Cheers for that BBC interview TT (and Ros), this bit was interesting as well I thought,
Biff lives in Brighton, we did a load together, we’re really good friends. The song that’s on the album he actually ended up producing, so all the songs we wrote together didn’t get on, which is a shame. They were really good songs, they just didn’t fit on the album.
I can remember reading Biff's mypage and him posting, that "Will's new music will blow your socks off" , maybe that's what Will means about doing another album next year, a double on with dance tracks on one side?

I really hope he does Suggy, I would have loved to have heard some of that old skool disco that Will & Biff wrote, if there is one little disappointment with the album, it's that none of Biff's stuff is on it , still, maybe next time.

Will was writing with Groove Armada a couple of years ago. I remember him talking about it on that silly Will on a Hill interview. They must have collaborated with the intention of getting the tracks out, so maybe, inbetween albums SBMG will let it happen. :)

interviewed by: Mark Youll Email this interview Printable version

It is hard to comprehend that it was over six years ago that pop darling Will Young first found fame at the hands of three million voting public as winner of 2002s Pop Idol. What’s probably easier to digest is the rightful global success that followed - a chart- topping, record- breaking, movie- making, Ivor Novello award- winning bullet-proof pop career that has almost swallowed all memory of his early reality TV triumph, not to mention Gareth Gates.

Will Young spoke to our own Mark Youll about his brand new album 'Let It Go’ and all other things pop......

The title of your new single, and also the focus of the rest of the album, is based around change. Could you explain the inspiration behind this theme?

It’s mostly what’s going on in my head. During the making of this record some of my inspiration came from unhappiness! (laughs) It’s like any frustration I might have usually comes out in the songs.

How would you say this record differs from your other albums?

I find it very hard to comment on the music I make. I just don’t know. I know that this is my most together album. It’s getting the best reviews I think I’ve had. It’s a very grown up album.

The album is a mature step forward for you.

Yeah, absolutely. It’s more embracing with pop. The thing is I think my last album (2005’s Keep On) was a great album, it was quite eclectic. For a pop album it was quite a brave record to make. This new album is a bit more unified, it needed to be that for some reason. Because I’ve been doing some acting people were becoming confused, so I unintentionally try to embrace pop again....

Maybe 'Let It Go’ is your 'Listen Without Prejudice’period?

That’s interesting. I really like George Michael’s stuff. Yeah, vocally I think I’m the most confident I’ve ever been. That’s the best thing about getting older, maturing, and going to places musically you haven’t been before. You don’t panic or freak out when things don’t go the way you want them to.At the moment I am very relaxed and confident as an artist, and as a writer...

You are writing a lot more on this record.

Yes, I love writing. I don’t think I gave myself credit before, but I feel now with songs like 'Changes’ and ' Grace’, which I think is a great pop song, I have got this credit. It’s down to people I work with like Kaz (Karen Poole), Cathy (Dennis) back in the day, Nitin (Sawhney), all these people, I ve just learnt so much from them. It 's what you would want from a masterclass if you like, I’ve been really lucky. Now I think that If I ever stopped singing, I would just keep writing...

The album’s songs and their lyrics spell a very personal message. Would you say this is a very personal record for you?

I think so. I don’t want it to be self-indulgent. I guess it’s what goes on in my head that comes out on the record. Normally matters to do with the heart confuse me. I hope it doesn’t come across too personal.

Do you feel under pressure in anyway to deliver hit records?

You do because it’s like a bit of a tightrope. You want to get something on radio, and that’s a big thing in itself. I want to write something accesible but not obvious to the point of it sounding dull, that’s quite a tall order. I do think you can make pop music with real integrity.

Which writers to you admire?

I love Joni Mitchell! Joni, Joan Armatrading and Stevie Wonder, I think they could be my favoutites. The words to that (Joan Armatrading) song 'Show Some Emotion’...' Some people are in love, but all they got is a photograph..' wow! that’s an amazing line. That is the sort of thing I want to write!

How would you descibe the transition of Will Young as Pop Idol to the Will Young sitting her today?

Lots of hard work and persistence. Moments of sadness here and there, but ultimatately... happiness.

How did you manage to adjust to the overnight instant success of a show like Pop Idol?

It was actually quite easy because for about three years following the show it was all about work. It was all a bit weird of course, but I think it wasn’t until maybe my last album that I thought things were getting tricky for me, then I got my inspiation back...

What is your real opinion on reality TV’s growing presence in the music business?

When I did it (Pop Idol) people got a bit stressed about the whole thing! (Laughs) Now it’s a staple part of Saturday night entertainment and I love it.

How did the acting come about?

Weirdly, I just had this desire to do some acting and then the film (Mrs Henderson, 2005) come about , which led to doing a play last year and I just want to do more now, I love it.

Any more movie roles in the pipeline?

No I haven’t. It’s really hard. It’s either people don’t want me or maybe my agent’s not working hard enough (laughs)

You get more regognised for your acting in the US.

Yeah, it’s hysterical. I pretend to be Johnathan Rhys Meyers! Yes, I was in 'Match point’! (sucks in cheeks) Yes, I would love to do more acting but it can be a struggle because people want to label you for one thing, maybe music or movies. I would like to do both so maybe I should mingle more at the right parties, but I’m not very good at smoozing! It’s so different to pop.

Have you achieved what you set out to achieve musically?

Yeah, but there’s always more. You very quickly forget. As soon as you get one thing, you want the next. I’ve got two more things, I want to perform on Jools Holland and sing at the Brits. Then I’ll have ticked all my boxes!

