Posted August 29, 200816 yr groundbreaking newcastle band promoted by micky most climbed on the british rhythm and blues boom of the early/mid 60's and scored a string of unique hits. fronted by eric burdon with his distinctive 'rock' voice, they often took their inspiration from the deprived backstreets of post war newcastle. when burdon sang lyrics like "in this dirty old part of the city, where the sun refuse to shine" he knew exactly what he was singing about. his aspirations were clear in 'its my life' .. "though im dressed in these rags ill wear sable, one day" . "we gotta get out of this place" and he did! often overlooked for the more fashionable kinks, who and small faces, they had far more to offer then just 'house of the rising sun'. 64 'baby let me take you home' #21 64 'house of the rising sun' #1 64 'im crying' #8 65 'dont let me be misunderstood' #3 65 'bring it on home to me' #7 65 'wever gotta get out of this place' #2 65 'its my life' #7 66 'inside - lokking out' #12 66 ' dont bring me down' #6 keyboardist alan price left to form his own band 'the alan price set' scoring a string of hits 66 'i put a spell on you' #9 66 'hi lili hi lo' #11 67 'simon smiths amazing dancing bear' #4 67 'the house that jack built' #4 67 'shame' #45 68 'dont stop the carnival' #13 mid 66 the animals split, basist chas chandler discovered jimi hendrix in america and brought him here, managing this legend to success. chandler went on to manage other groups including slade. the animals part 2, was an eric burdon project, maybe he got too big for his boots aka diana ross style... 66 'help me girl' #14 67 'when i was young' #45 67 'good times' #20 67 'san franciscan nights' #7 plus a few minor hits in 68.. personally i know every one of these hits, even the minor ones.. 'shame' only got to #45?.. all in all i think thats a pretty impressive list. i LOVE 'its my life' and 'inside - looking out', which is an album track, not single mmaterial but still hit the top 20! a great, innovative, british group with personality, identity and with something to say.

August 30, 200816 yr I love The Animals Mk II stuff like San Franciscan Nights, Sky Pilot and Monterey. Can't stand the Alan Price stuff. The Animals MK1 were a great band and well worth investigating.
