September 2, 200915 yr Author I was disappointed to hear that the lovely Jerry Scheff won't be taking part in Elvis - The Concert this time, but he explains why in the following article, and for that, I respect his decision :) Message from Jerry Scheff Jerry Scheff wrote a message to the fans regarding his absence during the upcoming 2010 video concert tour. The message was published by the official TCB Band Fanclub. "Hello. I would just like to thank the many, many people who have taken the time to write expressing their love and consideration. I am deeply humbled by your concern. I am healthy and happy so please don't worry about me for one moment. I am just not playing the Stig Edgren show. It is so very good to hear from you all, Elvis' true family. You know who you are... and so do I. Much love to you, Jerry." Published: September 2nd 2009 10:00 AM. Source: TCB Band Fanclub / Published by: ElvisMatters
September 5, 200915 yr Author Elvis Returns to the Shell :yahoo: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/oshell.jpg On July 30th, 1954, a young Elvis Presley played what is considered his first real public concert at the Overton Park Shell. Elvis' first single for Sun Records, the now-legendary "That's All Right (Mama)," had just been released, and Presley was a relatively unknown opening act on a multi-artist bill headlined by country singer Slim Whitman. Elvis would perform several shows at the shell over the next year, before becoming the biggest star rock-and-roll would ever know. This fall, the King returns, in a way, to the venue that launched him when Elvis, the 1968 NBC television special now popularly known as "The '68 Comeback Special," will be screened in the park as part of the 12th Indie Memphis Film Festival. The screening will take place at 7 p.m., Friday, October 9th, at the recently refurbished and renamed Levitt Shell. The screening is being presented by Elvis Presley Enterprises and co-presented by the Levitt Shell and the Memphis Flyer. It will be free and open to the public. "Elvis changed the world with his performance of 'That's All Right' at the Overton Park Shell 55 years ago. It's exciting that a whole new generation of Memphians will be able to experience that song and many others in the same venue in 2009," Scott Williams, vice president of marketing for Elvis Presley Enterprises, said in a release announcing the event. September 13, 200915 yr Author First, some good news :cheer: James Burton to build recording studio for kids The August concert by James Burton in Shreveport Louisiana was a huge success, and because of that, James and his wife Louise are going to install a recording studio in the Foundation Office for the kids to record free. The James Burton International Guitar Festival was created to help raise funds for the James Burton Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to raising money to provide technical training, music lessons and free guitars to young musicians. James was fortunate that his parents sacrificed to purchase his first Fender guitar. Through his humble beginnings, James learned that a quality instrument is very important. It's been James' dream to give back to the community by helping young musicians realize their potential. Your participation in the James Burton International Guitar Festival and donation to the James Burton Foundation enables future generations of musicians to keep the music alive! The record shop that's boosted the careers of legends like Elvis Presley and B.B. King is closed for good. Poplar Tunes shut its doors Thursday, posting a sign on the door thanking customers for decades of business. The King of Rock and Roll released his first record at the downtown store. Longtime Memphis music legend George Klein knew Presley personally. He remembers hanging out at Pop Tunes with him back in the day. "More often than not, Elvis Presley would walk in, because there was nothing happening in Memphis after 10 in those days," said Klein. Memphis' original record shop is now sealed up. Doors locked. Customers walked away Friday, disappointed. "I did not know they were closed," said customer Jimmy Johnson. He would occassionally shop for music here after work. "A lot of people like myself would want the original copy instead of something off the internet," said customer Eddie Blevins. The sign posted on the door says the store just couldn't compete with big-box retailers and the internet. Add to that the high cost of operation and it was reduced to quote "road kill with a slight pulse." "Nationwide I think it was regarded as one of the last great record stores," said longtime Memphis DJ Steve Conley. Callers on his morning show shared memories today. "I had a story on the air today, the caller said 'When I was 6 years old, my dad took me to Pop Tunes and I bought a needle for my Mickey Mouse record player," he said. He says the internet has dramatically changed the landscape of the music business. "The days of the old record stores as we know it, I guess are gone," he said. Mom and Pop shop record stores, even with a history as rich as this one are finding it impossible to keep up. Source: Various / Updated: Sep 11, 2009 I am so sorry to hear that another special location in Elvis ‘history’ has gone. I was lucky enough to visit Poplar Tunes in October 2005 and I even bought a record there. :( http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/IMG_0459.jpg

September 24, 200915 yr Author Some sad news again about an Elvis related site :( Circle G ranch for sale You could own a piece of pop culture, but it'll cost you a pretty penny. Elvis Presley’s old ranch in Horn Lake, known as the Circle G is now up for sale. Prudential Realty put up ‘for sale’ signs yesterday. The asking price for the King of Rock n' Roll's old ranch is 6.5 million dollars. For that amount, you'll get 154.5 acres of land. Desoto County records show Elvis Presley bought the property back in 1972. It was sold in 1977-- the year of his death. The family that now owns the land purchased it in 1980. Since then, there have been a few attempts to sell it. Seven years ago, it appeared the old ranch would be the site of a Circle G resort- complete with shops, golf courses and hotels. That deal-- and another one to turn it into a Stars resort-- both eventually fell through. “We tried to get it sold two times. Stars was the last one, but the money never came through. We got it through the Planning Commission, but the money didn't show” says Prudential Realtor Rodger Motz. Now, once again, a piece of Elvis' past is up for sale. The property just went on the market last month. So far, Prudential says they haven't heard from any potential buyers. September 26, 200915 yr Author Elvis vs. the Beatles/Elvis at 21 http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/wertheimer.jpg The debate between Elvis fans and Beatles fans over which rock god/gods were more important or influential has been waging for half a century. "Paul is still making music!" "Elvis shook the establishment!" "Elvis is king!" "Elvis was the hillbilly cat, and the Beatles were a bunch of Brits! Failing to like Elvis is UNAMERICAN!" And on and on and on. It's one of my favorite musical debates because in my experience all parties get incensed. But lucky for each camp, South Florida will be the destination for exhibits celebrating both: Boca Raton Museum of Art welcomes "Elvis at 21" on April 20. The exhibit includes 40 large-format photographs by Alfred Wertheimer, who was hired to shoot the star before he became the rock 'n' roll king. And Old School Square Cultural Center celebrates the 40th anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's famous Bed-in with the traveling award-winning Gerry Deiter exhibit "Give Peace a Chance: John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Bed-In for Peace." This exhibit makes its Florida debut October 5, runs through October 11, and includes 30 large format photographs by Deiter as well as contributor interviews, music, memorabilia, and screenings of Give Peace a Song, Hard Day's Night, and Let It Be. October 1, 200915 yr Author This is a wee bit technical for me, but sounds impressive :cheer: They're talking about the upcoming FTD release of the Jungle Room Sessions on vinyl B) What is 'DMM Copper Mastering'? FTD is promoting their vinyl releases with the fact that they are manufactured with DMM Copper Mastering. It seems to be that not many people know what this is and why this is so special. Therefor, we are giving you the (rather technical) explenation for it. In short, it means that the audio quality is far more superior then a regular vinyl release. Direct Metal Mastering (or DMM for short) is an analogue audio disc mastering technique jointly developed by two German companies, Telefunken-Decca (TelDec) and Georg Neumann GmbH, towards the end of the 20th century. Neumann was responsible for manufacturing the actual DMM cutting equipment as part of their VMS80 series lathes.
