They could save a fortune by cutting out the expensive wines, and champagne with their 8 course meals. And while I'm ranting they could give the damn corgis winalot instead of prime cuts of beef. <_<

Winalot? Winalot? I say they should down-size to Chappie!

Norma

Cant argue with that...

ORF WIF THEIR 'EADS.....

I guess you'd rather have President Thatcher or President Blair instead!

I love how republicans who hate the monarchy conveniently ignore the net benefit to tourism that the Royal Family bring in, which under a Labour quango (remember Blair is an anti-Royalist) in 2002 was estimated to be a net benefit to the economy of £280 million per annum.

If only all foreigners who come to live in this country could be as profitable.

Quite. Another fundamental point people often miss is that an American-style President would most likely cost the British taxpayer MORE to upkeep than the Royal Family.

Yes but would they be so ugly?

Haha, nice to see the fundamental issues of the debate get tackled.

And you Royalists convieniently ignore the fact that the Palace of Versaille in Paris brings in more tourism revenue than Buckingham Palace, with the added beneftis to the French of NO royal parasites....

If we had a Royal Family which were more like the Dutch or Swedish models, then I would probably have far less of a problem with them....

Mentioning some hypothetical President Thatcher or Blair is totally irrelevant and a typical, lame scaremongering tactic of Royalists such as yourself, neither of them are in power anymore, and at least an ELECTED head of state would have a mandate from the citizens of this country through the ballot box, and not just because of an accident of birth... So, frankly I just do not buy your argument in favour of a Royal Family one bloody iota, not having a Royal Family wouldn't stop tourists coming to visit the Palaces, which could easily be turned into museums or art galleries so that people could actually view all the art and antiquities that we and our ancestors bloody well PAID FOR WHETHER IN TAXES OR IN BLOOD IN THE FIRST SODDING PLACE..... <_<

That's what I've been saying for ages! Well I didn't point out specifically the (beautiful I might add) Palace of Versailles - but Paris and France in general has just as many, if not more tourists than London and GB gets each year but without the expense of a bunch of - lets not beat about the bush here .... Spongers!

I'm of Scots/Irish descent, so my hatred of the British (or rather ENGLISH/GERMAN/GREEK) Royal Family and Aristocracy runs particularly, and historically, deep, a bunch of b/astards, Imperialists and murderers the lot of them... I'm totally with Johnny Lydon/Rotten (similarly of Irish descent) when it comes to the Royals...

I just can't stand them ... I think it comes from my dad ... in fact my whole family ... even my old grandma couldn't stand them! And as far as I know we're not of Irish or Scottish descent. Just hard-working, working-class drongos I suppose! I can partially understand people who are really well off and living a very comfortable life-style having some time for them, but what annoys me is when you see people with not a pot to p/ss in going about our 'lovely queen'. For Marx - religion was the opium of the people. In Britain I think the Royal Family is the opium of the people.

Who said ORF WITH THEIR 'EADS! They were right!

im unconvinced... who says the palace of versaille brings in more money then the royal family do? we simply do not KNOW how much tourism the royal residences would generate without the royals themselves...

Stands to reason they would generate more dunnit... ? Tourists and the general population would have almost complete access to the Palaces and grounds, as they do in France, there would be a hell of a lot more for us to see...

And, I'm sorry, but is the argument "oh, they're good for the tourists" really mean that we as a people should be subjugated by a system which has absolutely NO FUKKIN' RELEVANCE in a modern age...? Feudalism as a system has gone the way of the Dinosaur mate, why should we cling onto these pathetic vestiges of a shameful era... Consign it to history and books, where it belongs.... I am NOT a fukkin' SUBJECT, I am a CITIZEN..... <_< This is the 21st Century mate, not the 16th....

And here's you supposedly a fan of Sex Pistols/John Lydon actually in favour of the bloody Royals....

That was me....

Yeah, you're right, I think even for the general Working Class English, there should be the same level of contempt and disgust... After all, they subjugated YOUR ancestors as lowly English Peasants as well as invading and slaughtering countless peeps in Ireland and Scotland, as for that whole wacky "reformation" thing, good move I must say. Thanks chiefly to that, and "William of Orange", we got the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland...

I mean, Christ, they aint even ENGLISH really are they....? They're just a group of mutts, inbreds and b#astards..... Monarchy as a concept is just poisonous....

, but what annoys me is when you see people with not a pot to p/ss in going about our 'lovely queen'.

And this is exactly why The Sex Pistols released "God Save The Queen" in 1977 - the Silver Jubilee year..... And good on them for doing so, they stirred up sh!t that damn well NEEDED stirring.... I would say that this one act righteous musical rebellion is what led the Modern Day Anti-Monarchist charge.... Unlike the Royals, this great song is STILL relevant in 2008.... It's my own alternative National Anthem....

Do you remember the brilliant BBC Play For Today - The Spongers - the story of a mother of four struggling on benefits - set around the Queen's Jubilee ... wonderful television and I wish they'd repeat it today. At the end - you were left thinking ... who were the real spongers (intentional I'm sure by the writers).
