London rapper Dizzee Rascal and collaborators Calvin Harris and Chrome have seen their current single Dance Wiv Me become the fifth single of 2008 to have spent at least a month at the top of the UK charts, following singles from Basshunter, Duffy, Estelle and Madonna. Kid Rock’s All Summer Long has climbed a further place to a new peak of No.2 while No Air by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown is back up to No.3 this week.

Dance Wiv Me almost lost the No.1 spot to McFly last week but proves its worth as a chart topper by staying at the top for a fourth time this week. McFly meanwhile have followed the usual pattern of their singles by tumbling nineteen places to No.21 this week, although perhaps this slide was so severe because the track and McFly’s entire new album were available for free in the Mail On Sunday last week. Kid Rock’s All Summer Long entered the top forty at No.6 two weeks ago before its physical release lifted it to No.3 last week. As so many singles do nowadays, the American singer jumps up a further place a week after his physical release, now a No.2 hit in the UK. Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown have had an eccentric chart run so far, having moved 22-10-3-4-3-5-3 in their first seven weeks in the top forty with No Air. The track’s latest climb back up to No.3 is a combination of the decline of McFly twinned with the ‘Now 70 effect’ which has become very apparent in other parts of the chart this week.

Ne-Yo’s former No.1 single Closer, also on Now 70, is one of the biggest tracks to benefit from downloader’s cherry picking their favourite tracks from the latest edition of the biggest British compilation series this week. The single climbs back up two places to No.4 while Basshunter’s All I Ever Wanted slides a further place to No.5 having peaked at No.2 two weeks ago. The Ting Tings reach a new peak with Shut Up & Let Me Go. Last week’s No.9 from the Salford based indie pop duo climbs three places to No.6 after its physical release. Young Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi’s former No.6 hit Sweet About Me has been one of the most popular individually downloaded tracks from Now 70, and duly reclaims its position in the top ten, jumping back to No.7 this week, having fallen to No.12 last week. The song has spent sixteen weeks inside the top forty in total so far, seven of those inside the top ten. London rapper Ironik stays at No.8 with Stay With Me (Everybody’s Free), a former No.5 hit which has been in the top ten for four weeks now. Rihanna’s Take A Bow is yet another re-climber in the top ten this week, the former No.1 single moving back into the top ten from No.11 last week to No.9 this week, and pushing Madonna’s Give It 2 Me down three places to No.10. The top ten this week therefore includes three Brits, four Americans, a Swede, a Barbadian and an Australian, and for the first time in a while, only one song by Chris Brown.

Outside the top ten there is much more of the same this week, with many older hits moving back up the chart due to their appearance on Now 70. Sam Sparro’s huge No.2 hit Black & Gold moves back up six places to No.11 this week followed by Duffy’s Warwick Avenue, a former No.3 single, which is back up four places to No.12. The Ting Tings’ former No.1 single That’s Not My Name jumps back up two places to No.13, having spent eleven weeks on the UK chart so far. Last week’s new entry from London based folk-indie group Noah & The Whale, 5 Years Time (Sun Sun Sun) is making steady progress up the chart, still from download sales alone, and jumps up ten places from No.24 to No.14 this week, and looking poised to become a top ten hit in the coming weeks when the physical is released. Norwegian rock singer Ida Maria Børli Sivertsen, better known as simply Ida Maria, has been heavily tipped by many corners of the music industry and she makes her first ever chart appearance this week with new single, I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked, the anthemic indie-pop track going straight in at No.18 this week after a simultaneous physical and digital release. Her debut album, Fortress Around My Heart is released on Monday.

Adele is the next newcomer to the top forty, or rather a re-entry as Hometown Glory, Adele’s third physically released UK single, has already made the chart before on download sales. It originally reached No.32 as a cherry picked album track, and then returned at No.38 after its usage in teen drama Skins. Now a single in its own right, it gives the young British singer her third hit single, returning to the top forty at a new peak of No.19 this week. Estelle’s former No.1 single American Boy is closing in on the 400,000/gold sales barrier now and climbs back up five places to No.23 this week, the song of course being the opening track on Now 70. Usher’s Moving Mountains looks like it will end up as his smallest hit for over a decade as following its physical release, it can only limp up a further seven places to No.28, in a chart dominated by old hits rather than new singles. There is however a new entry at No.30. Irish trio The Script reached No.15 with debut single We Cry earlier in the year. New single, the anthemic The Man Who Can’t Be Moved, debuts at No.30 with just a couple of days worth of download sales and looks certain to glide into the top five next week when it is physically released.

