October 22, 200816 yr I think its lower than the UK, though I'm not too sure. Maybe Ben will know more about this
October 22, 200816 yr the UK's music market is so buoyant, the US has 5 times as many people yet their music sales are nowhere near 5 times as many (albums wise, singles are getting bigger since the introduction of downloads)
October 22, 200816 yr Author shame :( their population is bigger than the UK isn't it, over 70 million I think, so sales can't be that much different, probably higher as they are generally seen as one of the four dominating music markets in the world, along with US, UK and Japan As far as I know the German market is the second biggest in Europe but far behind the UK. Unfortuntely the sales are not available for anybody. But in a minute I try to check who's got some certifications. That can give you some information about the German market.
October 22, 200816 yr I remember in 2004 when France had higher singles sales than in the UK, now the #1 sells something like 15k...
October 22, 200816 yr France, you said the No.1 sells 15k now, is this made up of physicals, downloads or both?
October 22, 200816 yr Author German certifications for singles: Gold (at least 150,000 copies) Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl Amy MacDonald - This Is My Life Kid Rock - All Summer Long Ich+Ich - So Soll Es Bleiben Leona Lewis - Better In Time Duffy - Mercy Mark Ronson - Valerie Platinum (at least 300,000 copies) Madonna - 4 Minutes Ich+Ich - Stark 2x Platinum (at least 600,000 copies) DJ Ötzi & Nik P. - Ein Stern Timbaland - Apologize That's all I found from the sheet of last week's chart. BTW from 1st January 2003 were the barrier for gold and platinum sinlges decreased (platinum from 500k to 300k) BTW the German chart are compiled not by the numbers of sold units, it is compiled by the sold value, that means a CD single that is more expensive (2-5 EUR) than a download (1 EUR) has more weight in the chart. Don't ask me though, I don't know exactly how it is compiled in the end. A bit complicated.
October 22, 200816 yr Author France, you said the No.1 sells 15k now, is this made up of physicals, downloads or both? in France they have a physicals only chart as far as I know. Generally the top 2 sometimes the top 3 are above 10k all the other much less.
October 22, 200816 yr Yeah France is only physicals. But downloads havent really taken off yet anyway. They make a lot of difference in terms of chart positions cos sales are really low, but not in terms of overall sales.
October 22, 200816 yr no wonder then, the UK sales would be pathetic if only physicals were included  sometimes even the No.1 can't get past 5k! thanks for the Germany figures Ben, they seem to have smaller sales then, with only 4 songs going over 300k Ein Stern had about a year in the top ten didn't it

I checked and Sash! never had a platinum or gold album or single in Germany :( But as I said before 2003 the barrier was higher.
October 22, 200816 yr He hasnt had a 500k selling single or album in the UK either, although he's been closer with his first 3 singles (all of them over 400k)
October 22, 200816 yr Author I need to buy his Best Of now, I don't have his previous best of and none of his old albums. I had his first one but I've lent it to someone and never got it back. It was a cassette
October 22, 200816 yr Did a little digging, and apparently all his singles were playlisted on Radio 1 apart from Colour The World and With My Own Eyes. I think WMOE would've gone top5 with R1 support
October 22, 200816 yr Did a little digging, and apparently all his singles were playlisted on Radio 1 apart from Colour The World and With My Own Eyes. I think WMOE would've gone top5 with R1 support without a doubt, fantastic song that deserved far better than No.10 I wasn't so keen on Colour The World, it sounded dated seeing as excellent dance songs around at the same time from DJ Sakin & Friends and Emmie sounded a lot fresher
October 22, 200816 yr Author With My Own Eyes was so underrated. In Germany the song peaked only at number 46. :(
October 22, 200816 yr I think the song received a backlash cos Just Around The Hill got a lot of airplay but didnt do nearly as well as expected. In Europe it flopped so there was no hope for WMOE. As for Colour The World, I really liked it, it has a great melody. But yeah there were better dance songs released that week, especially System F - Out Of The Blue :D
October 22, 200816 yr 'Just Around The Hill' is my favourite. I like most of them though, 'With My Own Eyes' did deserve better but it did respectably I'd say. 'I Believe' is amazing and deserved to be released here.
