Some claim that the first 6 songs of the opening show on Friday were taped with news camera's, others fear that the only excisting footage are amateur recordings. Anyway, in the mail this morning was the latest magazine of the German EPG fanclub, with an indepth report on the Square Garden shows... among the many pictures, we also spotted these two: note the camera on each photo! September 17, 200816 yr Author Mega-convention centre to destroy Beale St? :o The title of the article sounds like science-fiction or real horror for all those people that once spend time on Memphis’ most authentic place: Beale Street, Home of the Blues. How impossible it may sound, project developers are thinking out loud to let Beale St disappear in favor of a mega-convention center with a 700-bed hotel. All started with the battle between the states to largest cities: Nashville and Memphis. Nashville is the city that attracts the largest conventions with twice the amount of hotel beds that Memphis can offer at this moment. The developers are saying that the best location for the centre would be the location between the FedEx forum and the Autozone sport park: at the exact location of Beale St. To make things even worse, these plans are supported by the mayor of Memphis. According to him, Beale St has lost his splendor: the street is not save anymore, there are lots of pan handlers, teenagers are ruling over the neighborhood, the buildings are in such bad shape that they can’t be restored anymore and merchants are complaining about a loss of income with more than 15%. Still according to the mayor, more than enough reasons to clean up the area and get rid of part of America’s most important place in music history. The plans are also perfect in his vision to give Memphis a more ‘urban’ look. How absurd all these plans may sound, it will not happen so fast in real life. The MidSouth Coloseum site is ready to be demolished, The Pyramid is not in use for years, the FedEx Forum has more dark nights than it is open, the nearby Cook Convention Centre was just refurbished and the financial situation of the city does not allow such a large scale project with an estimated cost of $600 million. Sure it's not mega modern, but who wants that. This was where Elvis used to listen to the music before he became a star. I just loved the atmosphere there, especially in the evenings. One fantastic memory I had, was of eating in BB Kings club and watching the most terrific blues band  And the food they serve on Beale Street is soooooooooo yummy  If they want to build a mega convention centre, great,I'm sure they can find another part of Memphis but leave Beale Street as it is :)
September 19, 200816 yr Author Cirque du Soleil Elvis show update: Utah dancers, it's time to slip on your blue suede shoes. Cirque du Soleil, the international performance/circus troupe that has become known for its spectacular-sized productions such as "O" and "Mystère," is designing a new show around the music of Elvis Presley for next year. And renowned Utah choreographer Bonnie Story has been tapped to develop the show's dancing. Consequently, Salt Lake City is one of four cities that will hold auditions for the show, which plans to hire at least two dozen dancers. Story was hired by theater, film and video choreographer/director Vincent Paterson, who is directing the Elvis show. She has known Paterson for some 20 years, since working as his assistant. "I just know his work, and I know his mind and his way, and he just trusts me," the choreographer said. "We're always on the same page. It¹s like we came from the same school. He¹ll throw out an idea or I¹ll say something, and it will not just be out of left field for him." Story won an Emmy for her choreography for "High School Musical," and designed the dance sequences of other movies, including the "HSM" sequels and "The American Mall." Details about the production have been tightly held. The show, which will feature Elvis' music in much the same way The Beatles were featured in the Cirque show "Love," is scheduled to premiere in November 2009 at the new CityCenter Resort-Casino in Las Vegas. "The creative combination of live musicians and singers, projections, dance and the latest in multimedia sound and lighting technology are stimulating and aim at offering an emotional bond with the audience," according to a statement by CKX Inc., the entertainment company producing the show. "The show will bring Elvis back to Las Vegas for millions of his existing fans and create a buzz that will enable the persona of Elvis to reach untold numbers of new fans." Holding Utah tryouts alongside auditions in New York City, Los Angeles and Las Vegas is an acknowledgment of the state's growing reputation for talented dancers from the "HSM" movies and reality TV shows such as "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Dancing With the Stars." "I told Cirque, 'If you guys want to see some major talent, come to Salt Lake,' Story said. "The kids are dedicated. Kids from Utah will want to be in it. They're incredibly trained. Utah is getting such a great reputation now. And it wasn¹t hard. They kind of just trusted me." In fact, Paterson was in town earlier this month for a workshop with Story for the show, "and he offered five contracts on the spot after we got through," she said. Story said she's looking for "advanced, very versatile, athletic" dancers for the production, which will offer performers a two-year contract. "It's a show that people from Utah can be very proud to be in ," she said. "It will be a family show. Whoever comes, they do need to be ready for a very technical audition." (News, Source: Vince Horiuchi, The Salt Lake Tribune) This is going to be great for Elvis  Update Cirque Du Soleil http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/aria_lasvegas.jpg The Elvis themed Cirque Du Soleil show is scheduled to start in late 2009, when the 'City Centre' will open its doors. The building has been given its official name this week and will be known as 'ARIA Resort and Casino'. The architects are talking about a never before seen experience that has no previous examples on the Strip. The show that Cirque is producing, has nothing to do with the building of the 