Just wanted to know/see some of the thoughts on Mark E. Smith, vocalist/song-writer/only continuous member of The Fall.

To me, he is probably one of the best song-writers ever, his idiosyncratic lyrics are astounding in places and some of the albums he has written (This Nation's Saving Grace, Hex Enduction Hour, Slates) are all brilliant and are up there in my top ever albums. Even though I mainly enjoy modern music, usually "indie" I have the utmost respect for The Fall, and unlike some bands, the new stuff isn't actually that bad  Even though the alcohol/drugs has made his face look about 100 years old.

Any thoughts? I put it here because I thought it would be wasted in "Indie/Rock/Alternative"

I don't think he'd be half as famous as he is without John Peel's support over the years but there's no denying The Fall have made some great music over the years. I especially love 'Hit the North' but who doesn't?

Saw them live a year ago up in Aberdeen - I think they played about 15 songs in an hour with barely a pause between them!

The Fall are a great Indie band (in fact, shouldn't this thread actually be discussed there....?), one of the legendary Manchester bands, and Mark E Smith is one of the great characters of British music.. Yeah, it pretty much was Peelie who drew my attention to them (as he did with SO many others that I cant even count..), but that was his job, to spread the word about great music....

...but i guess a scenester wouldnt be seen dead with a record by the fall   ...and i guess he fit into singer-songwriter and this area does have Bjork threads....

I've actually just bought some fall albums the other day to try (they are all the sanctuary 2 x cd stock going cheap now - oh mr. universal catalogue marketing man you are spoiling us...) - liked that article about the bloke who tried to locate all the 40+ ex-members of the fall from a few years ago - should have made that into a movie...maybe wouldnt have been as good as man on wire or dig! but i guess it would be better than giving cinema space to the love guru

actually was thinking the other day as i was listening to the album (Middle Class Revolt) could he actually been seen as a Mancunian Dylan (tho i guess this should pedanticly be a Salfordian Bob Dylian but i dont actually know what people are called from Salford)...tho maybe a Mancunian Fred Schneider might be nearer the truth...makes you wish for a Mark E Smith cover of Rock Lob-stah

 the fall - free rang-ah

The Fall - Victori-ah

The Inspiral Cah-pets - I Want You

Tigerboy - you've struck gold there.

I'd love to hear The Fall cover Rock Lobster.

I hate his voice...

btw maybe it shouldnt be the indie area that has this thread (tho it would be nice to have it back in specialist as since all the singer-songwriter threads were moved to thread - there's f*** all there ) maybe it should go to retro as i'm sure everyone would be more apreciative of the fall there than this area....

with reference to scenester wankfest Vice Magazine and page 182 of The Vice Guide to Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll - well if it not on that page its the feature about all the cult bands that everyone goes on about but no-one listens to them as they are really gay (not pet shop boys gay obv)...and along with people like Pere Ubu.. the general opinion is that they suck big time...but not as bad as Talking Heads (tho on the other hand Duran Duran were given a glowing report so obv the article muct have been writen by Courtney Taylor-Taylor-Me-Me-Me-Duffy from the Dandy-Dandy Warhols.... )
