August 26, 200816 yr Could anyone tell me what is wrong with this song? Because for me it is perfect and has one of the most beautiful melodies I've heard. Marillion - Lavender  Q7sIzWKHGwQ the melody is a half pinched version of a medieval traditional folk song :)
August 26, 200816 yr the melody is a half pinched version of a medieval traditional folk song :) Really? Wihich one? Could you tell me the title cos I think I might like it as well B)
August 26, 200816 yr Really? Wihich one? Could you tell me the title cos I think I might like it as well B) I think the original folk song is called "Lavender Sweet"..... I'd be willing to bet that someone like Ralph McTell's "covered" it at some point.....
August 26, 200816 yr Other songs with beautiful melodies. The band is called Green Carnation. As Anathema they have metal past but now for me they are rather prog band. Feel free to tell me what do you think about it (this is especially to all prog haters ;-)) Green Carnation - The Burden is Mine... ka0q8jeaw4g Green Carnation - Alone (poem of E. A. August 26, 200816 yr .... actually i might be wrong, ill have to listen to marillion first and sounds off atm :)
August 27, 200816 yr Green Carnation - Maybe. Beautiful song, a little bit more experimental (anybody remembers theremin? It's great!) :yahoo: onvnoiyfOm0
August 27, 200816 yr ok 'lavender' IS taken from the traditional folk song 'lavenders blue'.. the chorus is a direct steal.
August 27, 200816 yr ok 'lavender' IS taken from the traditional folk song 'lavenders blue'.. the chorus is a direct steal. But it's a clever stealing cos Fish only repeated what the children were singing... ;) Thank you for your lost time and finding the title of original song :-)
August 27, 200816 yr this is the nearest version i can find on youtube, but its a popular folk song with many varients. pgd4dVDMU30
August 27, 200816 yr It was on the BBC Playschool record in the early 1980's - I always hated it. I much preferred the ones Derek Griffiths sang like 'Ricky and his aeroplane'.
August 29, 200816 yr Sorry Moonloop I know you like Opeth but the singing takes the ruddy biscuit. Why do so many "prog-metal" bands see the need to record vocals that would make custard curdle at fifty yards. (ooops those were acoustic ballads where he actually sings!!!!) And for your information I do like Marillion. But not the crud that made up the Misplaced Childhood album. Give me Script for a Jester's Tear or Fugazi anyday. Now Assassing that is a track and a half! Or even Grendel (13 minutes of excellent music) Edited August 29, 200816 yr by grebo69
August 29, 200816 yr Nah, I think that most people hate prog rock because Q magazine and NME tell peole that this music is uncool ;-) You know there is zillion prog rock bands and they are very different. It's pretty lame to hate the whole genre knowing only two or three bands. And not all King Crimson songs are so complicated. For example Epitaph XScR9QR0gGQ And I have a question. Do you find classical music full of c**p and w*n**ry? I am sorry. I have sat through far too many King bloody Crimson albums waiting for that divine spark to hit me and then just been bored out of my life. I think the majority of Robert Fripp's music is boring beyond belief and even caused David Sylvian to produce the worst music of his career. (Apart from Heroes and Fade Away and Radiate that is ;) ) And classical music says nothing to me about my life. Love it when I can see a full orchestra live and feel the force of the music but to me it just doesn't touch me the way rock n roll does. Just don't use prog's "similarities" to classical as an argument coz you'll fall flat on your face. Lots of 70s prog does have too many notes used just to highlight some virtuoso playing that do nothing to improve a song. The best classical music will use as many needs as it takes to get the point across and never too many.
August 29, 200816 yr All I can say is thank fukk that punk wiped a lot of this away - just a shame it didn't last forever. And Camel are prime purveyors of muzak, nothing more nothing less.

Now Assassing that is a track and a half! Or even Grendel (13 minutes of excellent music) ruddy biscuit ? (don't understand) I don't know what's wrong with Michael voice, really  ( for me his voice is one of those that you really can feel emotions. I place it with artist like Buckley, Yorke ect..) Do you mean it about his voice in general or this live performance? In fact I'm not sure if I understand what you wrote ( English is not my native language, sorry). :( vocals that would make custard curdle at fifty yards? Is it really about Opeth? I disagree here but It woud make more sense If you were talking about Dream Theater  :puke2: (but I do really like their 'Space dye vest' song ;-)) ZkfrgUTLfWo Oh, yeah Script for a Jester's Tear and Fugazi are great albums but have to disagree about Misplaced Childhood but I guess each to their own haha ;-). And Camel are prime purveyors of muzak, nothing more nothing less.Again I don't understand what you wrote  I disagree about punk. I really like some classic stuff from The Clash and Sex Pistols ect. but in general it's a big sh** and I know what I'm writing about. My sister is a great punk rock fan and some of the bands that she listen to are bad beyond belief :puke2: The best classical music will use as many needs as it takes to get the point across and never too many. The same I can tell about the best prog music ;-). Just I don't understand why people backlash all genre (and often knowing only two or three prog bands). (I'm not talking particulary about you cos it seems that you know something about it;-))
August 30, 200816 yr Don't see how you can diss Punk by just including The Clash and The Pistols. That's disregarding The Ramones, The Adverts, X-Ray Spex, Stiff Little Fingers and numerous other amazing bands. And then there's all the amazing Post-Punk developments that followed taking Rock into some really strange corners.

And then there's all the amazing Post-Punk developments that followed taking Rock into some really strange corners. I said apart from classic stuff but in punk rock genre there is so much really bad music that I can't stand, sorry I can't help it ;-). I don't diss the hole genre, I think that like in prog rock there are really significant bands but also crappy too. I just don't think that Punk is in any rate better than Prog. Well, maybe I'm a little bit unfair and my sis only listen to crappy punk  not the good one ;-) so I have a skewed view on it   I don't like when people generalise the music. I can happily find something good in so many genres (apart of hip hop, R&B.....really not my cup of tea). Yeah some post punk music is great but I can say the same about post prog music too ;-) To be honest I enjoy post punk music so much more than PUNK (which is just boring for me in general) Like I said earlier each to their own. August 30, 200816 yr I have a question. Why this thread is in Retro Section? Prog rock is not some prehistoric genre. I think this thread should be in Rock Section. Even if everybody here doesn't likes such music it is still rock  Well maybe I'm wrong but please enlighten me ;)
August 30, 200816 yr Because the subject of the thread was 70s Prog so all your posts about new Prog aren't really relevent here.
August 30, 200816 yr oh, in that case mods if you like please delate my not relevant posts. I don't care
