Will Young to judge story competition

26.03.09 Katie Allen

"Pop star Will Young is to judge the BBC National Short Story Award, which launches today.

He will be joined by chair, broadcaster and journalist Tom Sutcliffe, author Dame Margaret Drabble, Orange Prize-winner Helen Dunmore and BBC Radio 4’s editor Di Speirs to judge the competition, which is in its fourth year, and the world's largest for a short story. The winning author receives £15,000, with the runner-up receiving £3,000 and three further authors £500 each.

The award is at the centre of UK-wide campaign "short"; both launched in 2005 with the aim of expanding opportunities for British writers, readers and publishers of the short story. Shortlisted authors in the past have included Jackie Kay, Hanif Kureishi, Rose Tremain and William Trevor.

Mark Damazer, BBC Radio 4 controller, said: I am delighted BBC Radio 4 is backing the National Short Story Award. In each of the three years of the award's existence the audience has been treated to some wonderful readings of the finalists' work. And there's been a fascinating mix of well known writers and younger talents. I look forward to another year of glorious short story prose.”

The shortlist will be announced on 27th November with the five stories broadcast on BBC Radio 4 each weekday before the winner is announced. The five stories will also be published in a special collection."

Thanks to mrssoul & willsdoc.

Judging a short story competition is all very nice and interesting, but I hope to gawd it was something more exciting than that that saw him 'away with the fairies at the Moet & Chandon do. :D

2 months after the event? that's pushing it a bit TT, even for Will, I'm still hoping it's about music or an acting role. I'm moving house soon and so I'll be offline quite a lot this month, it'll take me a week just to pack all my Will stuff up.

National Portrait Exhibition.

Gay Icons, a photography exhibition held to celebrate the contribution of gay people to history and culture, will open at the National Portrait Gallery this summer.

The 60 photographs featured have been chosen by ten selectors: Singer Sir Elton John; Labour peers Waheed Alli and Chris Smith; Ben Summerskill of Stonewall; comedian Sandi Toksvig; actor Sir Ian McKellen; musician Sir Elton John; tennis champion Billie Jean King; and writers Alan Hollinghurst, Sarah Waters and Jackie Kay.

Each of the selectors chose six icons who have inspired them.

The icons, who are not all gay, include Nelson Mandela, Harvey Milk, Princess Diana, Ellen Degeneres, kd lang, Joe Orton, David Hockney and Will Young.

Sandy Nairne, director of the National Portrait Gallery, said: "Gay Icons is an exhibition in which inspiring stories – both private and public – are shared. These are stories of brave lives and significant achievements, told through iconic photographic images chosen by selectors who are themselves icons."

The exhibtion will run from July 2nd to October 18th and is timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York.

More respect & admiratin for Will from fellow musicians.

From the digital booklet from the What About Me Dvd.

(26/08/05)We've had many top moments whilst on 1 Giant Leap duty. One of these

has to be playing at Live 8 in Edinburgh. There'd been a lot of fuss that the musicians

of Africa were not being represented on the line-up. Not sure how (probably

something to do with a phone call with Jamie!). but at the last minute they asked us if

we could get something together featuring some African musicians. We had been

doing gigs so we had an 11piece band all rehearsed and rocking we just needed to

add some African artists. In the band we feature Ghanaian legend Nana Tsiboe and we

invited the Mahotella Queens and Geoffrey Oryema (who we hadn't worked with

before) booked a rehearsal room for a couple of days and started working on the two

tracks we would play. Maxi agreed to come and do My Culture with us and then out of

the blue we got a call from the organisers to say that Will Young loved 1GL and

wanted to join us on stage and sing Robbie William's parts. Suddenly, there we were,

playing live to 60,000 people in Edinburgh with God knows how many people watching

on the BBC. Will was so gorgeous. When we chatted backstage we said he MUST come

over to Mallorca (where we were editing) and write a song with us. And, blimey, he

did! He came for the weekend and we wrote the Truth is Changing. First bouncing off

Maxi's rap but landing beautifully on the Amapondo based tune. He sung a million

harmonies and really got into doing something different. Me too

Thanks to Carol on Devoted.

That makes for nice reading. He really does earn the respect of these people once they work with him. I think his enthusiasm is infectious :D
