US superstar Pink’s new single So What, the first from new album Funhouse, has soared from No.38 to No.1 this week denying Mancunian band Oasis from scoring their usual lead single No.1 with Shock Of The Lightning, which debuts at No.3. Irish boy band Boyzone also return to the top five with Love You Anyway, their first single since 1999.

Alecia Moore, better known as Pink, released her first UK single, There You Go, right back at the start of the decade in 2000. In her illustrious chart career, Pink, has had a huge amount of success worldwide. To date in the UK, she had featured on two UK No.1 singles. She was part of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack in 2001, Lady Marmalade also featured Christina Aguilera, Mya and Lil’ Kim and topped the charts just over seven years ago. A year later in 2002, Pink topped off an incredible year with her first solo No.1 single, Just Like A Pill. She also had hits with Get The Party Started, Don’t Let Me Get Me and Family Portrait in 2002, all from her multi million selling second album Missundaztood. After a trouble era with third album Try This, which spawned few hit singles, she returned in 2006 with another million selling album, I’m Not Dead, the pop/rock sound paving the way nicely for her new album Funhouse, due out at the end of the month. The tongue in cheek first single So What, about her recent split with her husband, soars from No.38 to No.1, the biggest officially recognised climb to No.1 recorded. This eclipses the 35-1 jump set by Sugababes a year ago with About You Now. Although other songs have climbed from outside the top forty to the top, this was always because of leaked sales or import sales. Pink would have of course arguably entered much higher last week had the download not been held back until Friday, giving her less than two days to rack up sales for Sunday’s chart.

With Pink storming to the top of the chart, Kings Of Leon are forced down a place to No.2 with their former No.1 single Sex On Fire. It spent three weeks at No.1, the first single to do so since Leon Jackson’s Christmas chart topper When You Believe. Oasis have been one of the defining bands of the last twenty years in Britain, quite possibly one of the biggest icons of the ‘Cool Britannia’ period in the 1990s. The group, fronted by outspoken lead singer Liam Gallagher and his older brother Noel, had huge hits with classic songs such as Wonderwall, Whatever and Don’t Look Back In Anger, and have always had massive selling albums. Many people feel that their noughties output has been far below their 1990s standard, and now for the first time this decade, the lead single from their new album Dig Out Your Soul has failed to follow Go Let It Out, The Hindu Times and Lyla to No.1. The Shock Of The Lightning has had a simultaneous physical and digital release this week, and whilst physical sales were strong, digital sales have been less good than expected and the song has ended up behind Pink and Kings Of Leon, and debuts at No.3. In 2005, they managed a second No.1 from their last album Don’t Believe The Truth. The Importance Of Being Idle was seen as a far stronger track than Lyla, so it will be interesting to see if the second single from Dig Out Your Soul will have a bigger impact than this one. Nevertheless, the new album by Oasis is out on Monday and should easily top next week’s chart.

Sugababes jump four places to No.4 with Girls, the first single to be taken from new album Catfights And Spotlights. It is their first top five hit in the UK for a year when About You Now topped the chart for four weeks. Follow up singles Change and Denial both failed to reach the top ten. The single is released physically on Monday and is expected to challenge for a top three position in seven days time. Making a triumphant return to the top five this week, with their seventeenth consecutive top five single, is Irish band Boyzone with new single Love You Anyway. Boyzone, consisting of Ronan Keating, Stephen Gately, Mikey Graham, Keith Duffy and Shane Lynch were huge teen idols in the 1990s and announced that they were reforming last year. They have already had a huge sell out tour this year and have just announced another tour for next year. Boyzone’s last single Every Day I Love You peaked at No.3 in 1999 and they have never had a single peak outside the top five to date. They are perhaps best remembered for the million selling 1998 No.1 hit No Matter What, their other huge hits including Father & Son, Love Me For A Reason, Picture Of You and Baby Can I Hold You. Their second greatest hits collection, Back Again…No Matter What, is due out on October 13th, and it will be interesting to see how well it performs in the run up to Christmas considering that their last hits collection, By Request, released in 1999, spent a total of nine weeks at No.1 in the UK. Love You Anyway is an uptempo pop track in the 1960’s inspired brass sound mould that is popular at the moment; it debuts at No.5 after a simultaneous physical and digital release. The top five has an oddly old school feel to it with two nineties acts; Oasis and Boyzone, along with three of this decades most established acts; Sugababes, Pink and Kings Of Leon. It is very unusual to see a top five not featuring at least one new artist these days.

Rihanna’s Disturbia continues its top ten yo-yo, sliding back three places to No.6 this week, overtaking Katy Perry though. US singer Katy’s former five week chart topper slides five places to No.7 after three consecutive weeks at No.2. It has been inside the top ten for ten weeks now selling well over 300,000 copies so far. US girl group Pussycat Dolls slide four places to No.8 with comeback single When I Grow Up followed by two further four place sliders; Iglu & Hartly’s In This City is down to No.9 and fellow American band Gym Class Heroes are down to No.10 with Cookie Jar. American’s slightly less dominate the top ten this week but nevertheless claim six of ten available spots. Barbadian Rihanna claims one spot whilst there are just two British acts again and one Irish act.

