Just recently saw a documentary about Stiff Records on BBC4 and was surprised at how many great pop songs the label had released. There were some c**p ones too (Alvin Stardust - Pretend springs to mind) but these:

Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

Lene Lovich - Lucky Number

Madness (all of them)

Kirsty MacColl - A New England

Belle Stars - Sign Of The Times

Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know

Damned - New Rose

Excellent!

I watched Friday nights excellent documentary on Roxy Music it was great to see the likes of Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno and the other members of the band talking candidly about the band, likewise seeing the likes of the clearly influenced John Taylor (Duran Duran), Siouxsie Sioux, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Nile Rodgers (Chic) & Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) talk about the band, but is there any subject Bono (U2) does not have an opinion on.

Which reminds me of this:

Big Train - Virginia Plain

and the real thing:

Roxy Music - In Every Dream Home a Heartache

well its not surprising Goldfrapp tuned up - tho as the interviews were small here's hoping that they were asked other things for other bbc four docs at the same time...could do with having a follow up about french/cosmic disco...tho obv this wouldnt fit well with the britainia doc brand

also was looking at all the free cds this morning, seeing if there was something decent to play and noticed something....

free album by Adam and the Ants. made by Adam Ant, Merrick, Marco Pirroni, Terry Lee Maill, Gary Tibbs

a Gary Tibbs was mentioned in that roxy music documentary and its the same person... now wiki says that - Gary Tibbs member of Adam & the Ants, Roxy Music, The Vibrators, and The Fixx (?!?!? - who ever they are its a worse name than phixx)...and seeing as that early roxy music track worked so well with that footage of punks...maybe you could say yeah its all interlinked...and almost the same thing...well if not totally the same sounds - really just just about dressing up...

^ Well Stuart Goddard (aka Stuart Goddard) was a former Punk rocker, part of the "Bromley Contingent" along with William Broad (Billy Idol) & Susan Ballion (Siouxsie Sioux) & others.

Adam & The Ants - Xerox Machine (1979)

Whom a fellow Roxy Music glam rocker Marc Bolan tracked down and highlighted this burgeoning movement in 1977.

Glam Rock, Punk Rock & the New Romantics all shared a common vision about escapism with a significant element of art, creativity and individualism.

In short the very opposite of Stock Aitken & Waterman, & Simon Cowell's money making so called talent shows.

one of the videos that turn up last night on youtube had billy idol presenting it - which made me laugh as it was like so cheesy even more than the video that followed it - which was probs Modern Talking...

Looking at the celeb impresonations for Tracey Ullman's State of the Union show - it doesnt seem that she has done Paula Abdul or sharon osbourne yet - tho Victoria Beckham and Dina Lohan are listed...pity as that would be fun and kinda ironic (but not in a canuck teen singer with a bit of power ballad angst type of way...)
