September 26, 200816 yr Author Celine Dion sets voice for stun in concert at The Q by John Soeder / Plain Dealer Pop Music Critic Thursday September 25, 2008, 2:00 AM Celine Dion, Cleveland, 09.24.08 from John Soeder on Vimeo. REVIEW Celine Dion The Q Sept. 24, 2008 It can smash things to subatomic bits. It can re-create Big Bang conditions that were present at the birth of the universe. Some fear it might even spawn a black hole that could swallow the Earth. But enough about Celine Dion's voice. How about that European supercollider? Scientists have yet to invent a device to rival the awesome vocal powers (sometimes terrifyingly so) of a certain French-Canadian diva, who headlined a concert Wednesday night at The Q. Dion, 40, started in "over the top" mode and worked her way up from there. She announced her arrival with "I Drove All Night," taking the old Cyndi Lauper hit to quasi-operatic heights beyond the wildest dreams of Ms. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." The show fell nearly 10 years to the day from the last Cleveland gig (at the same venue) by Dion, making the rounds on her first tour in a decade. In the interim, she was safely confined to Las Vegas for an extended Caesars Palace engagement. "We're gonna make up for all that lost time," Dion told 14,000-plus concertgoers here. She brought a bit of Vegas with her. The elaborately choreographed production involved a seven-piece band, three backing vocalists, eight dancers and plenty of razzle-dazzle. It looked as if Dion were singing "Alone" (the Heart oldie) inside a giant snow globe, with images of snowflakes falling around her. Despite the fact that she never appeared to break a sweat, the eminently poised Dion went through no fewer than six different outfits. At one point, she donned a massive billowing cape. Perhaps it doubled as a parachute, considering how high some of those notes she nailed were. When Dion leaned way back to belt out "Because You Loved Me," the lights flickered. On Pluto. "The Prayer" was done as a virtual duet with Andrea Bocelli, who appeared via prerecorded video to harmonize sublimely with Dion. More sparks flew during her real-life "I'm Your Angel" duet with backing vocalist Barnev Valsaint. As usual, Dion favored emotionally overwrought ballads, which probably was just as well. Those mighty pipes of hers didn't exactly lend themselves to subtlety. She worked every corner of the audience from a multi-tiered stage in the middle of the arena. Dion paused a couple of times to accept flowers from fans and dispense hugs. In addition to her own hits, past and present, Dion also had a go at favorites by everyone from James Brown ("It's a Man's Man's Man's World") to Cleveland's own Eric Carmen ("All by Myself"). Her rendition of Queen's "We Will Rock You" was a stretch, however. You may very well serenade us. But with all due respect, you're far too polished to rock us, Ms. Dion. Regardless, all was right again with the world by the time she closed with a candlelit version of her "Titanic" tearjerker, "My Heart Will Go On," almost two hours after the concert began. By then, Dion had demonstrated why she remains the most popular woman from up north who isn't running for political office. SET LIST: "I Drove All Night," "The Power of Love," "Taking Chances," "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," "Because You Loved Me," "To Love You More," "Eyes on Me," "All by Myself," "I'm Alive," "Shadow of Love," "Fade Away," "I'm Your Angel" (with Barnev Valsaint), "Alone," "My Love," "The Prayer" (with Andrea Bocelli via prerecorded video), "Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore," "We Will Rock You," "The Show Must Go On," Medley: "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine"/ "Soul Man"/ "Lady Marmalade" / "Respect" / "I Got the Feelin'," "It's a Man's Man's Man's World," "Love Can Move Mountains" ENCORE: "River Deep, Mountain High," "My Heart Will Go On" Source: http://www.cleveland.com/music/index.ssf/2...ce_for_stu.html & VIDEO !!!
