Not really, you have to remember that on the first few pages they were going to be up against Leona, Dido, Beyoncé, Christina etc. so most of us thought they'd get stuck behind at least one or two of them. If this was done closer to the time I expect there'd be a lot more people saying #1 as there isn't that much competition this week.

 

Just because GA were up against leona, dido and beyonce doesnt mean it wasnt possible for GA to go no1. If GA sell 70k+ this week, is that what you expect those other three acts to sell in their first week?

 

Also, i dont think you are right anyway, people were saying things like bland song 6-10 and no way is this song good enough for no1, not many were actually referring to the other competition.

 

I predicted one or two because i knew it was a good song that would be popular ^_^

 

All i was saying was that its quite amusing to watch people try to play down a song that is now proving to be somewhat massive.

We are aloud to have opinions though. I absolutely hated Basshunter's Now Your Gone but it proved to be a massive selling hit. I still dont think its a very strong single, Number 3 for me would be about the most. Yeah, they are going to get number 1. Well I didn't expect GA to sell as much as they have, I thought they'd sell about 40-45K and I said they'd be #3 behind Leona and probably Dido. Now I don't think Dido will have a very big comeback single, we'll see when (if?) it's added to iTunes tomorrow as it's been moved forward to next week again. As for Leona, I doubt she'll shift 70K+ with her next single (I almost said comeback) unless it's performed on the X Factor on the right week.

 

I'm glad this is going to be #1 now, it's my second favourite Girls Aloud song and the third one I can actually say I love. The rest of their singles are nice enough but nothing I'm really fussed over.

If their albums were worldwide blockbusters selling millions of copies, I reckon:

 

1) they wouldn´t have time to release albums as quick as they do.

2) the temptation of the members to go solo would be too strong, and eventually ruin it.

 

The Spice Girls made too much money in a ridiculously short time. At that point, they simply didn´t need to release more stuff and their egos killed the band. With GA it won´t happen, cause they know they are not big enough to go solo, and if you consider their sales and divide by 5, I don´t think they are making such a huge amount of money TBH.

Come on now, if you're going to make statements back them up. Girls Aloud have massive tours and massive endorsement deals, this is what brings in the big bucks.

 

They're on millions a year, with i reckon only a 10th of that coming from their records.

Not acting smug, just stating facts and i find it quite funny how people were saying how poor the song was and are dissapointed and are the same people who are now praising it coz its doing well. Not too disimillar as Call The Shots

 

Well, the song is still very poor after all, despite going # 1. Chart sucess doesn´t mean artistic quality.

 

Plus, it´s only good that things are not that predictable. Situations change, and we don´t have a crystal ball to predict it. For example, a few months ago anyone would predict Dido would have a big comeback. How could we predict she is going to release the lead single of her comeback album without a music video and without doing any TV performance at all? With not even a few remixes of the track??? Basically, she just recorded a song, put it in a CD and handed it to record stores, which diminish her probabilities of sucess by 95%, I guess. However, GA is a promotional machine. The girls don´t even have involvement in making the music at all, they are just pretty tools the record label chooses to promote it. Then again, the biggest rival of this song would have been Leona´s Forgive Me, which, because of the date change, is not clashing anymore. So we better just wait until Leona releases her single and compare the opening week sales. Otherwise, it makes no sense making fun of people predictions, when nobody could supposed everything would change.

One, musicians are in the music business, business being the operative word, they want to maximise sales and so should all do promotion. GA get the best promotion because of how big they are. So to criticise a chart act for doing heavy promotion is just ridiculous.

 

Your second comment about "getting what we wanted" sounds really bitter and cheap. Like you have some chip on your shoulder about it?

lolz - you look so depressed about it! I have fallen in love with Cheryl too :o I think that Xenomania write the songs :unsure:

Brian higgins and miranda cooper at xenomania write their songs mostly. They know the girls VERY well. Brian has spent a lot of tome with the girls from day 1, he knows them through and through.

 

Its quite a special r/ship because a lot of acts approach producers that they dont really know but GA turn to xenomania every time and they just keep banging out the tracks year after year, its very special.

It's a tough argument. On the one hand, as you said Bertie, nobody knows the girls like Brian and their work has produced magic time and again.

 

On the other hand, working with Xeno it's hard to get a song with lyrics with real emotion, because the Xeno team simply take lyrics from tens of songs and bung them together in one, in the vain of a scrapbook, and so most of the songs make little or no sense.

 

I really believe they should work with other producers alongside Xenomania. If the work with other people didn't have that Xeno magic, they wouldn't need to include it on the album, but trying couldn't hurt. Artists should constantly push themselves and with Xeno now they're in a comfort zone imo.

^^ but if you think about it, xenomania have just given them a number 1 so i doubt they will be going anywhere fast.

I didn´t criticize them for doing promo... They´re right for doing that, I just say that there aren´t so many merits by achieving a good chart position when they have been all around.

 

LMAO at the comment of them promoting too much because of being too big. GA isn´t even among the 10 biggest UK acts of this era, yet you have british artists who are much bigger then them without doing a half of the promo they do.

 

Also, there is the factor that they don´t have an international career, which means they can spend 100% of their agenda promoting in UK, while the real big artists of the nation have to split between Europe, America, Oceania, etc.

 

Then there´s also the fact they don´t have any artistic pretention. While other artists have to spend time actually making and writing music, they can have almost full time to just promote cause the music is being made by someone else. Releasing a new album every year would be almost impossible for the real big acts of UK, like Coldplay, Oasis, Dido, cause they can´t spend 10 months touring, then make everything ready in 2 months. GA can, cause while they´re touring and promoting their singles, producers already have everything in the box for their next album, so that they just need to arrive at the studios and put their voices on it, which can be done in a matter of days.

 

Considering all the hype surrounding them and the amount of promo they had in their entire career, they should have achieved much more then they did, no just "ok-ish" selling albums.

No, it´s not, it´s just plain truth...

 

Chart sucess usually don´t fit with musical sucess.

 

Real musicians are interested just in music, and they usually pass far from the Top 10 in music charts. Trendy pop acts like GA are more interested in the "celebrity" life then the music itself. That´s the reason they invest everything in promo and end up sucessful. A song can still be c**p and reach the top spot. GA proves it again this week. Real musicians know that they don´t have much chances of commercial sucess in charts that are dominated by manufactured girls that can´t even play an instrument.
