so as you can see, in reply to the question posed in the 'vanilla revolution' thread... yes imho from this random chart there WAS plenty of good pop music around in 1968, in this chart alone there was several all time greats that still get aired today. (think...fire... etc)

11 Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man ....................... excellant hippy pop!

Ever since David Fincher used this track in his film "Zodiac" (a rather excellent, under-rated film about the notorious Zodiac Killer), I cant help but hear the rather darker sub-texts of this tune... It's a bit like America's "Horse With No Name" in a lot of ways.....

i LOVE this track, its easily donovans best and a real dark, heavy, departure from his usual lightweight, folky type tracks he was famous for. in fact id suggest that it was one of the earliest 'heavy' pop singles.

HURDY GURDY MAN

Donovan

Thrown like a star in my vast sleep

I open my eyes to take a peep

To find that I was by the sea

Gazing with tranquillity.

'Twas then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man

Came singing songs of love,

Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man

Came singing songs of love.

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.

Histories of ages past

Unenlightened shadows cast

Down through all eternity

The crying of humanity.

'Tis then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man

Comes singing songs of love,

Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man

Comes singing songs of love.

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy.

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.

Here comes the roly poly man and he's singing songs of love,

Roly poly, roly poly, roly poly, poly he sang.

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang,

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang

.... tbh i dont get it! i never was one for understanding lyrics much, i just assumed it was about drugs...

It certainly showed the darker side of Hippy/Psychedelic era that's for sure... The tune is used brilliantly in the "Zodiac" film, really adding to the meticulous period detail of late-60s/early 70s US and the fact that the Zodiac Killer was this monstrous, faceless "bogeyman" who's crimes have never been effectively solved. The film offers the most cogent theory, but theory is all it ever will be as the most likely suspect died before charges could ever be brought..

I mean, the lyrics make it sound on the surface like a kid's nursery rhyme or summat, but you dont really have to go on a long mental journey to see the underlying darkness and sinister overtones.. Which is probably why Fincher chose it to punctuate certain scenes in his film....

Found out this about the song..................

A hurdy-gurdy is an odd instrument resembling an organ grinder. It is played by turning a crank and pressing buttons to play notes.

Donovan in the London Daily Mail Weekend magazine dated 20th May 2006 said, "I was intrigued by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's teachings of transcendental meditation, which were also followed by The Beatles. I went with The Beatles and George's wife, Patti Boyd, Cynthia Lennon and Jane Asher to stay with the Maharishi in the Himalayas for 3 months. For a while, Mia Farrow and her sister Prudence, shared the bungalow next to mine. She inspired John Lennon to write Dear Prudence. Hurdy Gurdy Man was influenced by the sounds I heard there."

Main article: Led Zeppelin

During his time as a session player, Jones often crossed paths with guitarist Jimmy Page, a fellow session veteran. In June 1966, Page joined The Yardbirds, and in 1967 Jones contributed to their Little Games album. The following winter, during the sessions for Donovan's The Hurdy Gurdy Man, Jones expressed to Page an interest in being a part of any projects the guitarist might be planning. Later that year, The Yardbirds disbanded, leaving Page and bassist Chris Dreja to complete some previously booked Yardbirds dates in Scandinavia. Before a new band could be assembled, Dreja left to take up photography. Jones inquired to Page about the vacant position, and the guitarist eagerly invited Jones to collaborate, later explaining:

I was working at the sessions for Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man, and John Paul Jones was looking after the musical arrangements. During a break, he asked me if I could use a bass player in the new group I was forming. He had a proper music training, and he had quite brilliant ideas. I jumped at the chance of getting him.

So this song led to Led Zeppelin getting their bass player :)

very interesting brian, thanks :)

i knew what a hurdy gurdy was, i also knew that donovan was with the beatles with the maharishi.

so in a way 'hurdy gurdy man' was a pre-zep track, it certainly had some very heavy riffs..

chris dreja is still a successful photographer, look him up in the directories, hes in london and theres only 1 'dreja'...

4 Cupid's Inspiration - Yesterday Has Gone.........I love this song

absolutely!

but its very 'anti' retro! i must admit that that the time i was upset by it, as ive always liked 'retro' and to dismiss retro was imho wrong. however, im not 11 now! of course i like retro... but it IS 'gone departed' and i do believe 'all that really matters is right now'. 'theres no use living in the past'.... spot on, remember it with fondness, but it is history.
