SOUL II SOUL waiting to be de-throned by SIMPLY RED, on the following week. 1989 was definately SOUL II SOUL`s year...GET A LIFE and BACK TO LIFE both hitting the top of the Network Chart. Big albums, all the way with the NOW DANCE series. TRANSVISION VAMP and the tantilising WENDY JAMES. PRINCE taking us to the movies, with BATMAN (the first re-make in 21 years), which upset original 1960s Batman star ADAM WEST (who at this time, probably thought that he was Batman, anyway)!! MICHAEL KEATON played the part, at this point. MADONNA was going back up the album chart (just like this week). NENEH CHERRY brought us RAW LIKE SUSHI which contained a number of singles, including MANCHILD. TOM PETTY had his biggest chart album (breaking away, from the TRAVELLING WILBURYS project). QUEEN released their first album, in over 2 years "THE MIRACLE". CHAKA KHAN gave us her re-mix album "LIFE IS A DANCE", with remixes of "I`M EVERY WOMAN", and "AIN`T NOBODY". PAUL MCCRTNEY had a few singles, from his album. HIT FACTORY 3 was another STOCK, AITKEN AND WATERMAN best of. The top film in this week, of 89 was "BEACHES". The soundtrack was at 25, and featured the likes of BETTE MIDLER.

With 4 new entries, to the top 40 in 1989, it looked a bit like today! Although, when you see the 41 - 50, things were a lot different. SONIA got a number one. LONDON BOYS followed up "REQUIEM", with LONDON NIGHTS. BETTE MIDLER took the track, from BEACHES, and took it into the top 3 (WIND BENEATH MY WINGS was originally recorded by GLADYS KNIGHT, in 1976...when she called it by the original title "HERO"). Down went SOUL II SOUL. BOBBY BROWN`s "ON OUR OWN" was the theme to GHOSTBUSTERS II. PET SHOP BOYS were still going strong. A GUY CALLED GERALD gave us, the house track "VOODOO RAY". KARYN WHITE sang "I`M NOT YOUR SUPERWOMAN", and took weeks, to get up the chart. GLADYS KNIGHT provided the theme to the Bond film "LICENCE TO KILL". DE LA SOUL provided an anti drugs anthem, based on an old DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES hit. NORMAN COOK, of course became FATBOY SLIM (a few years later). PRINCE and the title track, to BATMAN. M (and ROBIN SCOTT) put POP MUSIK back in the top 20, 10 years on. KIRSTY MACCOLL covered the KINKS song "DAYS", from 1968. LA MIX got another hit, after 88`s "CHECK THIS OUT". DANNY WILSON sang THE SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE, a-tributing the current acid house scene. On the house scene, we had other hits, from DOUBLE TROUBLE, DOUG LAZY, and D MOB. Yep 1989, when all the girls started wearing Doc Martens, and dance was definately on the rise. Then along came JIVE BUNNY (excerpting spliced up, snatches of 1950s hits), and eventually selling 750,000 copies. JESUS JONES came on to the fore, but had their bigger hit(s) in the early part, of the 90s. EARTHA KITT, joined up with BRONSKI BEAT (minus JIMMY SOMERFIELD), and put on her "CHA CHA HEELS", very entertaining! ROXETTE and "DRESSED FOR SUCCESS", was a bigger hit, later on. The better hits, in the chart came GUN (BETTER DAYS, was brilliant), and THE THE were justed about finishing, with the singles chart.

(The 1989 charts were compiled by MRIB - MEDIA RESEARCH INFORMATION BUREAU, for the Independant Radio Network).

Hang around, because Dave will complete the thread, with the latest singles chart...soon.

) Position without downloads alone. Without downloads alone Black Kids are 48, The Feeling 49, Utah Saints 50, CSS 51, Stop And Stare 52, and the Cure at 53.

= Is the position on Chart Show tv

There is about 1,000 between Dizee, and McFly. Outside the top 60, tonight: The Feeling are 62, CSS are 64, The Cure, are neck and neck with the guys, from the Mamma Mia Soundtrack with "Honey Honey" (which was covered in Britain during 1974, for the session group Sweet Dreams). Honey Honey sits at 67 tonight, and The Cure are 66. Losers this week are: Linkin Park "Leave Out All The Rest", Kid Sister/Kanye West "Pro Nails", and Avenged Sevenfold with "Dear God". The biggest one to lose out is Richard Hawley, and "Rockabilly Radio".

Next week look out for albums from Primal Scream, CSS, a trio of remasters from U2, and new compilations Now 70, and Put Your Hands Up. On the singles front, look out for Captain, Chaka Khan/Mary J. Blige, Doug Walker, Ida Maria, Melee, Roisin Murphy, Sneaky Sound System, and the physical release of Adele`s "Hometown Glory", and Usher`s "Moving Mountains".

NOTE: This is not the Official chart. It is compiled by taking a look at the Chart Show tv chart, and brought up to date, with added sales info from stores/download sites. As regulars know, come Sunday it will be a similar looking chart. The Chart Show top 20, can be seen, on Chart Show tv (Sky Channel 355) on Saturdays 3 - 5pm.

Remember the Official Chart, can now be seen in video form, on VH1 (Sky Channel 346) Mondays 7 - 10pm, and on MTV Hits (Sky Channel 343)Tuesdays 4 - 7.30pm.

Is it me, or does the top 40 singles look exactly like the official chart this week in some places. :o
You have to laugh at McFly's download sales, although it's good to see a physical sell over 20k in 2008 even though it's down to HMV offers and hype.
Is it me, or does the top 40 singles look exactly like the official chart this week in some places. :o

Yep, Mart!n! Actually the top 25 (apart from McFly), has been quite static over the last couple of days, hasn`t it?

Cast an eye, over the top pre-orders at HMV

01 If This Is Love - The Saturdays (released 28th July)

02 Disco Lights - Ultrabeat/Darren Styles (released 21st July)

03 Shut Up And Let Me Go - Ting Tings (released 21st July)

04 Lay Your Love On Me - BWO (released 28th July)

05 21st Century Life - Sam Sparro (released 28th July)

06 Five Years Time - Noah And The Whale (released 4th Aug)

07 Hometown Glory - Adele (released 21st July)

08 Built To Last - Melee (released 21st July)

09 Moving Montains - Usher (released 21st July)

10 Pictures - Sneaky Sound System (released 21st July)

11 Movie Star - Roisin Murphy (released 21st July)

12 Echoes Of Fashion - Captain (released 21st July)

Kylie will now only be available on downloads with "The One". Can the Saturdays, make the top ten, with "If This Is Love?"

Quick Saturday midday update, on last night`s chart.

Revealing that Sharleen Spiteri is now 26, switching with September at 27.

Unfortunately Basshunter, go back up further with "Now You`re Gone", at 39 switching with Alphabeat (10,000 Nights).

Happily, "Disco Lights", and Ultrabeat/Darren Styles is up to 41.

Adele`s "Hometown Glory", goes to 47.

The top 25, is not much changed. As to McFly`s missing sales, don`t believe the hype on that. If HMV lost 3,000 physical sales, then their computers must be at fault, because when you buy a physical recording, it automatically registers a sale with chart compilers Milward Brown. So, I doubt that very much. I could understand a loss in downloads, but McFly wouldn`t lose 3,000 in downloads because they only had about 4,000 (and that was from all download sites, across Britain). On HMV`s download chart, McFly are only 29.
