'Sold! To The Nice Rich Man' Pitchfork __

In a blind taste test, if you had told me "Sold! To the Nice Rich Man" was a track from an upcoming Sufjan Stevens album called, say, Minnesota Pop, I wouldn't have doubted you for a second. All the hallmarks are here: the punctuated song title, fussy-bordering-on-precious arrangements, gauzy horns, plunky banjo, Up With People background vocals, even the soft lead vocals. The song, a Danielson Famile cover originally from that band's 1998 album Tri-Danielson!!!, also conveys a similar sense of wonder at the world while conveying an undercurrent of sadness, in this case a disappointment that this wonderful world has been sold to that nice rich man.

Ah, but Stevens' participation on the is limited to production and support. This is the Welcome Wagon's tent show: the Rev. Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique draw from old Presbyterian hymns, blues, folk, and-obviously-well-orchestrated chamber pop to create their own traveling revival. If they seem to get lost in Stevens' joyful noise, the couple do put their stamp on the song. Aiuto, who presides over the Resurrection Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, may sing softly, but he lets his guitar do the preaching. His licks on the chorus sound like good news indeed.
