Will Young to play Olympic party

Will Young, James Morrison and Scouting for Girls have signed up for London's Olympic Handover party.

The Feeling and McFly will also perform at the concert which is being held on The Mall - the well-known stretch of road leading to Buckingham Palace.

The gig, which marks the moment London becomes the official Olympic city, takes place at the same time as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Closing Ceremony.

London Mayor Boris Johnson will be symbolically handed the Olympic flag.

Sporting theme

"Being involved with the Olympic Handover celebrations, and playing in front of Buckingham Palace to thousands of people is going to be amazing," said singer-songwriter Morrison.

This will truly be one of the most memorable events that we have ever performed at

Scouting for Girls

"It's one of those once in a life time opportunities and I am very excited."

Tickets for the concert on 24 August have already been allocated to 40,000 people via a ballot.

Anyone who was not fortunate enough to get one can tune in to the live broadcast on BBC One and BBC Radio 2.

The show will feature unique collaborations and specially-arranged performances, some with a sporting theme.

In a statement Scouting for Girls said: "This will truly be one of the most memorable events that we have ever performed at and we are so happy to be involved. "Our nation should feel very proud to be the next host city for the Olympic and Paralympic Games."

What ballot - I've never seen one. Humph.

Apart from that, great news. :yahoo: Will duetting with James Brown at the last Olympic Torch gig I will never forget. A great pity it will never be repeated. :(

Thanks TT.

You had to apply for tickets a few months ago. I think some of the girls on D applied for tickets.....just in case :P

I agree about James - Will was so fortunate to sing with him - and he did it twice - much to the chagrin of other singers (Beverley K step forward) who was eating her heart out.

Olympic flame relights UK's musical fire

By Robert Ashton

Music is taking centre stage at the Olympics this summer with a raft of artists, including James Morrison, Will Young and Scouting for Girls lined up to celebrate the handover of the games to London later this month.

The move comes as the Department for Culture, Media and Sport confirms the UK Government and the music industry are beginning to work towards planning

for the 2012 Olympics, assessing the role of music at the London Games and the legacy the event can leave in terms of possible venues on or around the Stratford site and launching acts onto the global stage.

With the opening ceremony kickstarting the Olympics in China last Friday, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) and the BBC are hosting a concert in The Mall on August 24 to mark the handover of the Olympic flame from Beijing to London.

It is expected a crowd of 40,000 will gather outside Buckingham Palace to watch Morrison, Young, Scouting for Girls, The Feeling, Il Divo, Katherine Jenkins and McFly.

Thanks Sunday. Re the tickets - It doesn't seem any of our peeps got tickets - other than Lemonade(I think it was) on O/S who won hers in a competition.

Capital radio and others, including the press have hundreds of tickets to win in competitions etc, so I'm sure

there'll be a couple more of us who'll get lucky. :D

Thanks sunday.

Thanks for the Radio Times write up chrysalis. Love that they've used a recent pic.

Seems the cover he's singing is I can see clearly now. Unless it's just Will's zany sense of humour.

Will Facing a Career Crisis

Will Young has put his acting career on hold for the sake of his music. The original Pop Idol wishes the UK was more like the States and encouraged its music stars to embrace acting as well as singing.

Speaking to me backstage at the V Festival, Will said, "I love acting and would love to do more projects but I think it confused people a bit. Its tougher for people to crossover here than it is in America".

Will acted alongside Dame Judi Dench 73, in the film Mrs Hendersen Presents and performed the lead role in Noel Coward play The Vortex.

He added, " I was really encouraged after doing the play as well because I got some good reviews from theatre critics who are known for being quite harsh".

Now the 29 year old, is focusing all his attention on his fourth album Let It Go, out on September 29th. He explained, "I've never been so excited about a record, Im having the best time ever".

The singer is also gearing up to perform at the Olympic Handover concert at the Mall in London on August 24th.

He revealed, "I think I might be singing I Can See Clearly Now. The last time I did an Olympics collaboration was with James Brown (in 2004)".

Thanks to Ruthie.
