Uninsured drivers are killing four people a week – yet the penalties are getting softer.

Figures have revealed that 208 people died in accidents caused by uninsured drivers in 2006, compared with 160 in 2000 – a rise of almost a third.

Yet the average fine for driving without insurance has dropped by 17 per cent from £224 in 1997 to just £185 now.

This is less than the average fine imposed for smoking in a smoke-free place, £200.

And it is a fraction of the £1,000 fine for not having a TV licence.

The figures come just weeks after it was revealed that judges have been told in official court guidance to let off killer drivers with no insurance.

Amy Aeron-Thomas, executive director of the road crash victims’ charity RoadPeace said: “More needs to be done to catch and keep these criminals off the road before they kill or injure innocent people."

So, what do you think...should all uninsured drivers be jailed?

No, jails are overcrowded already - the punishment should fit the crime. But yes, stick the fines back up again.

That's a joke right.... If they cant afford insurance, then they cant afford fines either... They'll claim poverty (because, let's face it most of these parasites are sponging on benefits anyway....) and make a deal where they're just paying back about a fiver a week... And most of these insurance dodgers are persistant offenders who do it multiple times because they think the law cant really meaningfully touch them, all things considered they're not exactly wrong to think that, we're way too soft on them....

Nope, sorry, the ONLY deterrant is jail-time, and if that means we have to build more prisons, then make it so... Rob is right these fukkers are a menace, time to make examples of the more persistant offenders, driving bans for life, 10 years in prison. No exceptions.... Three strikes and you're out of the driving game.....

GAWD, isn't that actually LESS than what it costs to actually insure the average family motor for a fukkin' year???????

CRAZY!!!!! It's actually worth taking the gamble in that case innit....? Yet again, law-abiding people are stung for doing the right thing by paying out outrageous insurance premiums..... <_<

Stick them in jail, if you can't afford insurance then f***ing walk. It is ridiculous to have to pay for damages done to your car because the person who caused the accident doesn't have insurance, make that person pay for it anyways out of their own pocket!
As well as being jailed their cars should be seized and either sold or crushed and their possessions should be seized to the value of 2 or 3 times the cost of what would normally be the insurance cost on that car
