Al Murray is hilarious. You clearly do not get the joke.

In real life he (Alastair James Hay Murray) studied at Oxford University in History (his serious programmes for the History channel are excellent) who created his stereotypical post modern xenophobic Sun loving pub landlord character who is a mix of Alf Garnett & Jim Davidson and loves Queen (he is not a fan of them in real life much preferring Led Zeppelin) & hates Duran Duran (who he likes in real life) is a p*** take. His granddad was a World War II correspondent for the BBC, an his grear-great-great grandad was William Makepeace Thackeray satirical writer of Vanity Fair and other works.

He comes from the same Oxford Revue that gave us Harry Hill, Armando Iannucci, Stewart Lee and Richard Herring. Before coming up with his hilarious Pub Landlord character he wrote material for Brass Eye, The Lee & Herring Show, Skinner & Baddiel & still contributes to the Harry Hill's TV Burp.

God some people are dumb, or did you think Warren Mitchell's Alf Garnett character was real as well?

I see you have your patronising head on this morning TIP. And you shouldn't call people dumb because they don't like the same stuff as you. Quoting people's ancestry does nothing to change my mind as to what I think about Murray as a comedian. I couldn't care less if his father was Jake Thackray and his mother Joyce Grenfell, the guy doesn't make me laugh. Four of us watched it last night and it didn't raise a solitary titter. It is funny you mention Alf Garnett though ... as at first we all thought Phil Collins was Warren Mitchell.

Thank heavens we later had the chance to watch Omid Djalili's stand up show. Now he was funny.

Incidentally ... I can also only take Harry Hill in small doses ... and I can't stand Till Death Us Do Part.

Ditto - I only bought his Hits collection as part of one of those 2 CDs for £10 HMV sales jobs. I think most of his best work was done in Genesis and I will defend Follow You, Follow Me for the great song that it is to the hilt.

The main reason I can see for his hate is his bald-headed appearance as post the Stock Aitken & Waterman era it has become all about image over content hence why that moron Popjustice's Peter Robinson hails "I'd Rather Jack" as a great song because a song written by 3 40 somethings for two teenage girls slagging off talented musicans is so much better than a Paul Weller or Stephen Morrissey social commentary....

Well I think its time for a 'what is better: I'd Rather Jack vs Paul Weller social commentary' .....!!!!

I'd Rather Jack

The Style Council - Life At A Top People's Health Farm

The Style Council - Wanted

Waiting - The Style Council

The Style Council - it didnt matter

and yeah after listening to that the conclusion is that I'd Rather Jack is a much better record than any of Paul Weller's social commentarys from that period - dull plodding pop-funk excersions and esp with a song as bad as Wanted something so bad that if you had a choice you rather wanna listen to dave lister's om song than that!!!!

Cat - Tongue Tied (tho it could easily pass for a style council tune!!!  )

^ Well of course you find nothing wrong about Pete Waterman who was/is older than the likes of Dad Rockers Mark Knopfler, Sting & Phil Collins writing a song with lyrics moaning about all the old acts around at the time then.

At the time Pete Waterman claimed it was their "God Save The Queen" FFS.

As for Style Council, if you bothered listening to the lyrics of Life At A Top People's Health Farm you would know that it is rather sarcastic savage put down of the Conservative administration and all that it stood for.

Still how many more hits did the Reynolds Girls have eh? Whilst I must have missed Bill Clinton using their song as an anthem for his administration & I must have missed the Corrs cover of the said song.

Still as for Fleetwood Mac:

Fleetwood Mac - Big Love (1987)

Does that video (concept thought up for by Lindsay Buckingham) look familiar eh?

White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

Ting Tings - Shut Up & Let Me Go

The simple fact is all the new acts that the Reynolds Girls namecheck in that song have all long since disappeared, yet the acts they slag off are still around. Why is that then?

Answer: Maybe because those old acts had something most Stock Aitken & Waterman acts failed to possess: Musical Talent.

and as i said earlier...this thread - its less about the music more about politics...and i guess thats true for phil collins as well - as isnt didnt he said he would leave the country if labour won an election...and a certain group who dislike s/a/w seem to equally dislike phil collins as well...coinscidence..yeah totally... and even if Life At A Top People's Health Farm is an attack on the Conservative administration so what? thats like totally irrelevant to me...(Thatcher's time in office just another item in history as much as the 1948 london olympics, the queen's Coronation and the Empire Windrush) and can only be judge by what it sounds like and on this occasion i would say worse than the blow monkeys....

London Is The Place For Me - Lord Kitchener

Young Tiger - I Was There (at the Coronation)

Mr. Loverman by Shabba Ranks

Still how many more hits did the Reynolds Girls have eh?

Wire - In Vivo

and what does that have to do with anything, wire have had 2 small top 75 single hits paul young 21!!! love - 0 hit singles, westlife 14 number ones, laibach - 0 hits ocean color scene - quite a lot....moby grape nothing whatsoever but inxs - bloody loads. why would you want the reynolds girls to have any more hits?? kinda missing the point there. (tho un updated aatw remix making it I'd rather jack than Nick-el-back...would be more wanted than banananananananrama doing voyage voyage  )

well as i've never got round to youtubing that record yet - what you should have said does that song sound familar? yes it's most of Bleachin' - Peakin'

and then i could have posted haysi fantayzee - shiny shiny yet again and maybe we would have to agree with each other that yeah they might be something worse in dreads in the 80s than boy george  :puke2:

and btw the new Lindsay Buckingham album is suppose to be very good but nobody will buy it as its not branded as a fleetwood mac album...well thats what most reviews say as the last fleetwood mac album started life as a Buckingham solo album...

Another one. Jesus some people really don't get irony/(the joke) do they.

Besides how can you watch South Park  - a show that stopped being funny in 2001, compared to Family Guy that show is now about as funny as Aids.

I could understand if you watched the Jonathan Ross show, but oh dear me.

to me al murray is someone you have to be in the mood for... generally though i dont like 'drunks', i never could abide gregor fisher either and yes i know his character is ironic, i know hes a complete p*** take, but i simply was not in the mood for him.

i never saw ALL the southpark episodes anyway so that one was fresh to me/us and was amusing and yes we do watch family guy which for 95% of the time is very lame but 5% of the time is side splittingly hilarious. i still laugh more at 'the simpsons' though... i was crying with laughter at fridays episode on 4 at 6.

i cannot abide ross... i cant watch him, he makes me sick. on my metal detecting forays i listen to the radio... radio2, sounds of the 60's, i hope im at my destination by 10 because if ross comes on i turn it off! ... o'grady and ross i do not watch.

I always thought Phil Collins liked taking the p*** out of himself, who else would have let their grotesque puppets from spitting image be used in a music video for one of their own songs

Genesis - Land of confusion

I love Invisible Touch with Genesis. Most of his solo stuff is bad. You Can't Hurry Love is kind of a cute and unexpected cover, though!

tbh i agree.. i dont think he took himself too seriously being of the 'monty python' generation who liked buffoonery.
