FTD to release Standing Room Only as 2LP set:

On March 23 FTD will be releasing a 2CD version of STANDING ROOM ONLY. As you know the album was never officially released and it's possible that the version we create was never meant to be, but it's the best way we can present the Las Vegas masters from February of 1972 and the masters and outtakes from the March 1972 sessions at RCA.

STANDING ROOM ONLY vinyl will be scheduled for release with the FTD April title (TBA). Cat #: 8869748444-2

I Just Can't Help Believin'

The CD was announced late last year, but now we received more information on the upcoming Straight Arrow release of the opening night of Elvis' last Vegas gig on December 2, 1976:

The Press release

I JUST CAN'T HELP BELIEVIN' / THE LAST OPENING NIGHT

As recorded at the Hilton Hotel showroom in Las Vegas, Nevada, December 2nd, 1976, Opening show.

Straight Arrow label announced its 12th release near the end of December; a double CD with the famous December 2nd, 1976 Opening Night. Some fans are asking, “Why is this release delayed and will it ever see the daylight?”. The answer is very simple: Straight Arrow is here to give you the best possible quality. We originally intended to use a 1978 first generation copy for this release, simply because we figured that the original tape was no longer around or could no longer be traced. But then, as the project was almost near completion, our search for the original tape finally paid off, and we got in touch with the person who recorded the concert and owns the original 120-minute mastertape. The sound fidelity and overall quality of this tape is FAR superior to any copy in circulation, and unlike these copies is also 100% complete!

The negotiations took some time, but we came to an agreement, and the Straight Arrow team is now working its magic on the original tape. We can assure you that you will be impressed when you hear this; one of the King’s finest ’76 concerts in a remarkably clear and dynamic sound. The person who recorded the show also wrote the liner notes, a unique eye-witness perspective from a person who was THERE and describes the show in fascinating detail.

Excerpts from the sleeve notes:

"There was a surprise then, as Elvis decided to sing "I Just Can't Help Believin'", creating pure magic and getting well-deserved applause. The mood changed completely: "Fever" was as sexy as ever, as Elvis, did exaggerated leg movements in the red spotlight. Charlie brought out a blue chair, but Elvis refused it, and began to tell the poignant story that led into "Softly As I Leave You". A pulsating intro could only mean one thing - "Polk Salad Annie". Elvis moved to the funky new arrangement and the heavy rock beat, raising excitement levels in the showroom."

"The show - probably the second longest of Elvis's career - was drawing to a close. Elvis treated the audience to a fine "Bridge Over Troubled Water", introduced his father, thanked the crowd "for making this opening night really fantastic", and, ignoring requests for yet more songs, began "Can't Help Falling In Love". The-usual scarf-and-kiss routine drew many fans to the edge of the stage. Two tiny girls in blue dresses were put up onto the stage. Elvis acknowledged the crowd's ovation before disappearing under the descending gold curtain. He'd never be quite as dynamic again during the 12-day season, but it had been an opening night to remember - over 100 Magic Minutes."

Elvis In The Beatles Building :yahoo:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/beatlesshirt.jpg

A little bit of musical history will come to the Beatles Story on February 27th, with the arrival in Liverpool of a rare piece of Elvis memorabilia.

Worn by the King throughout the late '50s and loaned exclusively by Elvis Presley Enterprises in Memphis, Elvis's personally branded fashion sweater will be on show in the Beatles Story's exhibition to symbolise the huge influence Elvis had on the Beatles and their music. The sweater, estimated to be worth around £10,000, was made by the Corsicar label in California and is a typical example of Elvis' personal brand.

His initials began appearing on his clothes in the late '50s and continued to adorn shirts, jackets, jewelry and even sunglasses well into the '70s.

Elvis was a major influence on the Beatles and on John Lennon in particular. John once said, "Nothing really affected me until I heard Elvis. Before Elvis there was nothing."

When John and Paul's pre Beatles group, the Quarry Men formed they began to introduce Elvis numbers into their repertoire, performed by either John or Paul, which included 'All Shook Up', 'Blue Moon Of Kentucky', 'Hound Dog', 'Jailhouse Rock', 'Mean Woman Blues', 'I Forgot To Remember To Forget', 'I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry Over You', 'It's Now Or Never', 'That's All Right (Mama)' and 'Love Me Tender'.

George Harrison was to comment, "I remember at school there was all that thing about Elvis. When a record came along like 'Heartbreak Hotel' it was so amazing.

"We know Elvis is great. Seeing Elvis was like seeing the messiah arrive."