'E-Resort'. The ARIA resort is build between the Bellagio and Monte Carlo, while the site for the 'E-Resort' is still occupied by the Harley Davidson café and the Hawaiian Village. Published: September 17th 2008 08:54 AM. Source: Memphis Flyer / Published by: ElvisMatters - David Hamal Update Beale Street rumoured Mega-Convention Centre unlikely: Memphis journalist John Branston reports that although changes may be coming to Beale Street, the rumoured Mega-Convention Centre is unlikely. A couple of things have fired up the rumour mill. John Elkington, head of the leasing company for Beale Street since 1982, has made it clear he is ready to walk away from his long-term lease if the terms are right. A mediation hearing for the Beale Street Development Corporation is scheduled to take place in a few weeks to determine who owes what to whom. However it is said that the chances of Memphis getting a new convention center are very slim. The city has tapped out its main source of funding, the so-called bed tax on hotels that is helping to pay off bonds for FedExForum and the existing and recently expanded Cook Convention Center. Anything left over will go to the Bass Pro Pyramid if that project moves forward. The developers of the Mid-South Fairgrounds and Graceland and Elvis Presley Boulevard are also relying on Tourism Development Zone tax rebates. Not only is the mythical tourism-and-convention jackpot stretched thin, it is also shrinking. In a meeting with seven members of the Memphis City Council earlier this summer, Beale Street merchants said their business was off 10 to 15 percent. From the vantage point of a tourist, Beale Street delivers a variety of live music. While FedExForum and AutoZone Park are dark more nights than not and Peabody Place is emptying out, Beale Street is open every night and cleaned up every morning. It has safety and image issues, but what bar-hopping area doesn't? However a change is coming. As one operator said this week, "I just hope it's not worse." (News, Source;EIN/Memphisflyer)

In a ceremony Friday that featured three of his old pals, the Las Vegas Walk of Stars honored The King with a celebrity star that will go in front of the Riviera near those of fellow icons Liberace and Sammy Davis Jr. "Elvis has come home to stay," Elvis fan club president Sue Laurenz told a cheering crowd. Her group, the Viva Las Vegas Club, raised most of the $15,000 needed for the star, the 27th to go on The Strip. With that mission accomplished, the next step should be getting a street named after Elvis, said Joe Esposito, one of the three members of Elvis' Memphis Mafia who attended the ceremony in the Riviera's Le Bistro Lounge. "I don't understand why there isn't a street named after Elvis," said Esposito, Elvis' road manager and best man at Presley's wedding to Priscilla. That brought down the house, too. It's become a sore point to Elvis fans, after seeing a half dozen other entertainers get streets named in their honor. Elvis, said Riviera president Bob Vannucci, didn't just fill the showroom, "he filled the city." Also attending was Sammy Shore, Elvis' opening act for years during his long run at The International (now the Las Vegas Hilton), and Sonny West, Presley's bodyguard and close friend, and Pete "Big Elvis" Valle, who played a big part in getting Elvis his star. October 1, 200816 yr Author Las Vegas Project In Trouble New York billionaire Robert FX Sillerman is backing away from an ambitious Elvis-themed resort across the $9-plus billion City Center. Sillerman, in a Security Exchange Commission filing on Monday, indicated it is "unlikely" that his orginal Las Vegas plan will proceed. "As a result of the dislocation and turbulence in the capital markets," the filing said,"the Company is reviewing its originally proposed program for the redevelopment of its Las Vegas properties. "While no definitive determination has been made by the Company, it is unlikely that the program originally proposed will be undertaken. The Company intends to continue the propertiesʼ commercial leasing activities pending any such definitive determination." When he announced his Elvis plans for Las Vegas 2 1/2 years ago, Sillerman indicated it would involve an interactive museum and Elvis theme show on the site, which stretches from the Harley-Davidson Cafe to Smith & Wollensky steak house along Las Vegas Boulevard. Sillerman paid $100 million to the Presley family in 2005 for control of Elvis' name and likeness, but not his music. There have been hints that Sillerman also planned an Elvis hotel on The Strip, but that may be a case of "Heartbreak Hotel." City Center will feature a Cirque du Soleil Elvis show. October 15, 200816 yr Author Municipal Auditorium is a national historic landmark :cheer: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/municipal.jpg The U.S. Interior Department has announced that Shreveport's Municipal Auditorium has been declared a national historic landmark in the US. It is one of 16 locations to become national landmarks this year for it's importance in American history and culture. The auditorium is city owned. It was built in the 1920's with an art deco design. It was dedicated to the World War I veterans. It is most famously known as the site of the Louisiana Hayride hosted by local radio station, KWKH from 1948 to 1958. It was noted as country music's most innovative radio show. "It's a wonderful designation that, hopefully, will allow us to go out and find grant money and other additional funding to do the things we need to do to make that a functional place," said Shreveport Councilman Michael Long, a musician who is active with The Foundation for Arts, Music and Entertainment of Shreveport-Bossier. As we all know, Elvis played the Hayride while he was becoming a rising star. Pictured above is tourists visiting the auditorium today. It now hosts all kinds of events. It is nice to see an Elvis related site not being torn down as many have been. The Hayride is a very important piece of not only Elvis history but music history. And it is wonderful generations of music fans will be able to visit the auditorium where so much great music was played and heard in a very important period of music history, the begining of Rock and Roll.
