Posted August 3, 200816 yr BRITAIN will be suffering a rolling programme of power blackouts within the next seven years a senior energy expert warned last night. His stark prophesy predicts the country will be plunged back to the dark days of the Seventies, when electricity was rationed and hospital staff had to carry out work by candlelight. Professor Ian Fells, one of Britain’s foremost authorities on energy, said: “I have been in direct contact with energy companies and they are quite blunt about this. We will have rolling blackouts within 10 years, probably by 2015. “This is not scaremongering. These companies are desperately worried and have few options.” His warning came as the nation’s energy crisis teeters towards catastrophe following the last-minute collapse of a £12bn bid for nuclear generator British Energy by French company EDF. Source: Sunday Express Do you think the UK will face blackouts within 10 years? What can be done to prevent it happening?
August 3, 200816 yr Yes. Whilst Britain maintains its pathetic King Canute denial attitude towards adopting Nuclear energy then this will be the consequence.
August 4, 200816 yr Do you think the UK will face blackouts within 10 years? What can be done to prevent it happening? It's frankly inevitable, the energy crisis (not to mention related environmental issues such as pollution and over-population..) is a HUGE deal... People are criticising the Spanish for adopting strict measures, but it seems to me that they're the only ones who are actually doing something to deal with the energy problem...
August 4, 200816 yr No, we won't have blackouts in this modern age. I'd be very surprised. It's all more scare-mongering.
August 4, 200816 yr No, we won't have blackouts in this modern age. I'd be very surprised. It's all more scare-mongering. Chris, you are seriously underestimating the problem.... Natural Oil and Gas reserves are becoming ever more depleted, and the nuclear energy deal falling through has pretty serious ramifications.... But go ahead, keep burying your head in the sand, it'll only be your kids and future generations who'll end up inheriting the worst of this problem.... -_-
August 5, 200816 yr Yep, it will most likely happen. I've switched to a laptop from a desktop simply for the guard of having a battery backup.
August 7, 200816 yr According to a report I read, leading scientists say we only have about 100 months left to actually start to DO something about climate change, the energy crisis, etc..... We are reaching the POINT OF NO RETURN here......
August 7, 200816 yr ^^ All of which will mean absolutely nothing to most. As long as there's a profit to be made from destroying the planet, Earth is f***ed  Rather ironically, I think pretty much the only way to save the planet would be to nuke the West...
August 7, 200816 yr Rather ironically, I think pretty much the only way to save the planet would be to nuke the West...   You kinda miss the point that China is probably one of the Top 3 Polluters at the moment though.....
August 8, 200816 yr    You kinda miss the point that China is probably one of the Top 3 Polluters at the moment though..... They at least have the (still rather dodgy nonetheless) excuse of having one and a half billion people! What excuse do America or the UK have? -_-
October 10, 201311 yr Well this has reared it's ugly head again: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24433778 In other news, SSE have announced price rises of 8.2% starting from 15 November (when it typically starts to get colder!): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24465979
