The King of Rock 'n' Roll is bringing out a new album later this year - despite being dead for over 30 years.

New technology will be used to produce Elvis Presley Christmas Duets, featuring country stars LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood, among others.

The late singer's ex-wife Priscilla said: "I am sure Elvis would be proud to have worked with them."

Presley's 1957 Elvis Christmas album became the top-selling holiday release of all time in the US.

The new album will also feature Martina McBride, Gretchen Wilson, Wynonna Judd, Sara Evans, Amy Grant and Anne Murray.

Gospel quartet, The Jordanaires, who used to work with Presley have been brought back to re-record their parts.

"It's amazing what they can do," the group's Gordon Stoker said, "Elvis sounds great. The recordings sound as if they were done yesterday."

Tracks on the album include Blue Christmas, Here Comes Santa Claus, Merry Christmas Baby, White Christmas and I'll Be Home for Christmas.

Sony BMG is releasing the disc in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc.

Their President, John Ingrassia, said: "This is an excellent example of the innovative ways in which we keep Elvis' catalogue fresh for new and existing fans."

Jean Donovan, from New Hampshire, who writes a Presley newsletter for fans, said she would not judge the songs without hearing them first.

But she added: "I don't really like fooling around with things like that. All the Elvis recordings are so good. It kind of bothers me."

Elvis Presley Christmas Duets is due out 14 October.

Cheers Chris  Good to see the news has reached the BBC. Apparently Sony BMG are having separate releases for the States, UK and Australia with different artists 'dueting' with Elvis. One to look out for

More publicity for 'Elvis Christmas Duets':

Country queen Martina McBride has gone into the studio with the King of Rock 'n' Roll, to record Elvis' famous yuletide tune, "Blue Christmas," as a duet with him. Well, it didn't exactly happen that way. McBride, sang her part of the duet several decades after the late Presley did his part in the studio. But that's the brilliance of modern musical technology, which can insert McBride's powerful voice into the track, as if she were there with Elvis.

The result, "Elvis Presley Christmas Duets," will be released Oct. 14, and includes several duets sung by Elvis and contemporary country artists, including Sara Evans, Gretchen Wilson, LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood. McBride says her father played "Blue Christmas" every year when she was growing up, and it's a favorite holiday song of hers.

People will love the album because "it's Elvis, first of all," McBride says. "I just think it's neat to hear other people singing with him, his classic ... songs," McBride says. "It's just an interesting idea."

The Christmas album, though, comes as a brief punctuation between "Waking Up Laughing," McBride's current successful album and the title of her tour, and her next album, which will be released in the spring.

And saw this posted over on FECC

Carrie Underwood, who performs Tuesday night at the Kansas Expocentre, used the word "surreal" several times to describe her experience of recording a duet with Elvis Presley.

Underwood said she was asked by Presley's widow to participate in "Elvis Presley Christmas Duets," due Oct. 14 from Sony BMG Music Entertainment.

"Priscilla asked if I would be part of it, so you've kind of got to after that, right?" the "American Idol" Season 4 winner said by telephone.

Underwood and some of country music's other biggest female stars, including Gretchen Wilson, LeAnn Rimes, Wynonna Judd and Sara Evans, did their recording sessions in the fabled RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tenn., the same studio where Presley recorded.

Using technology to isolate Presley's vocal track of "I'll Be Home for Christmas," it was played back for Underwood in the recording session.

"He would sing, then I would sing, and I would harmonize with him. It was very surreal," Underwood said.

Asked about her reaction when she heard the melded voices played back, Underwood responded: 'It was very surreal. I mean people don't do duets with Elvis. It was very weird in a great way, wonderfully surreal."

The CD will be the first Presley duet recordings album and the first Christmas compilation of its kind ever produced.

Presley, who performed a concert in Topeka's Municipal Auditorium on May 21, 1956, less than four months before his breakthrough appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," recorded 20 Christmas songs. His various holiday albums have sold more than 25 million copies in the United States alone and year after year appear on the holiday album sales charts.

The opening track of "Elvis Presley Christmas Duets" features the King singing his signature holiday tune, "Blue Christmas," with Kansas-born country superstar Martina McBride.

Track 8 is "O Little Town of Bethlehem" with Presley's voice merged with those of Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman, of Little Big Town, which will open the show Tuesday in Landon Arena.
