The Saturdays - 'Up' 'Chasing Lights' [13.10.08] [27.10.08]

Featured Replies

actually ... im not so sure now that their chart life will be short. not because they are that good, they clearly arnt, but with the main rivals the sugababes releasing such rubbish (girls) and girls aloud must be nearing the end of their chart career.. 6 years is a respectable career for a manufactured act ... surely they cant go on much longer... then the saturdays might just be in the right place at the right time and fill a void that the 'big 2' might leave.

Well you base those assumptions more on personal opinion than fact. 'Girls' is continuing to sell strongly with a top 3 position looking likely this week. It evidently has found some fanbase out there and what I've heard on the album is MUCH better. There's plenty of contemporary songs for them to work with for the rest of the project. As for Girls Aloud, 'The Promise' has already recieved huge support across the board. It could potentionally be their biggest single in a long time. They're as big now as they were when they began I'd say.

So I see no logic as to how The Saturdays would be left on their lonesome as Britain's sole girlgroup? :S

imo, The Saturday's don't work because they're just overall pretty boring. 'Up' is a good pop song, but look at them. They all look and sound like clones of eachother. Girls Aloud + Sugababes work as girl groups because each member has an 'individual' sound and style to them. The Saturday's don't have this (from what I can see/+ hear anyway).
Polydor have spent a f***-load on them.

The rumored amount was £400k.

'If This Is Love' sold over 50k, so thats over £150k recouporated. 'Up' should sell at least 80k so thats 240k made and the album should at least sell (and i have no doubt will sell more) 80/90k this year - so thats £900k.

All in all by the end of this year Polydor/Fascination wont of only recouporated the £400k but made a profit of £890,000.

I think as well it's a matter of personality first of all. I'm not saying they're all the same, they come as pretty and sophisticated young ladies already, people can't connect with them.

When the Sugababes began, they were teenagers, so people could watch them grow and get attracted to their personalities. Girls Aloud started on PSTR, so obvioulsy people could know them individually, and people have seen them grow from trash-ish teenagers (look at them clothes at that time  ) to very glamourous women. They've been kind of a progression, and not only in terms of music.

Both SB and GA didn't start like perfect women all glamourous and irresitible. The thing is that both SB and GA were kind of "normal" people with their personalities and their weaknesses.

And I think that's the problem with The Saturdays, they only start in music industry but they already try to play the "perfect/sophisticated" card, people won't find any interest in them. And the music is not good enough to make them successful on its own.

Im just hoping top 10 for the single and album. I think with the promo cranking up this week (and i hope more dates added around the time of the album), it will help get the exposure they need.

shhh you arnt allowed to not like the saturdays on this thread ...

I sort of agree with Bertie. I don't think image matters that greatly but certainly there's interest in the individual Sugababes because each is so different, and the same with GA. Whether the individual Saturday girls could find fans outside of pant-wetting internet loons remains to be seen...

Also though, your figures are so hugely distorted that it's laughable Matt! If This Is Love did sell 50k but 40k will have been from downloads, of which probably 40p is profit - so that's about £12,000 recouped, £15k being generous. The 10k-odd of CD singles sold will have made about a £1 profit each (again being generous) after manufacture costs and retails margins - so that's £10k, giving £25k made in total - nowhere near £150k LOL.

As for Up, it's not on course to sell 80k - it's on course to be a flop, when you look at TV play and particularly airplay at radio. I love the song and am not trying to belittle it but things are looking quite terrible for it right now. If This Is Love at least had a pre-release buzz which Up plainly lacks, sadly. So it might make another £20-25k at a push, if it can match ITIL's relative success, which I doubt.

If the album sells 100k this year (again, big projections given how the lead single did and how Up is headed), that might be £300-400k for the label minus manufacture costs and retail margins. So perhaps they'll make a maximum total profit of £450k?

What I'm saying is if they're to avoid droppage, they'll need either to make some money by embarking on a small-scale tour (Apollos around the country) or to have a label boss who happens to love them, which is how Sophie Ellis-Bextor has survived so long on Fascination. I'm quite willing to bet the label boss does in fact love them and will keep them safe. We'll see.

crazy frog sold loads and topped the chart as did bob the bloody builder... that didnt make them 'good'. so 'girls' might well sell well but it is far from being anywhere near there best material.... however... i do take your point about the album, i have not heard that so i cant comment.

my 'assumptions' are based on fact, the facts are that both sb and ga have had a very long chart run over the last 6/8 years. my point being that MAYBE they are getting tired, and as some are married now might be looking to start a family, or turn their career in a different direction. both groups have had a long chart career by anybodies standard and sooner or later they may well 'take a break' or even quit. as i see it that would be the best case scenario for the saturdays because imho i dont think the saturdays are yet strong enough to take on 2 very popular and long term acts. without ga/sb the sats could well pick up residual fans of girl groups.

I think ''Up'' will suprise us all and go Top10.

I don't hold high hopes for the album though.

i think most here expect 'up' to go top ten... not a surprise there :)

I can see them flopping with 'Up' to be honest even though I'd put it at number 1 if I had my own way

Fair point perhaps, but Sugababes aren't going anywhere. After this album they'll be having a short rest (two months off) and then recording for their 7th album, due August 2010. I can't comment about GA though.

Well we all know GA arent going anywhere soon either, Sarah has commented on them having at least another two albums after 'Out Of Control' (so it must be a possible clause in their contract) and in the book Nadine says they will 'never split' just go for a break to pursue other things. Basically GA arent going anywhere either!

Jark, im thinking that would the 400k be paying for the manufacturing costs?! I think im correct in thinking they would and therefore that would make my estimates almost correct (looking at them again, i do agree they could be a bit higher than fact).

well it would help the saturdays IF these long running, established girl groups did take a rest and /or pack up. they have both run longer then the spice girls and all saints , one wonders just how much mileage there is left in them, (not that i mind, i like ga..) but they wont go on forever.

who?...

gawd id sooner have even the saturdays over them, i hate the '$l*t' look any female artiste employs in order to shift units.

...just a footnote to put them into perspective...

the supremes had a 10 year chart career, bananarama 11, the two most successful female groups of all time. so the sugababes with 8 years and counting, ga with 6, MAYBE have not that much life in them.

Its funmny how the dolls complain about people calling them @Strippers@ or even prostitutes which is harsh

but the way they dresses its hard for people to take them seriously......maybe they should sack their stylist???

I still wonder though when are the saturdays going to crack america??

bananarama & spice girls succeded, maybe they can too, i can see @Up@ becom a hit in the usa.

Up isnt really doing as well as i'd hope really. It will scrape top 10 perhaos but im not expecting big sales or a chart run worth commenting on. The album should hopefully do well but it wont sell as much as some people seem to think it will.

never.... unless ive got it wrong, i just cannot see them cracking the usa. tbh i think the bananabints and spice girls did it with the help of the pink dollar , not something i can see the sats doing. if ga cant crack america then im sure the sats wont even try.
