The Saturdays - 'Up' 'Chasing Lights' [13.10.08] [27.10.08]

Featured Replies

Hmm I've just listened to the album and I wasn't that impressed to be honest. The best song is definitely 'Up' in my opinion and the rest seems quite forgettable so far but maybe it's too early to write off an album after a first listen. I didn't find any of the songs particularly bad, just nothing stands out quite as much as 'Up' does. Overall I would just call it a nice album, it's quite generic and could be by any girl band but it's alright.

I did have an issue with 'Issues' though, at first it sounded like a part of it was "Can't decide if I should stab you or kiss you" until I was told it was 'slap' which is obviously the more sensible lyric. I still kinda hear 'stab' at times, but I expect it's just me as I've never been that good at identifying lyrics without them in front of me.

LOL, I have a similar problem with Michelle William's We Break The Dawn, i swear to god she's actaully saying We Rape The Dawn. Or is that just me and my dirty mind?

They were just on Richard and Judy's new show, i missed it. Not like i was the only one, im sure no-one knows or cares about R+J since they ditched the UK's 4th biggest tv channel for an 'upcoming' revolution!

They're on This Morning on Monday, some great promo for the album!

 I think that's you having a dirty mind Aled.

Oops I didn't see it either, I didn't know they'd be on. The show is basically the same as the Channel 4 one but it's pre-recorded so it's easier for them but apart from that I think it's a stupid move, the channel is rubbish.

Richard and Judy's viewing figures are tiny now so i doubt that helped a lot.

This Morning will be a big promo though.

So I've listened too - I'm actually pretty impressed. The only one I'm not really keen on is Lies, I find it a little dull. Issues, Keep Her, Chasing Lights and Work (with it's killer chorus) are great. Whilst it's a pretty 'safe' debut, it's also pretty solid and has some great tracks, and gives them a good foundation to build on IMO.

They're much more my style than the Suga's, so I'm warming to them much more recently than I expected.

Great review from The Times :o

You wouldn't expect much from the former members of S Club 8, but against the odds Frankie Sandford and Rochelle Wiseman have produced a surprisingly fine album. From the Yazoo-sampling If This is Love to Lies (think of Justin Timberlake's What Goes Around as sung by the Corrs), Chasing Lights eclipses recent efforts of the Sugababes and Pussycat Dolls. They may not be pushing pop's boundaries like Girls Aloud or Britney, but the Saturdays' debut is filled with the kind of state-of-the-art chart songs that you wish their peers were making more often. A definite contender for pop album of the year.

Just incase anybody hasn't bought it yet - on the UK iTunes - the "Up - Single" download, featuring the Radio Edit and Wideboys Remix is now £0.79 to buy the 2 songs!
Oh good, they must be pleased with that review. I really think the album could get a really good posistion now, #6 perhaps?
I think it could chart higher than Suga's. Its probably the easiest week compared to Suga's (this week) and GA's (3rd Nov-), rightly so as the need the most help.
I very much doubt Top 10 for the album myself... I recon #12 on 15k or so.

The reviews are racking up and are bloody fantastic! Here's another, this time 4 out of 5 from DigitalSpy ;

Brought to us by Fascination Records, the home of Girls Aloud, The Saturdays are rapidly becoming part of the chart furniture. This glossy five-piece, featuring two former members of S Club Juniors and one X Factor Boot Camp survivor, have cracked the top ten twice in the last three months. Their Yazoo-sampling debut single, 'If This Is Love', reached #8 in August, while the altogether more satisfying 'Up' went three places better this Sunday.

Chasing Lights, their impressive debut album, should maintain the upward momentum. Those seduced by the singles will find plenty to enjoy here, especially 'Lies' and 'Work', which repeat the trick of welding memorable choruses to sparky electropop. There's plenty of feisty attitude too, with lyrics that slam two-timing boys, kick dithering boys up the arse and tell sexy boys exactly how they make them feel. "I'm about to blow my top," the girls sing on the lusty 'Set Me Off' - and they sound like they mean it.

Predictably, the ballads aren't quite as much fun, but they never slip into the sappiness that mars lesser pop albums. The R&B-tinged 'Issues' sounds pretty sweet until the killer line comes - "I don't know if I should slap you or kiss you" - and there's little doubt who's in charge on the break-up songs. The girls are calm and collected on 'Chasing Lights', telling a controlling boyfriend to "go on, bye bye", and there's even a hint of spitefulness on the similarly-themed 'Fall'.

Will they still be around in three albums' time? It's too soon to say - and for now it doesn't really matter. The Saturdays have carved out an enviable niche for themselves with this consistently enjoyable debut album. Their sassy, modern, chart-ready pop is more straightforward than most Girls Aloud singles and younger than the music Sugababes are now recording. The world, or at least the top ten, should be their oyster.

Agreed, they've got Snow Patrol and P!nk to compete against and on a slightly lesser scale Bloc Party, Anastacia, Katie Melua and Celine Dion have albums or Greatest Hits out next week. It's also likely that AC/DC, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs and Leon could still be selling well so I can't see them going top 10 with the album.

Another fantastic review there. Having looked at the competition, i still say the album will go top 10, but perhaps not as highly as i first predicted.

the albums on itunes to buy already and only 5.99

got mine from play.com if it doesnt arrive tomorrow i might be tempted to have on itunes n all

I might just buy. Its an incredible debut effort and Chasing Lights never stops to amaze me
I'm thinking this could be this years best effort by a girlgroup after hearing pussycat dolls, sugababes and most of girls alouds latest albums. hmmm did I really just say that?
hmmm didnt last long resisting downloaded it and cd tomorrow lol
Come on now. Its better than Suga's and PCD but deffo not GA's new effort surely?!