Outside the top ten is devoid of much action this week with much of the big news happening at the top end of the chart. Swedish DJ Basshunter scores his third top twenty hit with Angel In The Night. Basshunter has already had a No.1 single and album this year, both titled Now You’re Gone, and a No.2 single All I Ever Wanted. Angel In The Night is the third single from the DJ and it climbs seven places to No.14 after its physical release, still looking unlikely to ever give him a third top ten hit though. The next new entry to the chart is from garage trio Platnum. The second Mancunian entrants of the week, Platnum are a mixed vocal trio consisting of Aaron Evers, Michelle McKenna and Mina Poli. Along with garage producers H ‘Two’ O, the trio scored a huge No.2 single, What’s It Gonna Be, earlier in the year. Their second single is called Love Shy (Thinking About You) and debuts at No.20 on download sales, and is looking certain to move upwards next week when the physical formats are released. The single is a cover of Danish singer Kristine Blond’s 1998 hit. It reached No.22 upon its original release and No.28 when re-released in the garage boom of 2000. Platnum’s version has therefore already exceeded the success of the original.

A couple of re-entries rejoin the lower end of the singles chart for various reasons this week. Keane’s download only release Spiralling finally has an official music video and the effect of this is a re-entry to the chart for the single moving back from No.54 to No.36 this week. Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi’s Sweet About Me refuses to die, the former No.6 hit and chart staple of 2008 goes back in at No.38 this week. There is a new entry at No.37 this week for UK hip hop group N-Dubz. Another young mixed trio, the band consists of members Dappy, Tulisa and Fazer. They have received heavy support from channels U and Fizz over the past few years, and score their second top forty hit this week with Ouch. Their first hit was last year’s re-release of their 2006 debut single You Better Not Waste My Time, which peaked at No.26 on its second release. Ouch has been around for quite a few months now and finally makes its chart debut this week at No.37. The final new entry, going in at No.39, is Kids, the third single from American indie electronic duo MGMT. The duo have had an incredibly successful year with their album Oracular Spectacular and singles Time To Pretend and Electric Feel. Kids is generally considered by fans to be one of the albums stronger tracks and it finds its way into the chart on downloads alone with the physical release scheduled for October 13th.

The album chart has a lot of action this week but none of it can stop Kings Of Leon. Only By The Night eases to a second week at No.1 after a huge opening week of well over 200,000 sales. 2002 Pop Idol winner Will Young instantly moved away from the pop sound of his winning single Evergreen to become a respected British soul singer. His fourth album, Let It Go, is also his fourth top two album, debuting at No.2 this week. Fellow British soul singer James Morrison topped the chart in 2006 with debut album Undiscovered. The follow up, Songs For You, Truths For Me, goes in at No.3 this week. Young opera singer and schoolboy Andrew Johnston made a name for himself on this year’s edition of Britain’s Got Talent, wowing the judges and public with his impressive voice. His debut album One Voice goes in at No.4 this week pushing Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad down three places to No.5, the former chart topper still selling incredibly well after a year and a half. Ne-Yo’s Year Of The Gentleman eases down a place to No.6 and Duffy’s Rockferry is down four places to No.7 on its thirty-first week inside the top ten. Bette Midler’s The Best Bette is down two places to No.8 whilst Seasick Steve, an American blues singer, goes in at No.9 with I Started Out With Nothin And I Still Got Most Of It Left. Doll Domination by Pussycat Dolls rounds up the top ten, sliding six places to No.10.

Next week’s chart should see Pink easily hold onto the top spot with So What although a couple of big singles will be hoping to keep her run at the top to just a week. Sugababes’ Girls, the lead single from their new album, is out physically and should challenge for a top three placing, whilst British rock group Kaiser Chiefs with new single Never Miss A Beat, the first single from their new album Off With Their Heads. The Kaiser’s last lead single, last year’s Ruby, was a No.1 success. Oasis and Boyzone might slip a bit after their initial physical success but Rihanna and Kings Of Leon should stay at the top end of the chart with other climbers looking to come from N-Dubz and Platnum, both physically released on Monday. Other acts releasing singles that could make a physical impact next week include The Courteeners, Foals, John Legend feat Andre 3000 and Tilly & The Wall. There should be a few high download entries. After an eight year chart hiatus, German DJ Sash! digitally releases Raindrops (Encore Une Fois) on Monday. It is a vocal reworking of his 1996 debut UK single and this version should at the very least return him to the UK top ten. Snow Patrol should make a chart return next week with Take Back The City, the first single from their new album A Hundred Million Suns, it is already available to download. Kings Of Leon will undoubtedly have to surrender their No.1 spot to Oasis who return on Monday with Dig Out Your Soul. Other albums that should make some sort of chart impact next week include new releases from You Me At Six, Bob Dylan, Chicane and Sarah McLachlan.

Great read, as always, Good Delta. Don't know if this has been said on Buzzjack but Pink also records the biggest climb within The Top 40. Previous record holder was Embrace's official World Cup Song, World at your feet (2006).It jumped 38-3. Before that it was Shakin' Stevens 'You drive me crazy' which moved 39-5 (1981). I remember this chart fact from Music Week in 2006. I used Polyhex to check Shakin' Stevens single.
You think Sash will be top 10? Hopefully you're right and you normally are :cheer: :P
Interestingly the Kings Of Leon album is now the 5th consecutive No1 album to spend a fortnight at the top following ABBA, The Script, The Verve and Metallica… At one stage it was looking like the albums 2008 was going to be like the singles 2000.

I don't doubt that for a second:
