Elvis Newseum, Washington exhibit:

The power of Elvis & the explosive impact he had on music and popular culture is the demonstrated in the Newseum exhibit featuring stage costumes and other professional and personal mementos from the Graceland collection.

The exhibit tells the story of Presley as he was portrayed in the news media and explores how his music and physicality pushed the boundaries of mainstream taste and free expression during a time when America was experiencing deep generational shifts.

Produced in collaboration with EPE the Newseum exhibit includes a number of rare objects from the Graceland vaults that have never before been publicly displayed. See private telegrams, letters and scrapbooks that chronicle Presley’s rise as a music and media sensation, as well as his death and his enduring legacy. The exhibit also includes an original Newseum-produced video featuring vintage

footage of the entertainer, from performances to press conferences, shown on a dazzling 90-foot-long video wall in the Newseum’s Big Screen Theater.

Relive some of the top headline making moments from Presley’s career, including:

• The breakthrough recordings that made music history.

• The smoldering performances that made him a symbol of youthful rebellion and a target of censorship.

• The early television appearances that created controversy and coverage.

• His White House meeting with President Richard M. Nixon.

• His shocking 1977 death, which dominated the news as no entertainer’s death ever had before.

The Newseum exhibit features rare photographs and original newspapers and magazines covering Presley’s career. Artifacts on loan from Graceland include Presley’s iconic 1957 Harley- Davidson motorcycle; the "American Eagle" jumpsuit and cape wore during the rehearsal for his 1973 Aloha From Hawaii concert, seen by more than 1 billion viewers worldwide; the gold and diamond belt presented to him in 1969 for breaking Las Vegas attendance records; and memorable costumes from his stage and screen appearances. Also included are rare news scrapbooks compiled by his manager, Col. Tom Parker, the coat and belt Presley wore during his historic 1970 White House meeting with Nixon and the memorial tribute book from his funeral.

Get well soon, Mr. Lansky

We just learned via email that Bernard Lansky ("Clothier to the King") is recovering from pneumonia. We wish Bernard a speedy and full recovery and hope to see him behind his counter in Memphis real soon! In case you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Lansky, here's a bit of history for you: zt the start of 1952, Bernard noticed a young white man who would continuously walk past his window and look inside, but never actually went to buy anything. Eventually, Bernard went to invite the man in. It was a seventeen-year-old Elvis Presley, who worked at the local Loew's Theatre. According to Bernard, Elvis told him that he was going to buy him out when he got enough money. Lansky responded: "Elvis, don't buy me, buy from me!" Once Elvis became an international superstar, Lansky Brothers still provided much of his attire, including his outfit for his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. "I put Elvis in his first suit, and I put him in his last," Lansky recalls. In 2001, Lansky's established a new line of clothing entitled "Clothier To The King," which provides reproductions of clothing that Elvis actually wore combined with new 1950s-inspired clothing. Lansky Brothers has since moved its location from Beale Street to Memphis' renowned Peabody Hotel, but is still as busy as ever. Bernard Lansky remains an ideal figure of Memphis history. Musicians that currently shop there include the Jonas Brothers, Robert Plant, Eddie Floyd, Stephen Stills, Steven Tyler, Dr. John, Gavin DeGraw, and numerous others.

Graceland Gates Damaged

The internationally famous music gates at Graceland have been damaged. At around 2.30 a.m. on Friday morning a black SUV drove through the Graceland Gates, in Memphis, Tennessee, damaging them. The occupant(s) then drove up to the mansion, shouted something to a Security Guard and then drove off.

Viva Elvis electrifies Las Vegas: :cheer:

Viva Elvis, the new Cirque de Soleil production hosted at the Aria Hotel and Resort, brings a new world of modern technology and elite artistry to the earthy, primal music of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Overseen by Cirque’s artistic guides, Guy Laliberte and Gilles Ste-Croix, the $100-million production was written and directed by Vincent Paterson. It follows Elvis Presley’s life and music, from his poverty-stricken childhood in Tupelo, Mississippi, to his record-breaking run on the Las Vegas Strip. Along the way, classic Cirque du Solei elements of acrobatics and stunt performance blend with original arrangements of Presley songs and dance numbers — marrying the Canadian company’s artsy, elaborate circus productions with the classic Americana, rock ‘n’ roll milieu of Graceland’s late owner and operator.

As with all of Cirque’s more recent productions, a tremendous amount of engineering and technical advancement went into Viva Elvis. Wired.com was offered an exclusive backstage tour of this Presley tribute.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/cirque_vivaelvis66.jpg

To serve up an idea of the backstage machinations, the staging area measures more than 150 feet from floor to ceiling. The sides and the rear of the stage are fixed areas, while the center is composed of 16 platforms, separated into 12 sections that can rise to a height of 10 feet. Depending on the scene, the platforms may at various times in the show support performers, singers, dancers or set elements. The widest platform measures 18 feet by 80 feet and is raised by four powerful motors 26 feet below the stage.

The most impressive technological achievement in the show might be the automated computer system that moves the massive set pieces designed by Mark Fisher. Weighing as much as 45 tons, many of the show’s larger backdrops, massive high-def video screens and acrobatic elements would require a small army to move into position. Even then, the odds that a sea of stagehands could do the moving with any measure of speed or precision are slimmer than a girl saying no to a date with Presley in 1956.

Also, when you have fearless acrobats flying hither and yon above hidden webs of life-preserving nets beneath the stage, the always-safety-conscious Cirque engineers need everything onstage to be exactly on point. So, the producers and designers employed a digital sensor system that reads the position of the sets — employing the torque of powerful rack-and-pinion engines to slide or elevate the necessary backdrops and props into place.

