somewhat iconic duo who was for a time one of americas biggest exports TOO the uk, (at a time when uk acts were invading america). best known for the 60's anthem 'i got you babe'.. it was possibly their weakest track imho. i recall seeing them on totp, the first time i remember seeing 'hippies'..

both solo and together they notched up a credible string of hits , but my favs were the 60's material. 'baby dont go', 'little man','the beat goes on' (refered too often and eminem refered to it in his hit 'lose yourself' i think it was...), 'bang bang' and chers 'gypsies tramps and theives'.

i wasnt too keen on her post surgery...lol.. think she became somewhat a joke.. but courted the pink pound successfully and had a huge hit ten years ago now with 'believe', though the only track i liked by her/them since 'gypsies......' was 'one by one' in 96...

One By One wasn't that from that album done by Cher where she would only sing songs recorded by blokes...(tho i was also reading the article on Robert hazard in the Guide the other day and it said that Cyndi Lauper had it in her contract that she would only sing songs by male autuers such as Jules Shear - of... Whispering Your Name - Alison Moyet fame)...like It's a Man's Man's Man's World (tho pity there wasnt a follow up where she could have done neneh cherry re-imaging woman instead)

Whispering Your Name - Alison Moyet

neneh cherry - woman

and Cher did Walking In Memphis...as performed here in a loving version by the one and only....

:cheer: SCOOTER - I'm Raving I'm Raving :cheer:

Shut Up And Dance feat. Peter Bouncer - Raving, I'm Raving

as well as a 'reading' of The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore...tho why would anyone want any other version than the one by The Walker Brothers i dont know

was wondering if youtube would have the original version of the song on the site - it doesnt but its got theese instead by the 'Poundland Oasis'...

The real people Window pane

The Real People - I Can't Wait

The Real People-Waiting for the World

Nylon "Losing A Friend" (also a The Real People song)

Nylon 'Closer' (also a The Real People song)

as for sonny and cher - there's a dvd box set of the sonny and cher show in the store...which if it gets any cheaper i might get as i think it might be cheesy fun - tho maybe i should watch Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In first

Couldn't stand Sonny & Cher as an act and thought both of them were dreadful singers. But I have been impressed by Cher as an actress ... she has turned in some fabulous performances. Of her songs I can honestly say the only one I like is Believe.

thats so infamous that when something like Pulp's Bad Cover Version video comes out - you can't just help laugh at the cher bit    - this is great!!! one of the funniest ever pop videos ever made

sorry... i cant abide that track.. its just wrong on every level :puke2:

I can't stand Walking In Memphis either ... no matter who sings it. Bloody awful song, in my opinion of course!

Norma

And this was the big one.

Apart from Gypsies Tramps & Thieves I'm struggling to think of a song of her's that I've loved.

I totally agree. She is/was a brilliant actress. I know she won an Oscar for Moonstruck, but to me her best acting performance was in Mask, which strangely or not leads me on to a link with a daughter of a former Blue Peter Presenter (I hope I'm not hurting that singer's (The) Feeling(s)).

Cher - Take Me Home (1979)

Whilst Sonny & Cher were for me (using Tigerboy's Shopping stores analogies) an Aldi to the Waitrose that was......

Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood - Summer Wine (1967)

................................................................

But getting back to Cher... forget parodies of her this performance has to be seen to be believed..... with a legendary British musical icon (in contrast to Cher famous for making great music & awful acting) of coolness who on this is much more David Brent than David Bowie......

David Bowie & Cher - Young Americans melody (1975)

And this was the big one.

tbh i think its one of their weakest tracks ..

I can't believe none of you mentioned "The shoop shoop song"

but seeing as people are now talking about Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood...think we can sidestep that one altogether....yeah Summer Wine is great...tho i havent got the original (got to have a look at the rhino website to see how much the Hazlewood best of is....or hope it turns up in the random £3 or less selection)...but have got the Ville Valo / Natalia Avelon version of Summer Wine...which i think is a good version as well as its very much like the original isnt it....

Ville Valo / Natalia Avelon version

and back talking about Nancy Sinatra...i think - as much as a fan of pulp as i am - have to say Nancy Sinatra's reading of Don't Let Him Waste Your Time has to be viewed as the definitive version...as it is much much better!!! lets just hope that Jessica Simpson just stays well away from that one

Nancy Sinatra - Don't Let Him Waste Your Time

Jarvis - Dont Let Him Waste Your Time

bonus video time - that might come into the conversation at this point:

Sandie Shaw - Please help the cause against lonliness

Sandie Shaw - Hand In Glove

heard you the first time :)

tbh i think its one of their weakest tracks ..

Sorry for the double post but my internet connection dropped after clicking Add Reply button.

Of Cher's solo hits this was her third biggest UK hit and her second single. It peaked at #3

Some poeple think Nancy Sinatra's version was the original - it wasn't - Cher's was.

Cher - Bang Bang

Sonny also had two solo singles but this was his only UK hit at #9

Sonny - Laugh At Me -- video from former German music show Beat Club

His other solo single was called The Revolution Kind - although on this video it states Sonny & Cher - On the single it was listed as being by Sonny

Radio 1 DJ's have good knowledge of popular music, thats a laugh.

Radio 1 lost that when the likes of Paul Gambaccini, Peter Powell, Nicky Campbell & Mark Goodyer left the station & "Saint" John Peel died.

I remember a year or two ago when Radio 1 DJ's took on Radio 2 DJ's on Ken Bruce's Pop Master Music Quiz during a week & Radio 2 stuffed Radio 1 5-0.

Only Zane Lowe on Radio 1 seems to possess a decent authority of music knowledge these days.

The R1 DJs did exactly the same thing when Stereophonics released Handbags & Gladrags.

The always said that the original was by Rod Stewart which was wrong. Rod Stewart's version was a 1972 album track. The original was a #33 hit for Chris Farlowe in late 1967.

It was also written my Mike D'abo who was at the time lead singer of Manfred Mann.

that INFURIATED me also.... because i LOVE chris farlowes version.. i got it brand new for 20p in an electrical shop (that was selling off hundereds of old unplayed, unbought, singles) in '72. (i got loads from there, spending every penny i could muster).

farlowe sang with soul, stewart by comparison was a karaoke singer. .... the line 'poor old grandads hads to sweat' was stewart trying too much to emphisise the hardship too much through lyrics... farlowe just sang 'grandads had to sweat', using his voice to convey the pain.... brilliant.
