Posted August 18, 200816 yr one of our foremost songstresses, distinctive vocals, a face of the 60's and got her break via john lennon.. was he right? was her unique voice apt for her style of pop or not? heres some lesser known hits, but i love them! 'its for you' ... how 60's does this sound? kMLuQ0McWXw 'ive been wrong before'... a live performance, this is a beautifully haunting track, check out the vinyl for best results! 9h6qnwMAdlM 'loves just a broken heart'... a wonderfully ott production on this hit from early 66. kQQILSUThls ok, her voice wasnt the most dulcet of tones, and shes probably best remembered nowdays for tacky cheap saturday night tv... but she was an icon in the mid 60's, and dispite her voice i liked her material. 'anyone who had a heart' was a 60's classic, and although not in dustys league was one of our best female artistes.

August 19, 200816 yr As Brian Epstein's discovery and protégé, she was the first and only important female performer to emerge from Liverpool in the heyday of the Merseybeat boom. In conjunction with Epstein's management and George Martin's production skills, she became a formidable ballad singer, her hits lasting longer than any of Epstein clients other than The Beatles. And she became one of the most popular pop-rock performers in England during the late '60s and '70s, and one of the country's most popular and enduring television stars. In the early 1960s, determined to break into show business, she got a part-time job as a cloakroom attendant at the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool, where The Beatles regularly played. Ideally placed to promote herself to local musicians, she impressed the Beatles and others with her talent and began her stage career with impromptu performances at the Cavern. She became a guest singer with Merseybeat bands Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes, and later The Big Three. During this period she also worked as a waitress at the Zodiac coffee lounge, where she met her future husband Bobby Willis. Brian Epstein had a stable of artists drawn from the local music scene, headed by the Beatles. Initially, he showed little interest in Cilla, often billed as Swinging Cilla, or Cilla White. She was introduced to Epstein by John Lennon who persuaded him to audition her. Her first audition was a failure, partly because of nerves, and partly because the Beatles (who backed her) played the songs in their vocal key rather than re-pitching them for Cilla's voice. But after seeing her at a later date, at the Blue Angel jazz club, Epstein signed Cilla up as his only female client on 6 September 1963. The local music paper Mersey Beat misprinted her name as Cilla Black, but Epstein liked the sound of it. Many think that her first hit was Anyone Who Had A Heart (which was a cover of the Dionne Warwick US hit). In fact it was her second. Her first was the uptempo Love Of The Loved which peaked at #35 - 5 months earlier in 1963. My Top 3 in order 1. Love's Just A Broken Heart - her voice oozes passion and George Martin's arrangement is also superb. 2. You're My World 3. Surround Yourself With Sorrow - an uptempo song that peaked at #2 in 1969 This clip is one of only 56 complete songs that survives from Top Of The Pops in the 60s. August 21, 200816 yr Shrill, annoying, scouser.....  And then she became the paragon of Tacky Saturday night telly - Surprise Surprise, Blind Date, etc.....UGH!!!!!!! :puke2: Horrendous woman..... Well between 1967 & 1979 she had her own "Entertainment show" on the BBC, where she always shehorned a duet in with her musical guest: -7db6R4smVo Marc Bolan & Cilla Black - Life's A Gas  .... Funnily enough a certain Welsh former teenage Opera singer is in the running to front Simon Cowell's revival of the ITV's Blind Date show!
August 22, 200816 yr Never been a huge fan of "our Cilla",but I suppose some of her early stuff was ok.
August 24, 200816 yr No-one on BJ could dislike Cilla more than I do (she's a professional scouser for god's sake) but even I can't deny she did some fantastic versions of songs). This one 'Love of the Loved' (closely followed by It's For You) is my favourite! 8g6zMTIJyqg Norma