Colchester born Hardcore dance producer Darren Styles and Liverpudlian act Ultrabeat have teamed up for the second time and score the next new entry at No.31 this week with Discolights. The song was at No.41 last week but climbs into the top forty for the first time this week, no doubt aided by the fact that it is also on Now 70. The track receives its physical release next week, where it should progress further. Darren has made the singles chart before as part of Styles & Breeze who had hits in 2004 & 2005 with You’re Shining & Heartbeatz. Both of these tracks are on his current solo album Skydivin’, a surprise top five success a few weeks ago. Liverpudlian dance act Ultrabeat, also on Darren’s record label All Around The World, had their biggest hit in 2003 with their debut single Pretty Green Eyes, which was a huge No.2 success. Their last single to reach the top forty was Elysium (I Go Crazy), a No.35 hit in 2006. The former No.1 single from Mint Royale, Singin’ In The Rain, returns at No.35 this week, another beneficiary of the ‘Now 70 effect whilst Alphabeat are back up four places to No.36 with 10,000 Nights. Now 70’s final chart push is Scouting For Girls’ former No.10 single Heartbeat, which is the second re-entry of the week, back into the top forty at No.37 this week.

The album chart is equally slow this week with no notable new entries meaning that Coldplay’s Viva La Vida Or Death & All His Friends returns to No.1 for a sixth week in total. Abba’s Gold – The Greatest Hits is still benefitting from the Mamma Mia film effect and climbs three places to No.2 this week. It is the highest that Gold, the 4th biggest selling album of all time in the UK, has been since 1999 when it returned to No.1 in that particular Abba revival. The album had since returned to No.4 in 2004. It also rather uniquely means that there are two Swedish acts in the album chart top three this week. Basshunter, the other Swede and last week’s chart topper, slides two places from No.1 to No.3 whilst Duffy stays at No.4 with Rockferry, now on its 21st week in the top four, and Sharleen Spiteri’s Melody eases down to No.5. The Ting Tings’ remain at No.6 with We Started Nothing and The Bachelors are straight in at No.7 with I Believe – The Very Best Of. Chris Brown is down a spot to No.8 with Exclusive – The Forever Edition while Primal Scream’s new album Beautiful Future makes its chart entrance at No.9 this week. Nickelback’s All The Right Reasons completes the top ten, sliding two places to No.10.

Next week’s chart could see Dizzee Rascal & Calvin Harris spend its fifth and final week at No.1, ahead of the scheduled download release of the current US No.1 and expected hit of the summer, I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry, which should storm straight in at the top of the chart when its released to iTunes. Kid Rock and Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown should stay high and Noah & The Whale can expect to find themselves in the top ten in seven days time. Notable physical releases are due from BWO, Natty, Pendulum, Pigeon Detectives, Sam Sparro, The Saturdays, The Script, Ultrabeat vs. Darren Styles and You Me At Six. The Saturdays are a new girl group featuring Rochelle and Frankie from S Club Juniors/8 and their Yazoo sampling debut release If This Ain’t Love, should be one of the biggest hits out of that lot when physically and digitally released on Monday. The Script have peaked at No.3 on iTunes so far and are therefore almost certain to be inside the top five next week with The Man Who Can’t Be Moved. Coldplay, Basshunter and Abba look set to battle it out for the top album again next week but there are a number of new albums out which will aim to stop Coldplay’s latest run. Kid Rock, Nine Inch Nails, Alice Cooper, Ida Maria, Melee, Scars On Broadway and Soulfly should all make some sort of impact next week, although compilation albums Now 70 and the Mamma Mia film soundtrack should continue to outsell the pack again, as they have done with ease this week.

The Katy Perry single is not out until 1 September, if her single goes to #1 on her download release it be 4 weeks before its physically released. Will it beat Umbrella

And we only had 10 #1s this year so far, we are already over half way

6 weeks until Will Young I suspect.

And we only had 10 #1s this year so far, we are already over half way

Even though we had a period of 1 and 2 week No1's recently the underlying trend has remained the same Rihanna would have had 4 weeks if it wasn't for a dance routine on Britain's Got Talent and Ne-Yo 2 weeks but for Coldplay's album track on the weakest sales week at the top for 18 months. Both Mint Royale and Coldplay were highly unusual/freak events, long running No1's shouldn't be a surprise.

I doubt it, Umbrella was No.1 for such a long time because of a low sales climate...Katy would have to last for all of August, September and some of October to beat Rihanna...

Thanks for writing again :D

Well the #1's have sped up a lot a while back but now may have gone back to their normal pace with Dizzee Rascal, and then if Katy Perry's hype turns into sales we could be in for a long wait until the next #1 after that :P

The Script are a bit too far behind the two front runners I think, plus The Saturdays will have good physicals, so I wouldn't be surprised if The Script end up at No.4
