Due to its download-only release, Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' had no official video, but when was the last #1 *before that* that didn't have one?

 

My guess would be late 70's/early 80's sometime (I don't count the recent Elvis ones, since they were re-releases).

There havent been any recent ones, so youre probably right in saying its back in the 70/80's

I think that is the only one, which is pretty recent, I'm sure somewhere else can shed more light on it.

I'm sure there was at least one in the early 90's - back when the chart show just used to show a wobbly photo of the cover art instead of the video.

There was a Manic Street Preachers song in 1999/2000 I think, that made number 1 on a very limited release. It didn't have a video.

Michael Jacksons 'I just can't stop loving you' had no video, I remember TOTP not showing it at the time whereas 'The Roxy' (ITV's shortlived answer to TOTP) had their own homemade video!

I think the same case was for Stardust's 'Music Sounds Better With You' at the same time, but that was only a #2.

I remember watching TOTP when Stardust got to No.2. As there was no promo, they shot their own video of this girl dancing along to it with animation in the background or something like that.

Guess it was like going back to the days of Pan's People/Legs & Co when there were hardly any music videos and the act couldn't perform in the studio so they brought on the dancing girls. Well, dancing girl in this case!!

The first official video is said to be Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen in 1975

 

There were many before this that had what they called Promotional Films (videos by another name really except they were recorded on film instead of video tape)

NO. That's obviously a 30 second video clip looped again and again... I guess a 'fan' made that from the iTunes advert stateside. ;)

TOTP that week insisted on showing a black and white video, which was from the Manic Millenium NYE show a few weeks previous.

 

That was one of the worse episodes of the show ever.

UGH, Coldplay *pukes*, another annoying band in the long list in "The 'in' things to like", why won't they just suffer a Darkness-like backlash!!?.
