With thanks to rachel at dm

From an article on the Coventry Telegraph website, it looks like Darius will be at the Albert Hall on Sunday:

They will also sing a range of other songs with accompaniment and other performers, including Ruthie Henshall, Darius Danesh and Katherine Jenkins.

The event, called the Big Sing, is organised by the BBC, which broadcasts Songs of Praise. The concert will be filmed by the BBC for the programme. Part of it will be broadcast on Songs of Praise Big Sing on Sunday, October 26, and part of it will appear on Songs of Praise Big Sing Christmas Special on Sunday, December 14.

I wondered if this was on at the same time as ALW birthday party in the park. They are expecting 30,000 for that and Duncan james is singing two songs, Mr mistofelees from Cats an d the song he took into no.3 in the charts from woman in white. I do hope they get a good audience at the albert hall.

The ALW thing is on today.

If Darius was doing that instead today - it would simply be reconfirmed that yes, Darius can sing MT very, very well. An appearance there might have cemented the impression that he'd swopped over to a career in MT, instead of it just being one element of his career.

The Big Sing introduces Darius to yet a different audience, one no less appreciative of good music than MT ones. It's another chance to show that he's much more than just a "pop singer". Apart from half of When A Child Is Born on PI, I don't think Darius has ever sung Hymns or Psalms or even traditional Christmas Carols in public.

Does anyone know if he sang a hymn at that wedding?

The more different audiences Darius sings to, even if it means not singing his own songs for that night or so, the more likely it is that he will be accepted simply as a singer and not put into a "pop" or MT or "swing/jazz" box.

It's a shame IMO that it's yet another occasion when secrecy seems to surround the names of the actual performers and Darius couldn't reveal he was going to do this and there was no pre-performance publicity.

I'd absolutely love to hear Darius sing "Be Thou My Vision " using his bass baritone.

I waited by the stage door for over an hour. Saw Aria who said he'd hurry him up but when he hadn't come out by 11pm we had to go.

He sang brilliantly. Did two songs - I need you every hour and From a distance. He also chatted for a bit with Aled Jones but had to be on a lower step so he wouldn't be too tall. He spoke about the first time he sang Colourblind at the Albert Hall, mentioned Live Twice and his dad's recovery from Cancer. Aled asked him about growing up in a household which had two religions and he said that it taught him that there is only one God. He also said how his mum used to sing to him at bedtime and he mentioned working on his third album. There's probably more but I'm too tired to remember.

We were lucky because he had to sing From a Distance twice as there was a technical problem with the first one. He sang the second even better and the high note he ended on was an awesome finish.

He wore a suit and shirt but no tie. I was in very high up seats so it was difficult to see his face. He was tired and jet-lagged apparently because he'd flown in from LA yesterday. From where I was sitting he seemed very slim.

He is on the 26 October show.

Thankyou Nina. I love from a distance, would be great song for him to sing. If he was going to do a cover, would love that.Will so look forward to seeing it on tv.
My hubby thought that if he recorded it, he could have an Xmas number one.

I totally agree Nina but then he never does what we think is right does he. Bet someone else will.

oh god - news, I need ot see darius soo much, I am realy down at present, no bathroom..nother diy disaster, LOL but havent been on for so long due to feeling so low at not having ANY nusci to listen to I like, and NO MT to look forward too - Every thing I see on TV seems to be rubbing in that Darius isnt around!

I am so looking forward to 26th october, I dont watch SOP but will have to, I cant place the songs? from a distance is that a Bet Midler one,

From A Distance Is a Judy Collins' song, I believe, but the Bette Midler version got way mpre publicity. I'll look forward to seeing Darius singing that on the show. What luck to get it twice!

I Need Thee Every Hour is a good strong traditional hymn usually sung quite slowly, so that should serve as a bit of a contrast, provided of course, that both songs make the final edit of the programme in October.

At least this time I'll know that he won't be shown singing Colourblind.

Here, the scaffolding is going up as I speak, so it's a tad noisy. At last I can believe we'll have a brand new roof for this winter. No more leaks, no more fear of a landslide of tiles or any more storm damage to the chimneys.

I think I am more worried that he will be on!! Wecome back PIP, have missed your posts.

I tell you what if they edit From a distance and show the other, I will be furious, will definitely think there is some prejudice there.

hope the roof all goes smopthly - now we have the box down in the bathroom, we see there is a leak in the roof above it...but we now have new gutters, so no more waterfalls in heavy rain, these days its all spend on just keeping at a standstill!

I love from a distance, no idea about the other song - but I do hope we get to hear both really, as usual I feel there will be some hitch, as said Darius doesnt really go the career opportunities direction we think he should, I really wished he had got another MT role asap tbh, and as for this album, I am beginning to wonder....after all so many others are just putting their stuff out on myspace and the likes..yet we have nothing

Did Darius just sing with the band/ orchestra or were the choirs involved?

I'm trying to figure out if he chose those songs himself or if he was asked to sing them.

I Need Thee Every Hour was a very popular hymn in the Church of Scotland. We used to sing it quite often. It may be a fanily/ personal favourite for a special reason.

I'm not sure if it made it into the 3rd or 4th edition of the hymnary , a lot of Scottish Paraphrases and traditional hymns were dropped and replaced with more modern ones..

Thanks Nina.

Lots have sung 'From a Distance' including Cliff.

It's a very moving song.

I do hope we get to hear him sing it.

I don't know the other but 'I need thee every hour' is in my New Hymns and Worship Songs, so a 'newer' song to traditonal hymns.

At least his interview will be shown.

Did he not sing with the children's choir?

The advert read as if he would.

Can you remember what Ruthie sang?

Just looked it up. Written in 1872 by Annie S Hawks and the music was written by her pastor. The song was first published at the National Baptist Sunday School convention in November 1872.

Very simple and repetitive like many reliigious choruses.

I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord;

No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.

Refrain

I need Thee, O I need Thee;

Every hour I need Thee;

O bless me now, my Savior,

I come to Thee.

I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby;

Temptations lose their power when Thou art nigh.

Refrain

I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain;

Come quickly and abide, or life is in vain.

Refrain

I need Thee every hour; teach me Thy will;

And Thy rich promises in me fulfill.

Refrain

I need Thee every hour, most Holy One;

O make me Thine indeed, Thou blessèd Son.

Refrain

wonder if it has had it's music changed....then it will depend on which version they did.....as we wouldn't know...it doesn't really matter :rolleyes:
I didn't know the hymn so can't tell you what tune. He only sang the first two verses and the chorus. The first refrain he did as a solo, the second had the stage choirs as backing. It was fantastic though. You are in for a treat on the 26th October