Paul McCartney was to say, "Every time I felt low, I just put on an Elvis record and I'd feel great, beautiful".

Elvis went on to record several Beatles compositions, including 'Hey Jude', 'Yesterday' and 'Something'. Jerry Goldman, Managing Director of the Beatles Story said: "It's wonderful to link up with Elvis Enterprises to bring this stunning piece of memorabilia to Liverpool.

Elvis and the Beatles are the greatest artists in popular music history so it is especially apt that we bring the two great music cities of Liverpool and Memphis together."

The arrival of this wonderful and evocative piece of memorabilia marks the start of an exciting year for the Beatles Story with the opening of the new development at the Pier Head Ferry Terminal and more exciting announcements to follow.

Exciting news: the screen show returns! :yahoo:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/elvis1959/Etheshow.jpg

Several fans and members have contacted us and asked us if "the rumours" were true: is the Big Screen Show returning to Europe? We prefered to wait until the official announcement, but apparently the news has leaked out on several messageboards, websites and blogs, so why deny it? Yes indeed - the screen shows will be back. But we'll leave it up to EPE to officially announce the next Tour, including the cities and dates.

I just read it will be Spring 2010 :cheer:

"Elvis Presley In Concert - The New Tour" is now officially confirmed for Spring 2010. It's nothing less than a small miracle that the show will tour again. After all, it was Priscilla herself who announced the 'very last screen show' at the Fed Ex Forum in Memphis, on August 16th 2007.

John Carpenter and Kurt Russell's Elvis the Movie -- Where's the DVD?:

In 1979, two years after the tragic, untimely death of the King of Rock and Roll, Dick Clark sanctioned a 3-hour TV biopic, entitled simply, Elvis. Director John Carpenter, a lifelong Elvis fan, red hot after the success of Halloween, was hired to helm the film. After lengthy auditions, Kurt Russell was cast as Presley and it would be this film that cemented his transition from juvenile Disney fare to more adult roles. Carpenter and Russell, would, of course, go on to make many more films together, including Escape From New York and The Thing.

When it was originally broadcast, it was one of the highest rated TV movies ever, even outdrawing Gone With the Wind, shown opposite its premiere. While a two-hour edited version was released on VHS in the early 90's, it has since gone into moratorium. So ... where's the DVD?

Given the pedigree of not only its subject matter, but its now famous makers, it seems a no-brainer to release this on disc. Especially since the Elvis mini-series from a few years ago, starring Jonathan Rhys-Myers could not hold a candle to the Carpenter-Russell collaboration. This despite the fact that the Elvis Presley Estate offered the use of Elvis' music. The 1979 version used country singer Ronnie McDowell to sing the songs, eerily dead-on.

After contacting Dick Clark Productions waaaay back in 2003 regarding a DVD release, I was told plans were underway, but that some of the music was held up in copyright redtape (specifically the Bill Monroe estate, over the rights to Blue Moon of Kentucky, prominently featured in a major set piece). In 2007 a DVD release date was announced, only to be pulled at the last minute, with no further info. Fans have created an online petition to get this movie back on store shelves, and I encourage those interested to sign it.

Ranking among the best biopics ever produced (Ray, Walk the Line, Coal Miner's Daughter), Elvis is the quintessential telling of one of music's most influential performers and a shining note for two of cinema's classic collaborators.

To converts and newbies, I say deluge Dick Clark Productions with mail and calls, and let them know there is a audience for this remarkable, nearly forgotten, film. Remind them that this year (2009) marks its 30th anniversary -- a perfect way to market this biopic. Remind them that since Elvis makes more income to this day than he ever did while alive, there IS a vast demographic who would lay down money for it. Tell them to pay the Bill Monroe estate whatever they want for that music, and get on with releasing this already. Also tell them that a documentary and a commentary track by John and Kurt would be welcome (they've already expressed interest in doing this).

Elvis' Ladies Asked For Nude Calendar :o

Actress and former 1960s sex symbol Barbara Whatley, 70, said to the UK Daily Mail newspaper that has been invited by an American entrepreneur to pose naked for a calendar of women involved with Elvis Presley, who asked her to marry him in 1966 after they'd canoodled in Malibu.

Presumably Presley's ex-wife, Priscilla, will be approached, as will Elvis playmates such as actresses Ann-Margret, 67, and Cybill 'See her sing - hear her dance!' Shepherd, 59, the latter claiming 'the King' kissed her naked body. Not to forget British starlet Suzanna Leigh, 63, who said poetically after a session with Presley: 'A person could go to the gallows with such a kiss lingering on their lips.'

