and setting up a business and studying hard at school has been replaced in young people by shagging footballers, getting t*ts out for lads mags and wanting to appear on shows like Big Brother

Celebrity culture started in America

Big Brother started in Australia

Maggie can't be blamed any more than she can be blamed for the Kennedy assassination

These "values" would have been utterly rejected by the UK public though in the 60s and 70s and you damn well KNOW it..... The likes of BB and "Celeb Culture" hasn't exactly infected the people of France, Scandinavia or Germany to anything like the degree it has in this country now has it.... Can't possibly be coincidence that THEY never had to suffer anything like as poisonous and destructive an ideology as Thatcherism/Neo Liberalism in the 80s.......

The cult of celebrity started through Murdoch, an Australian American, what kicked off the whole celeb culture in the UK was The Sun's obsession with Diana which then evolved via Victoria/David Beckham, Jordan and then Paris Hilton so the main cause of the WAG/BB/Celeb culture in this country is Murdoch not Maggie

British culture and British identity is dead, we are nothing more than America's b**ch and every new trend or cult or whatever that takes place in the UK takes its lead from America, Britain is the 51st State of America

Can't compare us with France mate and other countries, France has extreme privacy laws which prevent the very invasions of privacy that tabloid readers in the UK so get their kicks from

But given you mention France the likes of Hello Magazine and Paris Match, 2 of the biggest celeb magazines in the world are French

Well, the bold part I totally agree with.... But again, this stems directly out of the "special relationship" between Maggie and Ronnie. This country became a dumping ground for US nukes and weapons of war during the 80s.... Greenham Common....?

And come ON dude, you CANNOT absolve Maggie of the particular sin of Murdoch... She was totally up the arse of Murdoch from day one.... They were best mates.. You SERIOUSLY have a selective memory Craig.... Maggie and Murdoch totally fed off each other.....

PMSL....

Well, perhaps we need to be a little bit more like the French in this area.... If it stops all the tittle tattle which provides a distraction from the REAL issues.... And you cannot deny that your typical French person is a damn sight more politically and socially aware, and certainly more likely to make a stand for their rights as citizens.... The Govt fears the people of France, not the other way round....

Mind you, the French are CITIZENS of a REPUBLIC, not the SUBJECTS of a MONARCHY.... I guess that's the main difference.... -_-

But given you mention France the likes of Hello Magazine and Paris Match, 2 of the biggest celeb magazines in the world are French

"Paris Match" gives more focus to NEWS stories than celeb ones in the main.. It's a lot classier and better written than the likes of the Scum or OK magazine....

"Hello" mag is owned by a Spanish dude called Eduardo Sanchez Junco (yeah, VERY French... ), and is a spin-off of a Spanish/Mexican mag called "Hola" (which means "Hello" in Spanish...Bit of a clue that... :P ). Try actually doing the most rudimentary of research sometime Craig....
