Posted September 16, 200816 yr Just recently saw a documentary about Stiff Records on BBC4 and was surprised at how many great pop songs the label had released. There were some c**p ones too (Alvin Stardust - Pretend springs to mind) but these: Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick Lene Lovich - Lucky Number Madness (all of them) Kirsty MacColl - A New England Belle Stars - Sign Of The Times Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know Damned - New Rose Excellent!
September 16, 200816 yr indeed, the original 'indie' label?... certainly they were in the right place at the right time as punk exploded into the british youth culture. interesting read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stiff_Records
September 20, 200816 yr Just recently saw a documentary about Stiff Records on BBC4 and was surprised at how many great pop songs the label had released. There were some c**p ones too (Alvin Stardust - Pretend springs to mind) but these: yeah i've seen that doc quite a few times now....tho last night it was roxy music. however think they could have mentioned these three words.... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b2/ZTT_logo_from_sleeve.png
September 21, 200816 yr yeah i've seen that doc quite a few times now....tho last night it was roxy music. I watched Friday nights excellent documentary on Roxy Music it was great to see the likes of Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno and the other members of the band talking candidly about the band, likewise seeing the likes of the clearly influenced John Taylor (Duran Duran), Siouxsie Sioux, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Nile Rodgers (Chic) & Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) talk about the band, but is there any subject Bono (U2) does not have an opinion on. Which reminds me of this: 1tFF2oB4n6M Big Train - Virginia Plain and the real thing: t3D2JSBxjzI Roxy Music - In Every Dream Home a Heartache

September 21, 200816 yr ^ Well Stuart Goddard (aka Stuart Goddard) was a former Punk rocker, part of the "Bromley Contingent" along with William Broad (Billy Idol) & Susan Ballion (Siouxsie Sioux) & others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromley_Contingent QQ-NfpufPYs Adam & The Ants - Xerox Machine (1979) Whom a fellow Roxy Music glam rocker Marc Bolan tracked down and highlighted this burgeoning movement in 1977. Glam Rock, Punk Rock & the New Romantics all shared a common vision about escapism with a significant element of art, creativity and individualism. In short the very opposite of Stock Aitken & Waterman, & Simon Cowell's money making so called talent shows.

Glam Rock, Punk Rock & the New Romantics all shared a common vision about escapism with a significant element of art, creativity and individualism. one of the videos that turn up last night on youtube had billy idol presenting it - which made me laugh as it was like so cheesy even more than the video that followed it - which was probs Modern Talking... In short the very opposite of Stock Aitken & Waterman, & Simon Cowell's money making so called talent shows. Looking at the celeb impresonations for Tracey Ullman's State of the Union show - it doesnt seem that she has done Paula Abdul or sharon osbourne yet - tho Victoria Beckham and Dina Lohan are listed...pity as that would be fun and kinda ironic (but not in a canuck teen singer with a bit of power ballad angst type of way...) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9f/Celebtrace.jpg and talking about talent shows...here not only the German Simon Cowell, but the german pete waterman's greatest hits...Dieter Bohlen U6CzZVWiVBE Modern Talking - Ready For The Victory QEO5nf2Ce_k Modern Talking - Only Love Can Break My Heart 4IbPGxYWS_k modern talking--you're my heart you're my soul ect3VoEUJn8 Modern Talking - Brother Louie 2Y7c1_gK8Os Modern Talking - Cheri Cheri Lady M5rzLS8d8Ck MODERN TALKING - SEXY SEXY LOVER DteIcZ1A-VM CC Catch - Heartbreak Hotel 9sUmwfraH28 C.C. September 26, 200816 yr Modern Talking were fab! But........... S/A/W were also fab. Think Kylie, Jason, Donna, Sonia, Rick, Bananarama, Dead or Alive, etc................
September 27, 200816 yr Modern Talking were fab! But........... S/A/W were also fab. Think Kylie, Jason, Donna, Sonia, Rick, Bananarama, Dead or Alive, etc................ that crock o' shyte is exactly the opposite to what stiff records stood for <_<. suggest you read the appropriate thread in s/a/w.
September 27, 200816 yr Modern Talking were fab! But........... S/A/W were also fab. Think Kylie, Jason, Donna, Sonia, Rick, Bananarama, Dead or Alive, etc................ Yeah agree with this person totally...and how could you disagree with someone who goes by the name 'pmachinery' with a little picture of propaganda.... :cheer: and actually that is a good point to bring up the sequal to that big Stiff Box compilation that came out...not surprisingly the sequal to the Stiff Records box will be....drumroll please... THE ZTT BOX and even tho its been stated that it will feature Andrew Poppy, Propoganda, FGTH and 808 State...here's hoping All Saints, AdamSki and the frames get a look in as well...tho i guess noones bothered about Seal or Lisa Stansfield turning up tbh  ACY110aNjNM All Saints 1.9.7.5 - Silver Shadow wsZ9zT6-E9o Adamski One Of The People