Opening Dates Cirque Du Soleil Elvis Show

The opening show on should take place on December 16th. 2009 and is by invitation only. The official public premiere should now be on what would have been Elvis' 75th birthday; January 8th. 2010. The shows running up to that will be trial shows.

From the Aria resort website:

The king of rock 'n' roll will soon be back in the building in Las Vegas when ARIA presents a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The creative geniuses at Cirque du Soleil have created a new show exclusively for ARIA. The production pays tribute to Elvis' music and life, fusing dance and acrobatics, live music and iconic tracks, nostalgia and modernity, high technology and raw emotion. In short, the show will be in Elvis' image: powerful, sexy, whimsical and truly unique.

From Elvis In Memphis Re-issue - Update

In January & February 1969, Elvis entered the 'American Sound Studios' in Memphis and went

on to record some of his greatest work. Sony Music will release a deluxe version of "From Elvis In Memphis" to commemorate the anniversary of these recordings. This re-issue will include all 32 masters recorded at these sessions. The recordings have been remastered from the original album masters for optimum sound quality.

Ernst Jorensen said to Elvis Unlimited that the idea for this re-issue is a deluxe boxset type with a nice booklet and maybe even a DVD. This release will not be released on the Follow That Dream collector's label but globally on the SONY / BMG label.

Update May 21, 2009:

EPE posted the following update on their site:

To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Elvis' historic American Studio session that resulted in "Suspicious Minds," "In the Ghetto" and "Kentucky Rain" among many others, Sony Music will release a deluxe version of From Elvis In Memphis, including all the 32 masters recorded at these sessions. These recordings have been remastered from the original album masters for optimum sound quality. More details on the release to come.

In honor of the anniversary and release, The Memphis Boys, who played with Elvis on the historic session, and joined by Ernst Jorgensen, will be on stage at Conversation on Elvis to share their memories of what went on during this amazing session.

The Memphis Boys, Bobby Emmons, Bobby Wood, Gene Chrisman, Mike Leech and Reggie Young, are a rhythm section whose professional careers began in and around Memphis in the early sixties. They played on more hit recordings at that time during a six month period than any other studio rhythm section in history, according to Billboard Magazine. They also played on Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," Willie Nelson's "Always on My Mind," B.J. Thomas' "Hooked on a Feeling," Herbie Mannand's "Memphis Underground" and Billy Swan's "I Can Help." For complete bios on all The Memphis Boys, visit their site.

Producer and catalog expert Ernst Jorgensen has been instrumental in the revival of Elvis Presley’s body of recordings for more than a decade; the box sets he co-produced for RCA, including The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, From Nashville to Memphis, Walk a Mile in My Shoes, and Platinum: A Life in Music, have been nominated for Grammy Awards and have sold well over a million copies. He is also author of the definitive account of Elvis’ recording sessions, Elvis Presley: A Life in Music. Ernst is instrumental in the development of each release on the Follow That Dream label.

From Elvis in Memphis is the thirty-fourth album, not counting budget compilations on the RCA Camden subsidiary, by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Records, LSP 4155, in June 1969. Recorded at American Sound Studios in Memphis, it peaked at #13 on the Billboard 200, and is considered by many critics to be his best album. In 2003, the album was ranked number 190 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Many of the songs recorded at American by Presley derived from the country and western repertoire, such as the 1962 hit "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'" by Johnny Tillotson, Hank Snow's #1 country smash in 1950, "I'm Movin' On," and Eddy Arnold's 1947 chestnut, "I'll Hold You In My Heart." Even the more modern, late sixties country approach in "Gentle On My Mind" found a place. By including these songs, along with contemporary soul such as Jerry Butler's recent "Only the Strong Survive," like Ray Charles earlier in the decade with Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Presley reinforced the musical links between country and rhythm and blues.

Chuck Jackson had sung the original Top 40 version of "Any Day Now" by Burt Bacharach in 1962, and future country singer and 1970s television star Mac Davis provided "In the Ghetto," Presley's stab at a message or protest song aligned with the times. Released as the lead single on April 14, two months before the album hit the stores, it went to #3 on the singles chart, and provided another break with his public image as cultivated by the escapist fare of his sixties film career.

The reissue of May 16, 2000, includes six tracks released as either A or b sides recorded at the same sessions for the album. "Don't Cry Daddy," also by Davis, and "Kentucky Rain" were both sizeable hits in 1970, but "Suspicious Minds" became one of Presley's signature tunes, and gave him the final chart-topper of his career as the decade came to a close.