Loving to hear him referring to KO. You are right Will it is a great album.

Hope someone's listening as in Question Time to grant his wishes. It does no harm to hint. ;)

WILL GETS STEAMY

Will Young, who's just released his fantastic new album Let It Go, tells me he's gettting ft and toned with a new swimming regime. Speaking at the Vodaphone Live Music Awards at Brixton Academy, he said "I'm staying in shape by doing lots of swimming every day. Swimming and steaming is my new thing! I have a steam room in my gym - it's good for the skin and for my voice!" He also revealed his top style tips: I always wear matching colour co-ordinated socks and pants. Tonight, I've got on red pants and red socks!" Glad that's been confirmed...........

It's getting hot in here...... :naughty:

Wasn't sure where to put this. Thanks to griff on Devoted:

Little mention in the editorial section in MW ... love how they say Will's new album will have a significant say in how the sales market shapes up over the next few months

Thanks sunday. Great that Let It Go is being recognised as one of the big alboms of the year. :D It should have clocked up over 100k by now. :)

Thanks Sunday

I hope they extend the life of this album. KO was over and done with, apart from the tour, in about 7 months and I honestly believe there will be some pressure to take this album overseas as mentioned in an earlier music week article .I hope Wills current happiness with all things music, will spur him on to at least give it a try promoting abroad, this album deserves to, at the very least, be given a chance to be heard by a much bigger audience.

Please will someone post in here and let us know when Devoted comes back online? Isn't it awful without it? :(

Interview - Young Scot.

Will Young talks T in the Park and telephone trauma!

It's been a long day of interview after interview and hanging on the phone for him. Ever the gentleman, though, Will Young greets Young Scot so warmly that you'd think he'd just woken up in a beach hut in Barbados.

"Once you get on a roll, it's OK actually. But I try not to repeat the same thing over and over again. You get to a funny stage where you sort of almost step outside yourself and you think, who am I," he laughs, "and what the hell am I saying?"

This summer has been a breakthrough for the 2002 Pop Idol winner, performing at Glastonbury, V Festival and T in the Park, firmly asserting his intention to be taken seriously as an artist.

"[T in the Park] was the best gig of the summer for me, and I'm not just saying that. It's a rockier festival, so in that respect it was slightly more daunting, but it was the best crowd I had at any of the festivals. It was just such a great gig and the audience were amazing - they were just so up for it!"

Will has been a fan of our fair country of Scotland since his childhood, with fond memories of trips to Dumfries and Galloway.

"I love Dumfriesshire. I still try and get there when I'm on tour. The beautiful hills, and I love getting out and walking with the dogs. It's such a beautiful part that maybe people miss because they tend to head further up."

His forthcoming tour stops off at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall for two nights next month (20th and 21st). He tells us,

"I haven't done a theatre tour for four years. It's nice to have something a bit more intimate. It's just going to be really simple. I've got a great band, I think the songs will stand up really well and as long as I sing them OK, it should be good!"

'Let It Go' - his fourth album - is out now, and sees Will combine soulful pop tendencies with a pretty organic style of heartfelt songwriting. "I think it's the most concise album," he explains.

"It was a very easy process, and I think that's why the songs feel quite honest. Before I've tried to do different things and it's been sort of forced. This time it hasn't been forced, and hence the whole experience has been a lot more pleasurable and relaxed."

So what about the future for Mr. Young? Considering all that he's achieved, with no.1s and awards galore, performing for the Queen, performing with the rock band Queen... surely there's nothing left to tick off the list?

"I really want to do more acting. I'm really happy as long as I'm doing creative things that I think have a purpose to them, and it's not just being on the production line of churning out things for the sake of it. It's the best thing about where I am just now. I can do things that I actually think are creatively worthwhile and fulfilling."

While Will Young has always wanted to be a performer, before pursuing that career he got a degree in Politics - and looking back, he has no regrets about putting his ambitions off for those extra three years.

"I think it was really important. It just gave me time to think about what I wanted to do and it gave me a bit of knowledge about how the country works."

And like a true politician, Will managed to sidestep a purposefully obtuse question that we threw his way - if Gareth Gates were to call up and ask to do a duet to help him relaunch his career, what would Will do?

He laughs, "I can't answer that question!"

And then, after some deliberation he diplomatically concludes: "We've done one duet, so I think two duets would probably be too much."

Unflapped by our gentle grilling, Will seems like such a positive and charming gent that it's quite hard to imagine him ever getting irate - and quite a few people have told us he's the nicest man in the biz. But what does rile him up?

"Bureaucracy in this country makes me angry. When you have to phone people and press '1' for this and '2' for that, put all your details in, and then the first thing they do is ask what your details are. I don't understand that. I don't actually see the point in it."

A side to Will Young that perhaps not many people notice is his dedication to good causes. He's got a whole section of his website dedicated to the charities he supports, with one of the most notable ones being his brother's charity, Mood Foundation.

"[it] supports people who have varying degrees of depression. Just today he got someone into Equine therapy, which is working with horses. There's not enough charities that deal with people who have depression, and yet it's very rife in this country and it's a very worthwhile cause."

And on that applaudable note, it's time for Will to continue his interview marathon and for us to go. He really is as lovely as they all say, with a wise head on those popstar shoulders and an awesome new album of which he is rightfully very proud.

Will's new album 'Let It Go' is out now.