Stagehands position reflector tubes in key backstage positions. Digital readers locate the reflectors and use them as reference points to position the sets. If the set is dark for dramatic purposes or obscured by smoke effects, the system “remembers” where those reference points were.

If any moving show element goes as much as 5 mm out of line, the safety cut-offs kick in faster than a hip shimmy, freezing the set. Yes, the show stops in its blue suede shoes for a bit — but that’s better than an injury to a member of the company.

Viva Elvis is drawing strong crowds, despite the ongoing recession rocking the entertainment capital of the world. It’s contracted for a 10-year run at the Aria, and tickets start at $100. It’s a safe bet Elvis will not be leaving the building anytime soon.

“Thank you very much.”

Elvis joins the campaign trail: :yahoo:

The first signs of UK PM, Gordon Brown "upping the tempo" of his campaign have emerged. Brown has now arrived in Corby, Northamptonshire for an NHS rally, and is joined by an Elvis impersonator. In an apparent explanation he told the gathering:

‘I am going to be introducing Britain's Elvis Presley. Only 4% of people in the world now still believe Elvis Presley is alive. But I think there is only about 4% of people, by the end of this election campaign, that will believe that the Conservatives are not a risk to economic recovery in this country.’

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/Gordon-Brown-with-Elvis-i-006.jpg

The King's appearance could also explain Alastair Campbell's rather excited tweeting last night. He had promised that a "megastar" would be joining the prime minister today. He tweeted: ‘We are talking big. I mean mega. Could be highlight of campaign.’

Memphis Free Of Flooding

Memphis was fortunate enough to have not suffered any major flooding or damage after heavy rains moved through Memphis and across the state of Tennessee over the weekend. All roads, hotels, restaurants and Memphis area attractions such as Graceland and Beale Street are open and operating as normal.

Our hearts go out to our neighbors to the east here in the Volunteer State that have been impacted by this weather event. It is recommended that travelers headed to or from Nashville and the Middle Tennessee region check for road closures

I feel so sorry for the people of Nashville who have been affected and thank goodness Memphis escaped.

Is Elvis's daughter Lisa Marie leaving U.S. for England?:

Despite his huge following on this side of the Atlantic, Elvis never found the time to visit England. His daughter, by contrast, has become so enamoured with the UK that she is said to be looking to move her family over here.

Reports say Lisa Marie Presley is turning her back on her homeland, putting her two California homes up for sale and telling friends she hopes to resettle by the end of the year. The 42-year-old is said to have become sick of Los Angeles.

According to the National Enquirer magazine, the last straw was the revival last week of gossip claiming her ex-husband Michael Jackson was gay. Jackson’s long-time friend Dr Arnold Klein made the allegation after the late singer’s office manager Jason Pfeiffer went on TV in the US to claim he had a fling with his famous former boss. She and fourth husband Michael Lockwood, 49, are said to be looking to buy a stately home near London.

'During an extended stay there last year she made friends with the likes of Prince Andrew and Fergie, the Duchess of York, and she's excited about recording her first album since 2005 over there,' a source told the Enquirer. The singer has made no secret of her disdain for L.A., saying last year: 'The city has really gotten dramatically worse in the last five or six years, even more shallow if that’s even possible.

'I feel any place that is perpetually sunny suspect and wrong, anyway.

But Lisa Marie's mother Priscilla is not pleased about the plans, because she won't be able to see as much of her twin granddaughters.

She added: 'I can honestly say that I am the only person who came to England for the weather. I love the cold and the rain. We have fallen in love with the UK and it is our hope to live here some day.'

Raving about England during her trip last autumn, she added: ‘We have found the quality of life so much more enriching and fulfilling.

'The civility, the culture, the people and its beauty have reawakened me and have smoothed out some of my bleak and jagged views about people and life.’

But it is reported her plans have ignited a family feud with mother Priscilla, 64, who is said to be upset that she will not see as much of her granddaughters. Lisa Marie was at her mother’s side at the celebrations for what would have been her father’s 75th birthday at Graceland in January and at the Elvis Cirque du Soleil Viva show in Las Vegas in February.

'She’ll keep her getaway place in Hawaii and return periodically for Graceland business, but she plans on spending most of her time in Britain,’ the source told the Enquirer.

Wonder if Lisa will actually do it, we'll just have to wait and see B)

BBC Radio 2 Plans Elvis Presley Hyde Park Concert

BBC Radio 2 is planning a major concert in Hyde Park to celebrate the life and music of Elvis Presley. Details of the event have still to be confirmed by the broadcaster, but it is understood the concert - which is being held to mark what would have been Presley’s 75th birthday - will be hosted in Hyde Park this September.

It will feature an array of musical talent performing hits from Presley’s career. Earlier this year, Radio 2 broadcast a season of documentaries to mark what would have been Presley’s 75th birthday, and a source close to the network said the idea behind the Hyde Park event is to conclude the celebrations.

The source said: “If Elvis had lived he would have been 75 this year. Radio 2 had a big Elvis season in January and the event in Hyde Park will be an Elvis night featuring all of his songs and back catalogue.”

The Elvis concert follows last year’s Radio 2 Abba celebration in Hyde Park, which featured performances from Kylie Minogue, and 2008’s celebration of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music. It is being produced by Anthony Cherry.

A spokeswoman for Radio 2 said the broadcaster was not currently able to “confirm any details”.
